It looks like a 1.4-1.7s time difference between the medium and soft.

Not all teams did a soft tyre run.

fuck, that is some drop, usually half that if not less?

big gap from 3rd to 4th in fp1

That aston martin is looking promising

I dont rate Stroll too highly but even him in 6th is decent going given he hasnt tested

I'm just going by what the drivers did on each compound (fuel load etc is an unknown though);

Perez (m) 1:34.343 (s) 1:32.758
Verstappen (m) 1:35.429 (s) 1:33.375
Alonso (m) 1:34.867 (s) 1:33.196

Worth noting the Red Bulls did their soft runs much earlier than Aston Martin but yesr. that Aston looks good.

Neither Ferrari or Mercedes did soft tyre running, presumably saving for the evening session which is closer to qualifying conditions.

We'll get a better idea in Practice 2. Practice 1 & 3 is a bit shit with it being the middle of the day.

Well, Hamilton 0.4s off the Ferrari and 0.1s faster than the Aplines after first few soft tyre runs…..

Verstappen complaining about bouncing.

What practice tells me is this….

You need two testing sessions not one.

They were just saying on Sky that although there was a big gap between the compounds in FP1, they expect the real delta to be closer to 0.5s.

Alonso 0.17s ahead of Perez and Verstappen. Hamilton 0.6s off the pace.

All the aerodynamicists Aston Martin got from Mercedes and Red Bull seem to be doing the job.

Hard to say on fuel loads but even if Red Bull is down on power/heavier on fuel, it is still a massive step forward for the Aston Martin team.

The rest of the field looks encouragingly close too.

Just looking at the race pace;

Verstappen = 1:37.2 average
Perez = 1:37.7
Leclerc = 1:38.0
Sainz = 1:38.3
Alonso = 1:37.4
Hamilton = 1:38.4

I assume heads have already rolled....but two shoddy seasons in a row on the horizon for a team who won eight constructors titles in a row is piss poor.

Mercedes even further behind than last year.

I really hope this isn’t anotherboring season where Verstappen storms away. It looks like Alonso might be in contention for races which would be interesting.

Lewis Hamilton says that Mercedes are "on the wrong track" with their new car at the start of the 2023 season.

The seven-time world champion was eighth in Friday practice, 0.636 seconds slower than the pace-setting Aston Martin of Fernando Alonso.

Hamilton said: "We found out we are a long way off. We kind of knew that a little bit in the test but it is a big gap.

"I am trying everything I can out there but it is what it is."

Hamilton implied that he felt Mercedes had taken the wrong design direction with their car for this season.

"It is difficult for everyone and not where everyone in the team wants to be and not where they deserve to be," he said.

"Everyone continues to work so hard and is so courageous and thoughtful but we are just on the wrong track. We have to graft away and try to get ourselves on the right track."

"We are kind of where we were last year, if not a little bit further behind."
"And there are red and white scarves of Liverpool, and red and white bobble hats of Liverpool, and red and white rosettes of Liverpool, and nothing else. And the sun shines now."

Hmmm…. Not so sure … I think their race pace won’t be so bad, but it wouldn’t surprise me at all of one of the, didn’t make q3… I don’t expect either of them to make the front two rows.
