The Wonderful World of Global Music
« on: October 6, 2021, 12:30:12 pm »
Perusing the threads here think its reasonable to say the music on RAWK is dominated by ´Rock´Music..there are electronic music threads and others so decided its time to open up to dedicated thread to the wonderful world of music outside the US-UK-EU Axis.

Im no expert on the matter but I've been listening to 'World Music' ( people get upset with that title fee free to suggest other) for 40 odd years now, initially thanks to Peels love of Reggae, then African music and then with the growth of Dance Music in the late 80's I started making my own exploration ( I found I had a taste for Columbian 'Çumbia' music ( no, not for that reason!)..then to more obscure outposts like Algerian Rai!....but now is probably the best time to discover music from around the World, not just recent but music made in the past 50 years.

Accessibility is the key and thanks to labels like Analog Africa, Soul Jazz,Mr.Bongo Records   and any many more you can hear an incredible range of  music....not just traditional but where Western influences and technology have filtered back...especially in Africa.

So where to start, well below is some compilations suggestions but I'm hoping some of you have hidden passion out there that you can share ideas.

Song Book 1 to 4 - Mr Bongo Records....a great place to start a complication of music from Africa , Latin America and Asia https://www.mrbongo.com/products/mr-bongo-record-club-volume-one-vinyl-2-lp-cd-1

Nigeria Soul Power 70 - Soul Jazz Records....get dancing!..

Mogadisco - Somalia 1972 to 1991 - Analog Africa ....reggae tinged atmospheric eastern african vibes

Cumbias Piscodelicas Vol 1 - Lion Records....Latino psychedelia  vibes

so much more...may add later...

Moroccan lad who used to sit beside me in work was mad impressed when I said I was listening to a moroccan band. Less so when the lyrics were apparently about death to his people and Independence for the Sahrawi in the Western Sahara. "Soundtrack to socialism in west africa"

Never have any idea what anyone is singing in half the shit I listen to. But I fucking love it all, socialism just wants a dance in all languages.

Adding Sahel Sounds as a great label to the list.

Chinabot is a great label also for mad good modern stuff from Asia. ^^^^^ This Own C - album is great. Idea was to try put traditional Japanese folk songs into a US RnB buzz. It's a cracker.

Analog Africa is a goldmine. According to discogs they have nearly 100 releases under their belt in 15 or so years and you can almost take your pick and find something great. They make lovely records too and each one seems to go up in price within weeks of release.

https://analogafrica.bandcamp.com/

An article on them:

'Africa has never ceased to be a hotbed for innovative sounds. Whether it’s the newest strains of electronic music from the past two decades – South African styles like kwaito, qqom and the ruthlessly fast Shangaan electro, Angolan kuduro and Egyptian electro chaabi – or more traditional genres like Congolese rumba and soukous, international DJs, record collectors and music fans remain curious and have embraced with open arms the depth of talent, ingenuity and innovation coming out of African countries. Analog Africa is a goldmine.

The Legends Of Benin and Orchestre Poly Rythmo were 2 early bangers on that label. Go back to that Benin compilation repeatedly. The Space Echo one from a couple of years ago is a major regret that I never managed to bag a physical copy.

Both these are brilliant (and I have the vinyl ;D)

Couple of my favourites of the year:

From my top ten of last year:

Going to see him in Birkenhead soon, can't wait!

And yes, Analog Africa are the kings...not had a duff one yet.

Let's not forget that crazy Zamrock stuff that seemed to come out of nowhere maybe 10 years ago. Blew my mind. Had never even heard of it. Proto garage punk coming out of southern central Africa? In the early-mid 70's? Are you kidding me?

What a tune this is: (the actual song is just the slightest touch faster than this...)

Worked on a documentary for this cult Uruguayan band from the 70's, and this song got stuck in my mind for weeks.

I recognize most of the names and songs in there yeah, but didn't know of the existence of that record. That's a great comp. Probably lacking some Fattoruso, Pena and Opa, but some really great names in there.

Cheers buddy, glad you enjoyed it.

That keyboard player is Hugo Fattoruso, one of the greatest and most accomplished Uruguayan and Latin American musicians ever imo. As I said, I worked on a doc for the band Opa, although it eventually morphed into a bio of Hugo's life, and the guy was a genius. He lived all over the world (Uruguay, Argentina, U.S, Brazil, etc.), and played with some of the top musicians of his time, and everyone revered him. Couldn't make a dime though, and for a time he had to play at a Las Vegas restaurant to makes ends meet. I will look out for that doc if you're interested mate, although I don't know if they ever made an English subbed version.

Great track from Dan Boadi, 1977.

If you listen to the keyboard parts you can tell it's inspired by Curtis Mayfield's 'Move On Up' but takes the groove somewhere else entirely. Lot of rotation in our house recently.

Yeah would love to see the documentary. Even the wiki has some serious players associated with Opa.

Probably one of my fave Youtube Channels. Think my intro was one of the Turkish mixes from a few years ago

I've just stumbled into Amapiano music from Africa thanks to a CNN story. Headed back over to Youtube and am currently entertaining my whole unit block with the amazing set by TxC.
