Daniel Agger suffered a suspected broken rib during the Carling Cup final, Kenny Dalglish confirmed in his post-match press conference.

The Danish international, who had to be replaced by Jamie Carragher, during the dramatic victory over Cardiff City, will have the injury assessed when he returns to Melwood.

Dalglish told reporters: "I think Daniel has broken his rib."

Through all the celebrations, this could be an important repercussion.

Even if the rib is "only" bruised he is supposed to rest for 30-40 days. I have that injury atm and that's what the doctors told me (then again I'm in judo/combat sambo so the sport may be a factor). If the rib is broken, I guess Agger will be out for about two months.

It would be a shame if he was out for a few weeks as him and skirts looked rock solid together but skirts is playing out of his skin so i think whoever comes in alongside him will do ok.

Normally i'd be worried about that but he's been so good I'm hoping he will adapt for however long danny's out.Personally i'd keep him where he is and give coates a go.

Cool colour me a little more worried than most. If honest I will be fairly devastated if he is out for a couple of months. This competition certainly will have come at a huge price if that is the case when you couple it with the Lucas injury in the earlier round.

As much as I'd like to see Carragher play, I think it's time we start to play Coates to take the place of Agger. We shouldn't rush him back as it's only going to affect us in the future. Let him get 100% healed before he plays again. We have adequate cover.

Gutted for Agger.

I don't want Carragher or Coates to come in and replace him, I'd like to see them both given some game time, rotated.

Arsenal next week, you'd want Carra's experience and his ability, but is he fast enough to deal with the likes of Walcott and RVP?
Stoke a couple of weeks later, Coates height or Carra's experience and ability?

a real big blow. good backup with coates/carra/kelly....just don't think carra should be a lock every week now though...he gets turned too easily and lacks pace...coates makes the odd mistake but is solid...kelly is a beast and maybe kenny should think about unleashing him

This will definitely be an interesting call from Kenny given his treatment of other more talented players like Maxi and Aurelio who aren't "of the future". Ruthless or sentimental? The Copa America-winning Coates or Carragher? I fear the latter but hope I'm wrong.

Thing is, it's not saying Carragher won't do a job for us, it's just that he'll do it 15 yards deeper, and that's not something we can afford in the fight for 4th and a potential trip to Wembley again.

Yeah Enrique and Henderson have been favoured ahead of the likes of Aurelio and Maxi as both aren't the future, which I understand and hopefully Coates will be selected ahead of Carragher if Agger's unavailable. Got a feeling Carragher will start.

I just read this (don't know whether it's true though as I'm no medic).

The usual recovery time for this sort of injury is 3-6 weeks, although that very much depends on the extent of the damage.

So I suppose it depends on the damage made. Hope he gets well soon!

I would love to hear an explanation for why when Carra comes on instead of slotting into Aggers berth on the left hand side of the centre back pairing we reshuffle the defence to suit Carra.

It's bizarre why reshuffle when Carra has played extensively at leftback and Enrique is the better defensive full back better suited to covering Carras lack of pace.
