I'm surprised how many people on the first page rated him. Bar a few high profile goals he scored,  I always thought he was bang average.

The only reason he is remembered is because of the winners against the Mancs. Average player in every way

He got lucky that his face fit with Houllier (and Redknapp and Berger were crocks which gave him the games). David Thompson was a better player.

Barmby, Gary Mac, Gerrard, Hamann were probably the key men in midfield that treble year. Then Vlad, Paddy and Biscan after he signed as well contributed a lot, Murphy remembered for the United goals.. Murphy became a regular more after that as transfer targets never came off, Le Tallec wasn't the new Zidane, a few midfielders left and we ended up with Salif Diao and Cheyrou (who wasn't the new Zidane). Murphy was never good enough to start regularly for a team pushing at the top and it was a key part of Houllier's downfall and mistakes that he was unable to upgrade on the likes of Murphy and Heskey who were first out the door when Rafa came in.

Didn't Houllier send him back to Crewe on loan in his early days because of Murphy's attitude?

Watched his highlights reel on YT: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=34ieituj0BY

Didn't realise he scored 44 goals for us, and a lot of them absolute scorchers.

How good was Danny Murphy? I recall him being a pretty solid player for us, but maybe he was better than I thought and just lived in the shadow of some bigger name players we had at the time? Interested to hear people's thoughts

Was a good midfielder at a time when the game wasn't really geared towards his type.  Solid lower-PL player, would've been the sort of midfielder that Rodgers would like, technically good but not particularly physical.  Good finisher too.

I always wanted him to do well because coming from Crewe and making it at a top club is a pretty cool story. He didn’t feature much at all in the first season we had him (97/98) and the following season he was loaned back to Crewe at some point. He started to get games in the Autumn of 2000 when we had a few injuries and had sold the likes of Ince. There was game where Gerrard scored his first goal for us against Sheffield Wednesday wheee Murphy and David Thompson scored as well which was nice.

From there he became a regular option for us and I think hit double figures in all comps in the Treble season.

He was a clever player and technically good like Tubby said. Didn’t have great pace. I think he won an England cap or two in 2001 before picking up an injury.

Ultimately he was one of our more reliable players for us around that time, while at the same time not quite being top quality (probably summed up why we were struggling a bit 03/04. He wanted to play central, I think he mainly played for us on either flank. Don’t think Rafa bombed him out, I think he threw his toys out and wanted to leave (could be wrong). Ended up at Charlton, then Aours before settling at Fulham. Probably ended up a good move for him.

Plenty of really good moments from his time here. Three Old Trafford winners and a Derby winner at Goodison too. Think he scored a screamer or two against Leeds as well. Not bad for a signing from the lower leagues.

He was pretty average but did pop up with goals. Was no big loss when Rafa fucked him off when he came in (especially as Garcia and Alonso came in that summer).

You could argue David Thompson was as good but Ged got rid of him and Murphy was one of his generals which worked out (Thompson then had terrible injuries).

Never really did anything noteworthy after leaving us before becoming a key player for Fulham with the Hodge.

Some of your takes are utterly bizarre....
Lallana offers nothing. Teixieira at least makes things happen.
.....It's clear as day Murphy was better than Thompson, only in planet Fromola does anybody think differently.  ;D

I am with Fromola, I loved DT, a real shame when he was sold and that he couldn’t realise his potential.  I remember leaving a spurs match when the oppo fans were raving about him and saying that the absence of his like was what was wrong with their club!

Quote
Danny Murphy: Former Liverpool and England midfielder became addicted to cocaine after retirement

Former England midfielder Danny Murphy says he became addicted to cocaine after his playing career ended.

Murphy played for Crewe Alexandra, Liverpool, Charlton Athletic, Tottenham, Fulham and Blackburn Rovers before retiring in 2013.

He has since moved into punditry and works for BBC Sport as well as other outlets, including Talksport.

"When you don't have football, problems become huge," 47-year-old Murphy told the Ben Heath Podcast.

"When you play football, the adrenaline and dopamine, all these things keep you forward-thinking and energetic.

"I had a spell on cocaine and smoking some weed. The drink, I could live without it. I wasn't an alcoholic. I could sit in a house with alcohol and not drink it."

Asked if he was addicted to cocaine, Murphy said: "For a while I was. I got to the point where I thought I couldn't do things without it. Which was nonsense, of course I could.

"You manage it initially, you might do it once a week, twice a week, give yourself an extra third day. Eventually it builds up and grabs hold of you."

But he said he found support and therapy helped him tackle his issues.

Having started his career with Crewe Alexandra, Murphy joined Liverpool in 1997.

He spent seven years at Anfield and was part of the squad that won the FA Cup, League Cup and Uefa Cup in 2001.

Murphy earned his nine England caps while he was with Liverpool.

A spell with Charlton Athletic followed, before he left The Valley to join Tottenham Hotspur in January 2006.

He moved across London to Fulham and helped them to the Europa League final in 2010 and ended his career after a spell at Blackburn.

Murphy said he "had a year of being in a world of pain" after finishing his career but "that year to 18 months from 2017" had given him "a desire to be better that I didn't have before".

He added that he believed it was common for former players to have similar issues to him and that he was "amazed" how many had reached out to him.

Dr Michael Bennett, director of player wellbeing at the Professional Footballers' Association (PFA), said the union "regularly supports" members who have developed addictions when Everton midfielder Dele Alli spoke of his sleeping pill addiction.

Former Liverpool and Coventry City goalkeeper Chris Kirkland has also talked about being addicted to painkillers for the best part of a decade.

"I've had some real depths of despair," said Murphy. "There's a lot more help out there now.

"I think there is more, but you can never get a failsafe system."

Fair play for him coming out, but complete bellend, i remember him advocating we should appoint Hodgson as manager after Benitez was fired [which went well], still bitter that we sold him to Charlton & he missed out on a champions league winners medal, that he can't wait to have snide digs at us :wankers.
