Anti Brexit Corbyn here absuktkey tipping into the EU.

He’s a hard brexiteer. He’s every bit as much of a duplicitous c*nt as Rees Mogg.

As noted by several of us previously, from The Times (paywall)

Quote
Europe’s top official offered Britain a legal guarantee that it would not be trapped by the Irish backstop last night but was immediately rebuffed by Brexiteer MPs.

Martin Selmayr, the European Union’s most senior civil servant, spent 90 minutes with members of the Brexit select committee, who emerged saying that he was prepared to make significant concessions on Theresa May’s withdrawal agreement.

Mr Selmayr offered to give the prime minister a legally binding assurance that the backstop would not lock Britain into a permanent customs union with the EU, the MPs said.

Any such shift would allow Mrs May to say that she had secured fundamental changes to her deal, which fell to a heavy defeat in the Commons last month.

However, the Brexiteers on the committee, including the Conservative MPs Andrea Jenkyns and John Whittingdale, a former culture secretary, rebuffed Mr Selmayr.

Pat McFadden, a Labour member of the committee, said that Mr Selmayr had asked the Brexit-supporting MPs whether they would vote for Mrs May’s deal if such a change were made. “They weren’t able to,” he said.

One MP present said that Mr Selmayr specifically pressed Ms Jenkyns over whether the adjustments would change her mind. “She was unable to say so,” the MP said. “When he pressed her, she said ‘maybe 80 per cent’ of the way.”

The proposal from Mr Selmayr, who is secretary-general of the European Commission, involves making assurances given last month by Jean-Claude Juncker and Donald Tusk legally binding. In a letter — which at the time was dismissed by Brexiteers as meaningless words — Mr Juncker, president of the commission, and Mr Tusk, president of the European Council, said the backstop would be temporary.

For added humour, Selmayr took to twitter to explain he wasn't actually offering it. Just making the point that the ERG won't ever be satisfied.

"On the EU side, nobody is considering this. Asked whether any assurance would help to get the Withdrawal Agreement through the Commons, the answers of MPs were ... inconclusive .... The meeting confirmed that the EU did well to start its no deal preparations in December 2017."

Japan's EU deal 'threatens post-Brexit UK industry'

Alarm raised after Nissan decision to halt expansion of Sunderland car plant

Meredith Crowley, a trade specialist economist at Cambridge University, said: “The risk is that the free trade agreement between the EU and Japan plus the uncertainty about the relationship between the UK and the EU will mean that the Japanese will ship things to the European and cut Britain out of the loop.”

Business groups estimate that the potential benefit of the EU-Japan deal to the UK would be £3bn a year if Britain stayed in the EU. “It could be a huge lost opportunity, which is why manufacturers are so keen to avoid a cliff-edge Brexit,” said Seamus Nevin, the chief economist at the UK manufacturers’ body, the EEF.

Other experts believe the EU-Japan deal will make it harder for the UK to attract inward investment. The gradual tapering of car tariffs from 10% to zero within seven years would make it easier to produce in Japan and then export to the EU, said David Bailey, the professor of industrial strategy at Aston business school.

The Japan-EU trade deal has me wondering; why do Brexiteers think that the UK will be able to negotiate more advantageous trade deals alone than we were able to collectively as part of the EU? Serious question, I would like to know if there is any advantage. This seems to be a really big deal for Brexiteers as it's the one issue blocking us from staying in the customs union. Has anyone read a detailed explanation of what the advantages may actually be of negotiating our own trade deals?

As soon as the tarrifs go, the industry can just move to wherever it's cheapest / easiest to import from, eg. from UK to Japan.

I’ve often wondered the same as surely the economies of scale will ensure an EU negotiated trade deal will be far superior to a UK one.

