Been splashing some cash lately (at times thanks to market enabler).
-the launcher pro project. Simply because fede deserves it for his hard work. The free version is brilliant.

Just got myself a HTC Wildfire quite impressed with it so far so many features that I havent even figured out how to do the basic stuff yet like add a contact haha, anyway just wandering if there is a skype app for android phones had a quick look but couldnt see anything anybody have a skype app for an android phone?

For those who haven't got the update yet.

This is how to do it on a Desire:

Steps to install Froyo on HTC Desire

Step 1: Download the Android 2.2 firmware for the Desire from http://liveimage.htc.com/OTA_Bravo_Froyo_HTC_WWE_2.09.405.8-1.21.405.2_release4dua3bcrut4wrv30.zip.

Step 2: Rename the file update.zip and copy it to your microSD card via USB. [Note: make sure the file is named update.zip and not update.zip.zip.]

Step 3: Power down your Desire.

Step 4: Hold down the “Volume Down” button as you power the phone back on.

Step 5: A screen should appear showing your phone’s system searching for various files. Scroll down to “recovery” and press the “Power” button.

Step 6: When you see the triangle with an exclamation point symbol, press the “Power” and “Volume Up” buttons at the same time.

Step 7: From the menu that appears, select “Apply sdcard:update.zip.”

Step 8: When the screen displays “Install from sdcard complete” select “reboot system now” and wait for the phone to power back up.

I'm not the right person to ask. I'm just testing Android for a couple of weeks.

It is supposed to be faster, or so I've heard.

How to double battery life:

To also help with Battery Life you can do these steps exactly:
1) Turn your device ON and Charge the device for 8 hours or more
2) Unplug the device and Turn the phone OFF and charge for 1 hour
3) Unplug the device Turn ON wait 2 minutes and Turn OFF and charge for another hour.

Apparently you only have to do this once, and your battery life will increase dramatically for good.

I haven't actually done this yet, i'm doing it tomorrow..but here's where i found out about it.

Edit: and it should work on all phones, rooted or non-rooted.

I downloaded it the other day, thanks, just a shame it doesnt seem to update regularly! Fancied watching last nights eastenders on my lunch!

Must admit though, I do quite like the soccer score centre lite for keeping up to date with scores etc. If anyone has any other good recommendations, pass them on!

The beebplayer app was taken down because the BBC complained that it wasn't official yet the last we heard from them (12th July) they said that they will not be releasing an app for Android pending a BBC trust review. Thankfully i never removed beebplayer from my phone and every part of it still works perfectly.

There's still an iplayer app in the market called myPlayer that is free and works ok.

Can anybody help?

My dear old dad in a rush of blood got himself a Samsung Galaxy Apollo. Seems nice other than its PAYG on Orange and he is haemorrhaging money on it without making any calls.

I'm at his for a day or two and have had a quick look and it appears to be syncing data on its own and I can't find anything in its settings to stop this bar something that said 'certain apps will still sync data automatically'.

I've no experience with android so wondered if anyone might have some bright ideas.

Don't know about that model but the first thing I'd look to do is go into the settings and disable the data service, probably under 'wireless and networks' or something. Which may or may not need doing again every time the phone is rebooted. Or top up a tenner a month to get free unlimited internet and 300 texts, leave it on and use it as a smartphone is supposed to be used. His and your choice

Seriously though, does he only use it for calls? It seems a waste of money if that's the case.

Yep, I use that and you can download the programs onto your sd card at a higher quality than just streaming. Then play them back using RockPlayer. Although, I've got a crappy old T-Mobile Pulse and it's as choppy as fuck, but will probly be OK on a Desire or whatever.

I've found under Settings, Accounts & sync, 'Background data' but when you deselect it it says "some applications may still use the background data connection" which just seems bizarre. I think you're onto something here - he suffers from depression and has recently felt the need to go back on his meds - I think may have been feeling a bit downbeat at the time of purchase and thought a new gadget might have cheered himself up.

Its sad/frustrating for him being totally perplexed by gizmos as he's always been mad for them, I can remember him bringing home a Sinclair ZX80 kit back in the day and putting it all together. He didn't realise he had wifi, he reckons he told the installer fella not to bother as he didn't have any wifi gadgets at the time. So at least I've got his phone connected to that now.

I understand there might be some apps that can kill all data connections - 'toggle data' and 'quick settings'.
I'll investigate but it may be easier for him to sell it and just get a regular phone.

All I do for BBC iPlayer is set a shortcut from the webpage and open it as a bookmark from the homescreen, it works better than any app and recognises its a mobile device.
