Somehow, even though the band formed in 2004, I only heard Cultes des Ghoules for the first time yesterday, and I am absolutely hooked. This is some seriously fucking evil black metal, which isn't easy to pull off 30 years after the initial wave. Think De Mysteriis era Mayhem with Celtic Frost groove and Ruins of Beverast-style psychedelia (huh?  you say...). And to top it all off, some quite outstanding lyrics, from a Polish band singing in English, no less.

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=HDu_x6mYoPc

Here's a link to "Coven, or Evil Ways Instead of Love". Weird title, and an even weirder concept. The lyrics are in fact the script to a play, with each song being a scene. The story is of a woman succumbing to the lure of witchcraft and selling her soul to the Devil. It's such a novel way of writing music, and the same vocalist alternates between the voices of the different characters in quite spectacular fashion. Lyrics here: https://www.metal-archives.com/albums/Cultes_des_Ghoules/Coven%2C_or_Evil_Ways_Instead_of_Love/613755

For some more orthodox - but still brilliant - fare, check out the "Henbane" album and "Spectres Over Transylvania" EP.

I normally hate viral marketing, but I gotta say I'm loving youtube's recommendations feature. This band has me PUMPED, I feel like it's the early 90s again and I'm browsing the local dungeon-cum-metal-record-store in an era when nearly every purchase was fucking gold.
Haven't listened to them but figured I'd pop in and let you know that their latest album dropped a few days ago in case you didn't know.

Just watched a drumming documentary that featured Dave Lombardo from Slayer.

They showed a clip of the band playing “War Ensemble’.  It sounded fucking brilliant.  I’ve always been into classic rock and stuff and also got into punk and hardcore punk such as the Dead Kennedy’s.

Seems Slayer we’re heavily influenced by these genres and annoyed with myself for never giving them the time of day previously. Better late than never.

I know War Emsemble is from their 5th album but is it worth me starting from their 1st Album?

Matter of taste, I guess. I'm not a actually Slayer fan, but I like thrash metal in general. I'd recommend Reign in Blood and Seasons in the Abyss.

Yep, that's how I discovered them, since youtube tends to recommend new releases quite heavily. The new one is good but the previous 2 were what really got me hooked.

As for Slayer, I'd say Reign In Blood is their most punk album (apart from Undisputed Attitude, which is an album of punk covers). It's great. Hell Awaits is probably my favourite Slayer album but also probably the least punk.

Have to be Reign in Blood for me but I absolutely love the title track of South of Heaven, the intro is brilliant.

What's the documentary called?

Love Slayer, agree about Reign In Blood being their "punkiest" album, but also check out World Painted Blood.

Went to see Deafheaven in Gorilla on Monday night. Absolutely killed it. Sound in there was spot on for once. Much different to the performance when I last seen them supporting Russian Circles in the Ruby Lounge years ago.

Didn't know whether to put this here or in the Pink Floyd thread, but I picked this up this weekend:

Pink Floyd's The Wall covered in it's entirety by a wealth of stoner/sludge/doom artists. It's really quite brilliant.

Went to see Clutch on Saturday in Copenhagen. My expectations weren't too high since their last album hasn't impressed me like to two previous ones have. The concert was great - the energy these guys dish out is amazing. HOWEVER the revelation of the evening was one of the support bands, The Picturebooks. FUCK ME they played there was no tomorrow.

If you ever find them near you go check them out!

Here's a sample which honestly doesn't do their live performance justice at all!

Got that myself. Like it a lot but then again I like most of the artists on it individually.

Any fans of Venom/Motorhead should check out these guys. I just stumbled across them recently. I'll not post the album cover :)

Was recommended the band “Wiegedood” by a friend. Don’t listen as much to metal as I used to, but this is good stuff and very brutal. Sounds like a mix between Mayhem and early Burzum.

Yeah, I don't listen to a lot of pure death metal these days, but that one is pretty damned impressive.

I'm also really enjoying this reformed version of In the Woods... even though only the drummer now survives from the original incarnation. The latest album, "Cease the Day", surprisingly brings back a liberal dose of black metal screams that we haven't seen from them since the mid-90s. Good mix of progressive and "extreme" elements.

Well here was my top 10 albums for the year I came up with. Although I've since binged Nakkiga and Kriegsmaschine (the drumming is outstanding on that record) and would probably have them in instead of Carved Cross and Clandestine Blaze if I were to ammend it.

01) Psycroptic - As the Kingdom Drowns (https://youtu.be/9kBACkguBR0)
02) Spectral Wound - Infernal Decadence (https://youtu.be/8UYlP9fIsak)
03) Azaghal - Valo pohjoisesta (https://youtu.be/X50vzZACEjY)
04) Outre - Hollowed Earth (https://youtu.be/ELs2ZIMcM1k)
05) Acherontas - Faustian Ethos (https://youtu.be/CwqmbOsTvXg)
06) Gaerea - Unsettling Whispers (https://youtu.be/JkObUc-HSRE)
07) Clandestine Blaze - Tranquility of Death (https://youtu.be/Pc-OCB_J-hk)
08) Drudkh - They Often See Dreams About the Spring (https://youtu.be/iiRKjcmbUYc)
09) Carved Cross - The Yawning Abyss of Perdition (https://youtu.be/7qdpcWpm7eo)
10) Lucifer's Child - The Order (https://youtu.be/Xwx0MgQX-FM)

Shoutout
Svartidauði - Revelations of the Red Sword
Aorlhac - L'esprit des vents
Kroda - Selbswelt
Summoning - With Doom We Come
Nakkiga - Agurraren Harkaitza
Peste Noire - Peste Noire - Split - Peste Noire
Sargeist - Unbound
Watain - Trident Wolf Eclipse
Kriegsmaschine - Apocalypticists
Slidhr - The Futile Fires of Man

RÛR and 1914 had decent albums too. Most disappointing for the year was most definitely Behemoth.

Nice! Only have Gaerea, Drudkh, Aorlhac, Kroda, and Summoning from your list so have plenty more to check out. May try to do a lil list of my own. I keep a note on my phone for albums to check out in a given year and cross off when I buy one...looks like I got 45 new albums in 2018 to choose from.

Saw him at the Royal Albert Hall. And then 6 weeks later in a church doing acoustic in Leeds. Both superb. As my mate says, he's on here, when you see him in concert it's like having a spiritual experience.
I have seen him in concert,Anneke Van Giersbergen as well,I saw her when she was in The Gathering back in the 90's,what a fucking voice, her and Devin could sing the ingredients off a shampoo bottle and make it sound good :)
San Miguel,LFC and Prog Rock=The best place to be :)

So yeah, thread bump time... I am seriously digging latter-day Rotting Christ. I never got into them in the 90s,but this bombastic sound they've adopted in the last decade is superb. I've bought "Rituals" and "Heretics" off bandcamp to celebrate my modest pay rise.
