Think it's going to take Gerrard time to change things there; if the way he set up his academy sides last season is anything to go by, particularly in European competition, his first inclination is not to be a Hodgson-type coach and manager.

Rodgers' Celtic lost to a club from Gibraltar in his first competitive game there - similarly, it was never going to be an instant fix at Rangers.

You don't have to win academy games, though, that's not their purpose. Secondly, the style of play is more often mandated, so you don't have a choice, regardless of what your own personal convictions are.

I think over the course of his career as a manager, people are possibly going to be disappointed in the style of play Gerrard prefers.

We're talking styles of play here. You think he's really a high line pressing coach at heart, but is bound by the players he has in Scotland, despite having the second-best squad in Scotland?

I'm not being sarcy here, but I really don't know why people think managers are these adaptable creatures who change their principles of play on the fly, when reality and history tells us that 99.9999% of managers/coaches stick to the same ideas from their first to their last day of coaching. You have to have a coaching philosophy, it's one of the first things coaching courses get you to write down and develop - and the style of play is a big part of that. Given the two managers who had the biggest impact on his career (Ged, Rafa), and his admiration for Hodgson, and the fact that so far, his Rangers team have only played a defensive counterattacking game, I don't see why anyone would think it'll be different in the future. He'll get better players, but his basic principles I bet will be the same - solid, defence-first, emphasis on not losing shape.

think gerrard doing the sensible thing in not changing too much in the aspect of the playing style. Beale and Macca surely helping him out loads as well.

Maybe if he gets his own team and set of players he might change his outlook.

I think it's probably a bit early to make any kind of determination on the type of manager he'll be.

This is the third competitive game of his managerial career; let's see where he and Rangers are in twelve months time.

They're playing much the same way as they did under Murtry, just better and with slightly better players
