Everton v Liverpool: 227th Merseyside Derby Monday 8PM
« on: December 16, 2016, 01:36:56 pm »
So the talk has started in our workplace, the bluenoses are really up for this one it seems after beating Arsenal 'they're back!' as one Evertonian has said to me.

This game has the potential to go either way and the result also dictates who i'll be sat around the Christmas dinner table with.

In the meantime I have looked back on some of my favourite derby results here:

http://intothemreds.com/at-the-back/down-memory-lane-derby-day-classics

Always great to beat Everton, Monday will be no different. 3 Points please lads

The Arsenal game wasn't the norm for Everton this season, so I wouldn't use that as a barometer of if they've suddenly hit form. Plus, against Arsenal they only came into the game when they went at them.

I think if they do the same against us it will play into our hands. Be interested if Klopp goes with Firmino up top and Origi wide, as it worked well against 'boro in the 2nd half. Pretty confident for Monday anyway, especially if Can and Sturridge can make the bench (and Matip back in the starting XI too)

This will be an almighty fight for the second balls just like in good old days. They have moved away from Martinez style completely and practically became a long-ball team. No Matip will be a massive blow but if Henderson does a good job dealing with Lukaku when they kick it long to him to chest it down we'll have this game under control and then it will be all about what we do with the ball.

We're the 2nd most dominant team in this league possession wise, it's a big pitch there so in theory we should be able to move the ball around the way we know we can. I'll be shocked if they keep a clean sheet against us but on the other hand they are unbeaten at home and got good results against Arsenal, Spurs and Utd. A win would be a massive statement of intent and a huge boost to our title credentials.

from what Kloppo said in the press-conference, it doesn't sound like Matip will be ready.

I expect the same starting 11 from wednesday.

A small chance Studge is on the bench, but he's not back in team training yet, so it must be a pretty small chance!

This tends to be more difficult at Woodison than it is at Anfield. Our last win there was 5 years ago, when Kenny was manager, we won 2-0, carroll and luis I believe scored the goals.

Matip will be a huge miss, Lukaku has scored against us at their place in the last 3 meetings there. Sonce 2011, all 4 matches have been draws.

Were due a win there

Where are people getting Studge returning from? Thought he was out for a while.

Kloppo said in the press conference there may be a chance he's in the squad.

But it doesn't seem it's a big chance, cos he's not back in team traning yet - but the boss said they'd see today how he is.

IF he's back, goes without saying it'd be for the bench, not for the start.

Worth remembering they're still unbeaten at home. Personally why I felt so gutted about the West Ham draw as I think this game has a draw written all over it as well as many derbies have been over the years.

Think it is the worst time to play them personally.

They have been feeling really down as a club though the games prior to the Arsenal one.  Many of their fans were far from impressed with Koeman, especially not picking the right team and tactics.

But that result seems to have given them a lift and sadly Koeman seemed to realise that Valencia is someone that should be starting and gets the best out of Lukaku as he gives he support and more space.  Lukaku has been isolated this season when Valencia hasn't been on the pitch and his work rate and holding up of the ball has gone to pot.   Valencia will chase lost causes, he'll press, he'll support Lukaku on the ball and they look much better with him in the side, whether that is with him wide looking to cut in or directly upfront with Lukaku.

The good news however is we played our best football, in that second half vs Boro for weeks.  Maybe we have also turned a bit of a corner and we'll start going back to our best and if that's the case, then it shouldn't matter which Everton turn up as we are better than them.

Form has no bearing on a derby match, players on both sides are going to give it their all no matter what. Everton tactics will no doubt be to get in our faces and stop our free flowing football sort of like they did against Arsenal from the second half onwards. Yes they won that game but they rode their luck especially towards the end. As far as we're concerned I hope we press them high and keep that tempo to our game, tough place to go and win but we've been to tougher grounds and won so it can be done.

Be good if they play with a extra man up the top, makes more space for our forwards when we hit them on the break. If they hadn't beaten Arsenal they would have played a 9-0-1 formation.  ;D

Form has no bearing on a derby match.

Don't really agree with that.  Last season for example when they came to Anfield they were so down on Martinez, low on confidence and we bummed them.

I think teams can raise their games in them.  But it certainly helps if the fans are not totally buying into what the managers is doing.  I think Koeman has stumbled on his best team, that's why I feel it's not the best time to play them.

Their form is pretty awful over the last ten games.

Wonder why this change of heart by the appointments team?

Wirral-born referee Mike Dean is to take charge of his first ever Liverpool match in the Premier League in Monday's Merseyside derby at Everton.

Dean, who reportedly supports local club Tranmere Rovers, has also not taken charge of an Everton game since January 2006, when he sent off Everton striker Duncan Ferguson and Wigan forward Jason Roberts in a 1-1 draw. His only other Everton assignment was the club's 3-2 loss at Manchester United on Boxing Day 2003.

The only time Dean has officiated a Liverpool game was the Reds' 2-1 League Cup semifinal first-leg defeat at Sheffield United in January 2003.

Dean was supposed to referee the 2006 FAC Final but was removed and Alan Wylie took charge as Liverpool were in the final.

I heard an interview with Howard Webb last week who was asked why Dean gives penalties for holding and grappling in the penalty area at set pieces. Hardly any other referee does.

He said it wasn't ideal to have inconsistency but Mike has never been afraid to give decisions if he thinks it warrants it. He has done this with other aspects of the laws of the game ever since he started out.

I would expect both defences to be aware of this in preparation for the match?

We are definitely believers and we’ve won the fucking lot!

Think they'll come out of the blocks, press, kick the shit out of us and look to sneak a shit one from Lukaku and sit on it.

I feel more comfortable with them having some delusional thoughts they will win this as they've turned a corner.

Wont be easy but I fail to see how they'll cope with the movement we create.

Better as a separate post this.  ;D

Everton's squad is ageing, most of their players lack pace.  But their (red!) blood will be up, and I'm expecting rash, late tackles from them.

The form book might go out the window, but in Liverpool's case the form books says we've failed to score in only three games all season, and only one game have we scored just one goal.

Shanks once said football is a simple game.  They have to stop us from scoring.  If they want to win they have to score fast and early and then try to keep us out.

Unless we play like old women or idiots, the formidable challenge will be all Everton's.
