Champions league opponents watch - FC. Porto
« on: January 18, 2018, 02:00:37 pm »
I was searching for a decent thread for the pre-game of Porto, and couldn't find one. Mods please merge or keep it alive based on your expert opinion.

I think we need to be careful about Porto here. I have heard ex-players, journos and pundits mentioning Liverpool could go a long way if they get a favourable draw after Porto. So, I decided to watch Porto a bit, and to be fair they are if not scary, considerable opponents at the least. They have a striker(Aboubakar) who is good enough to play for a top 4 club in England. They have full backs who are very good and can cause problems if given a chance. They have a manager who looks to be quite good. They have Hector Herrera anyone remember him from the World Cup? He has hit a bit of form.

The other attackers - Brahimi and Moussa Marega looked really good to me in the champions league match replays I saw.  I think we are in danger of getting  ahead of ourselves and underestimate these opponents. I know Klopp won't allow it, but make no mistake the away tie to their stadium is a tough one. Bayern Munich(with Pep at the helm) and Chelsea have tasted defeat there in recent years.

Another point to note, is that they have scored a freakish amount of goals from headers/setpieces/corners, they have really tall guys. We need to be on our guard and take this tie seriously. Especially the away tie, we need to be at our defensive best, because they have the tools to score 2-3 goals in their stadium.

I think, we need to be psychologically ready for these, because if we treat this tie with the proper respect, we have it in us to win this tie.

Hopefully we can track them in this thread, as we gear up to this clash.

Think you're right... as of today Porto sits second in the Portuguese Premeira Liga one point behind Sporting

17 games played,
14 wins
3 draws
0 Losses
+36 Goal Differential.

Not to be taken lightly at all...

There are no easy opponents in the CL knockout stages.

The Europa Final is a lesson not easily forgotten

I looked up a little on stats of that striker Vincent Aboubakar who has scored 5 in 5 games in the CL this season.
His overall goal tally in continental games is very impressive 17 goals in 26 games,we need to be careful dealing with him too.

All else said, I  fancy us against a football playing side.

Do they play football, sophisticated hoofball, or high quality counter attack?

They can mix both. They have Brahimi, and Marega who can be very tricky. But they also have lots of aerial power. Aboubakar is a beast, will need Van Dijk to sit on him. Plus they seem to have enough steel in midfield to blunt good sides. Have they faced an attack as good as ours, I would say no, probably not. But, complacency can and will kill us, I am talking to you Joe Gomez.

So nice to be able to see that sentence 'going to need van Dijk to...' - he's so tall

I was thinking perhaps Lovren can stick on him? Didn't Lovren do a great job against Lukaku? I could be wrong but Aboubakar sounds like the Lukaku mold?
