A giant of the game who changed the way it was played. His playing career was so glorious it pretty much overshadowed a managerial career where he won league titles in two of the top five European league as well as a world cup. And then he helped bring about Bayern's domestic dominance as an executive. Okay, so he was a bit crooked, but what's a little bribery between friends, eh?

RIP Franz.
A giant of the game. Fantastic player and a fantastic manager who had the foresight or good fortune to surround himself with the right people. He had corruption charges laid against him later, with World cup bids

but I don't think that will cloud the admiration many people had for him. I saw him play quite a few times, majestic was my adjective for him. A sad day.

Brilliant, game-changing footballer and world class coach. just a couple of months after the player he man-marked in the 1966 WC Final died too (both of them said that decision meant neither of them could play to their full potential that day). Developed that brilliant German side of the 80s/90s.
Terrible, corrupt administrator by that's par for the course.

True legend of the game.

As Kid I visited Melwood to watch Bayern train night before a game with us..and after their session I ran over and walked across the pitch between him and Muller getting their autographs and chatting a bit  Beckenbauer laughed as Muller couldnt speak English telling him what I was saying......a brush with greatness.

His nonchalant ability with the outside of his foot was amazing.  We used to watch VCRs of him loads as kids and my old man was adamant he was pigeon toed (my older brother was pigeon toed as a kid so I think he might have been trying to reassure my brother :D)

Per LFC History, he played 4 times in '71 and '72 seasons - Fairs Cup in 1970/71, ECWC in '71/72 (we played as Arsenal won the double). Evans hat-trick in the first game in the Fairs Cup, they won the following year 3-1 in the 2nd leg. You'll be shocked to learn taht Gerd muller scored twice. They lost to Rangers in the semis.

One of those names that conjures up European Nights at Anfield, along with Cruyff,  Mueller,  Vogts, Rocheteau and the  rest.
Perhaps that’s why we love European football so much. We got to see legendary players like him on the pitch at Anfield.
One of the all time greatest footballers.
