I grew up in a Lancashire town where the “young farmers” went every year for a piss up. Christ they were big bastards and as strong as an ox. The local police and bouncers never bothered them, let them sort their own issues out 😂

Great bunch of lads that just drank like fish all weekend
I wasn't a farmer but if I wanted to socialise with people my age, I had to go to these. Major piss ups, some of these farmers could drink unbelievable amounts even as teenagers and as you say, some seriously powerful units.

It was a lot more frequent than a year though. Again, I stood out like a sore thumb by not wearing the farmer's uniform of plum chinos, check shirt, schoffel and boat shoes. My slight scouse accent used to stand out too, they all had this homogenised 'village' voice.

Ridiculous, given in the show itself he professes how worried he is and given his age, past as a smoker and underlying health conditions, he'd be fucked if he caught it.

Timely reminder of how selectively picking quotes can totally change the meaning of them.

What he actually said was…..
Quote

I get the reason people dislike clarkson, but what he has said is in no way what he’s been accused of saying.
“Happiness can be found in the darkest of times, if one only remembers to turn on the light.”
“Generosity always pays off. Generosity in your effort, in your work, in your kindness, in the way you look after people and take care of people. In the long run, if you are generous with a heart, and with humanity, it always pays off.”

They’re right, country file is the most sterile programme you’ll ever see.

Not sure quite what you're expecting in a series about a clueless bloke knowing nothing about farming and how he reacts to it

He actually seems to 'get' a few things during the course of the programme which is very un-Clarksmanlike

I just think it's way too obviously scripted in parts. Like he unloads one single bag of grain from a massive truck and says, "Right, all done. Thanks very much!" and then is confronted with about fifty more. It's sitcom-esque in it's setting up. All these shows are staged for comedic effect, but it just happens to be very transparent in this one.

However...

Well it's clearly scripted - I'd be surprised - amazed even if it weren't

But there seemed to some genuine feeling and a change in his demeanor with a couple of tearful events through the series and it was really interesting into how farms work, what farmers do and how they have to try and make money against the odds.

He seemed to be confused that he couldn't just throw a load of money at it and make a fortune but I agree that by the end of it his whole attitude and demeanor had changed to more empathetic than bullish arrogance.

That's got to be a rarity for him.

From a subsidies perspective it will be interesting to see the spreadsheet stuff next season - they made out that season one made no money (the farm itself not the show) but it did leave out the massive EU subsidy they would’ve automatically been granted that would have made the farm about £200k profit all things told. That’s with Clarkson having wasted a load of money on stupid schemes and of course the fact that Amazon will swallow any losses in aid of making money on the TV Show.

That subsidy is over now so unless Amazon are willing for the farm to run at several hundred thousand loss (which they likely are after the popularity of the content) then there will probably be more experienced hands in the background actually ensuring some of the farm is profitable. I do likely think that it’s position as a testing bed for entertaining schemes and the content it produces for the show is really all Amazon will care about though.

They did a good job showing the importance of English farming so maybe next season will shed light on the challenges farmer’s face without EU-driven money. What I will say is that I’ve never known a farmer that wasn’t romping round in a new Defender, Discovery or Range Rover when in their own time.

Binged the whole thing in more or less one go: the exposure it gives to farming, their struggles and how tough it is, the sheer weight of politics involved and the red tape obsessed petty councils of the UK make it a very important show.

Although being from a rural Welsh farming community, I can't even begin to describe how different posh English farmers are to north Walian ones! ;D

Clarkson is a bit of a paradox. He's an excellent writer, presenter and storyteller. Some of his documentaries, especially on the Victoria Cross and the St Nazaire Raid, are absolutely gripping. But he's also a Grade A cnut of a man and strikes me as very difficult to like.

Hopefully will finish this tonight.

Yep, Clarkson is like a professional troll, then his documentaries & stuff like this are gripping.

Seems like Amazon are dropping Clarkson when the Amazon contract is up next year, wouldn't be surprised if they called it a day for the grand tour, Hammond & May still have their own shows, as does Clarkson.

I'm not a Royalist in any sense of the word, but I always thought Clarkson was a complete and utter fucking prick.

I watched the first series kind of by accident, but after the first episode was really into it. He even turned his imagine around with Millionaire.

But this latest shite from that fucking rag has made me not want to bother watching the new series. Probably won't ever.

Not sure if that makes me a snowflake or not, but he's a complete gobshite.

I do wonder if it's because Clarkson is involved, the local council are taking a hard line out of spite, as some of the planning refusals [like the farm track] are really petty?

Yes, season 3 is already being filmed
Excellent!

I do wonder if it's because Clarkson is involved, the local council are taking a hard line out of spite, as some of the planning refusals [like the farm track] are really petty?
It really is petty. Nothing to do with the farm itself but the individual himself imo. That little restaurant that's been closed as well.

The opposing solicitor apparently said half the farm will be a car park? It's just stuff being made up to suit themselves.

I did read somewhere that someone set up a crowdfunder for the poor lady who lost half her cows and delivered the milk to the shop. I believe she got something like thirty grand.

Another lady was watching it and just decided to do it.  :)
