brian eno is a celebrated musician, composer, and record producer who is best known for coining the term ‘ambient music’. a self-described ‘non-musician’, he has been named as one of the most influential and innovative figures of contemporary music, contributing to the industry with his unique conceptual approaches and recording techniques.

but eno is also a celebrated visual artist, exhibiting multiple works all around the globe since the 1970s. drawing inspiration from james turrell’s works, mondrian, suprematism, and early-20th-century russian avant-gard, his extensive oeuvre continuously explores the potential of light. for his latest venture, the british creative has collaborated with london’s paul stolper gallery, to develop a limited run of psychedelic, color-changing LED turntables.

A FREE FLOW OF MUSIC AND LED COLOR COMBINATIONS

the turntable has lighting mechanisms integrated into both its base and platter, leading to a free flow of unique LED color combinations as the music plays.‘the light from it was tangible as if caught in a cloud of vapor,’ eno explained upon first seeing the finished product. ‘we sat watching for ages, transfixed by this totally new experience of light as a physical presence.’

released in a limited edition run of 50 units, the turntable takes shape as a psychedelic combination of sound and vision. each piece comes signed by the legendary record producer himself, along with its batch number engraved on the back. the units are available for purchase through enquiries on the paul stopler gallery website (find more here).

The RSD list has dropped.

Was hoping for another T Swift drop but nothing this year (it is the day after her new album drops).

Couple of interesting bits - probably won’t be queuing at 6am like previous RSDs but will definitely pop in and see what’s left.

Heart As Big As Liverpool is a nice piece.

Nice one!

I have a 6-hour Dave/De La Soul tribute mix a mate passed to me, it's brilliant.

Shoot me a PM if you want it, I tried to send you a message, no joy.

ILLMATIC 30TH ANNIVERSARY (7" BOX SET)

GET ON DOWN EXCLUSIVE

Illmatic 30th Anniversary Box Set Includes:

-The full album plus 2 remixes on six big-hole 7-inches pressed on black vinyl.

-The 7-inches are housed in a custom hardbound casebook that includes a 64-page book of extended liner notes by Sacha Jenkins with full lyrics, photos, and 12-inch singles discography.

-The casebook is housed in a premium outer slipcase, featuring the iconic album art printed in gold.

Thirty years ago on April 19, 1994, Nasir "Nas" Jones dropped Illmatic which is regarded by many as the greatest hip-hop album of all time. Before 1994, Nas (under the name "Nasty Nas") was rapping and making demo tapes with Large Professor, and in 1991 performed an unforgettable verse on Main Source's "Live at the Barbeque."  The next year Nas released "Halftime" for the Zebrahead soundtrack, another Large Pro cut, and signed a deal to record an album for Columbia Records.  Nas was being compared to one of the lyrical greats, Rakim, and the pressure was on to drop a debut album to top all rappers.  A dream team of hip-hop producers including DJ Premier, Large Professor, Q-Tip, Pete Rock, and L.E.S. was assembled to work on what would become the 5 Mic classic Illmatic. Not only did it establish Nas as the Best Rapper Alive in 1994, but it also raised the stakes for hip-hop production, lyrical technique, content, and overall artistic ambition.

Illmatic is the crown jewel of the mid-90s classics that still define the genre. No filler, one intro, and 9 tracks of hip-hop perfection. Every song on this album matters. From Premier's masterful "N.Y State Of Mind" to the AZ-assisted "Life's A Bitch" and Pete Rock's piano-laced "The World Is Yours" Illmatic starts with a powerful trio of songs that easily could solidify this album as classic if it stopped right there. Other tracks such as "Memory Lane" and "One Love" show Nas focusing on his neighborhood and local legends that molded him into the person he was which made them all just as important to us. Large Professor delivers the album's first single "It Ain't Hard To Tell" while Premier delivers the album's certified street anthem "Represent". Serious to a fault, and lyrically dense to an extent that has possibly never been matched, the 20-year-old Nas stood on the shoulders of his predecessors and made them proud with this one.  Thirty years later the album stands the test of time, where time is truly illmatic.

To commemorate the 30th anniversary of the release of Illmatic, Get On Down in partnership with Sony's CERTIFIED is proud to present the entire album on six 7-inches with 2 remixes. The box sets are in stock and shipping now!

Can you be arsed to get up and change the record a million times just to listen to an album though? I can't be bothered...gets on my wick when artists artifically expand a single album to 2LP...this trend is not for a lazy boy like me...

I’m a dj. So I’m usually mixing them, or cutting them in. I don’t play albums fully. These are collectors pieces for me. I’ve got all the original singles and albums. I buy these as display pieces etc

I’ve never been one to play albums all the way through. Couldn’t be arsed. It’s boring as fuck

i was giving that a bit of thought lately. prefabs sprout jordan the comeback came up second hand recently but i didnt get it because it was close to a 70 minute album? incredibly long for a single 12 inch vinyl. think ive seen it released as a double lately, which if you want it to sound its best its to be a double. tiny grooves mean that  the needle cant get deep into the groove. anyway dont mind me lads, im only summising.
