If they're rats, get someone out or use these:

https://www.raygrahams.com/products/4855-rentokil-mouse-rat-killer-pasta-bait.aspx?pv=3662&gclid=eaiaiqobchmipk_insgk1giv6b_tch0trabveaqybsabeglbn_d_bwe

We had a nest under the floorboards under the stairs, and we put these about the house.  They took a few to the nest and were wiped out.  It took a while for them to start eating/taking them though, as we only put a few out at first.  It only worked when we put the whole lot out and tried different places.

You'll be able to tell by the size of their droppings too.  Mouse droppings are tiny; a mm or two.

Wrong shaped face for a rat; It's an adult mouse.

Further to the shouts for poison, poisoned mice will not die in the cavity wall, or under the floorboards and stink the house out. Yes, they will die, and quite likely to be in those areas, but dead meeses desiccate, not rot, so there is no smell attained for your victorious rebuffal of the invading hordes.
Dead rats, however, DO rot, and DO stink and will ensure a further invasion of bluebottles and other winged pests. So they always have a little dying "up yours" to impart. The bastards.

That's a baby rat Hass.

And mice don't squeal, at least not audibly from range.

You really need to get the situation sorted, and pronto, they will do a lot of damage.

Now that I see it on my laptop, rather than my phone, I agree that it's a rat unfortunately   :(

so the poison seems to have done the trick.

last sunday one of them made a break from the under the fridge then croaked in the middle of the kitchen floor.

we have a low stench under the radiator in the living room but not a single sighting since then.

will post the body of the final fella once i get it off my phone.

so many potential points of entry due to back doors being open in the summer.

annoyingly i've just heard some little twats squeaking behind the cupboards again.

bah.

anywhere here's the one that we found in the middle of the kitchen floor last sunday.

looks like he died making a final break from under the fridge.

Is that not a rat again?

not that big.

still warm when i got to it.

we'd had breakfast and went to the shops.

came back to find him dead on the floor.

odd silence for ten days after a summer of squeaking.

thought he was the last but the little fuckers are back.

we're going to have to get that cat.

Probably bollocks and I'm not sure how they do as pets with small kids, but I've been told that ferrets will kill and keep away rats/mice.

Do you live in a terrace?  Nests can live under the whole block.  You may need to look at sealing their entry points if the problem is with the area.

Thing with rats is, they are constantly peeing as they move, so they leave a lovely scent for other rats to follow. Once you have had a rat in the house, you HAVE to find where it got in a get this sealed off, otherwise once you have offed Roland, cousin Vinny just smells his way in the same way. In mine, the last occupant of the house had helpfully bodge-DIY'ed a downpipe into the drain system when putting on the conservatory, then just built decking over this. Ratty access paradise. Suffice to say, I have concreted the shit out of this, better than Fukishima, and no more rats.

We had a problem with rats in our old house.
So I went to our local diy store to get some poison. I asked the fella behind the counter what was the best stuff to use. He said there was a new product out that is a paste.
I asked him how to use it and he said "Squeeze some paste onto the tips of your fingers and smear around the rats hole."
"Fkin 'ell mate" I said back "If I can get that close I'll twat the fucker with a brick!"