I’d suggest it’s a populist smokescreen from Brexiters in a ‘taking back control’ manner

Begs the question, can you be left wing or centre left if you approve of 0 tarrifs?
I think you have to understand why we have tariffs at customs. to protect our home market, one of the first things a UK trade negotiator should do is work out what goods etc do we need to protect and come to a agreement to protect them with tariffs and quotas otherwise cheaper countries exploiting their workforce will undercut us, one of the best examples is Oranges. nobody grows Oranges in this country therefore we have no problem allowing Oranges to be imported tariff free which they are. a picture of a big supermarket fruit stall was going around the internet last year in response to the ERGs claim of being able to have zero tariffs on certain fruits etc, the photo pointed to nearly every fruit imported, everything was already coming in tariff free as we can't grow these fruits in this country anyway.
I can only go on what Corbyn said one Sunday morning last year.
Shocked me. He argued EU tariffs are protectionist. they drive down wages in poorer countries outside the EU as bosses are forced to pay lower wages to compete,!!!!
Theres so much wrong with his argument, he is thinking more about the poor in other countries than the people of this country, he assumes bosses outside the EU  who exploit their workforce will pass on the savings from no tariffs. he is arguing a trickle down economy in poorer countries.

Because they don't understand it, but it's someone else's problem. "Someone will sort it, just get on with it".

They don't care about trade deals, they don't understand what impact they have on their lives. But someone told them it'll be all rosy so they just come out with the same shite.

'Advantages' wouldn't be my word for it, but there are certainly corporations who would benefit.

The prime minister has said the "potential indefinite nature" of the backstop is what she will look to address with the EU.

Theresa May, speaking to business leaders in Belfast, said Parliament wanted "changes to the backstop as it currently exists".

She added that there were a "number of ways" to amend the backstop.

Analysis: The backstop isn't going away

John Campbell, BBC News NI Business Editor

For some Brexit supporters in Mrs May's party the message is simple - bin the backstop.

But in answers to questions after her Belfast speech, she seemed clear that a withdrawal deal will need a backstop of some sort.

She said: "There is no suggestion that we are not going to ensure in the future there is provision for this insurance policy... the backstop.

"What parliament has said... is that they want to see changes to the backstop as it currently exists within the protocol, as part of the withdrawal agreement."

That may put her at odds with members of her own party who want radical change to the backstop.

A reminder of what the Brady amendment that Parliament voted in favour of actually says

and requires the Northern Ireland backstop to be replaced with alternative arrangements to avoid a hard border; supports leaving the European Union with a deal and would therefore support the Withdrawal Agreement subject to this change.

Quote
Earlier on Tuesday, DUP leader Arlene Foster said the "toxic backstop" remained the problem.

Brussels was "unfortunately turning their face against that" and needed respect for unionism in NI, she said.

Mrs Foster spoke out as the European Commission confirmed the prime minister will visit Brussels on Thursday for talks with its president Jean-Claude Juncker.

This follows a visit by Taoiseach (Irish Prime Minister) Leo Varadkar on Wednesday.

"We have heard a lot about their understanding of the Belfast Agreement, that they don't want a hard border on the island of Ireland," Mrs Foster told the BBC's Good Morning Ulster programme.

"But they are quite content, apparently, to build a hard border between Northern Ireland and the rest of the United Kingdom, thereby interfering with the constitutional position of the United Kingdom."

...

The prime minister addressed this and said although she has said technology could play a part in managing the Irish border, it needs to work for the "particular circumstances" of Northern Ireland.

Last July, during a speech in Belfast, Mrs May said no technology had been designed or implemented anywhere in the world yet to address the complexities of the Irish border.

Short answer - because they are fucking idiots. They are convinced about English Exceptionalism and hanker for the Days of Empire when Britannia Ruled The Waves. All you needed to do was talk loudly to foreigners in and English accent and they would automatically understand the natural superiority of an English public school education...

And all that other bullshit...

It's the '...they need us more than we need them...' mindset.

Yep. In One. That bullshit Brady amendment was designed purely to allow the fucking gimp-faced fucknugget in No.10 more time to stall and to send us all to a No-deal cuntskin of a situation. Fan-cunting-tastic.

Anyone decided aside from drinking gallons - what they're doing on 29th March yet?

DUP's Sammy Wilson says his party will not back the #Brexit deal unless the backstop is removed, as it "does not honour [Theresa May's] own manifesto or the outcome of the referendum"

https://twitter.com/BBCPolitics/status/1092760450331160577

He actually said that the backstop is designed to keep the UK in the single market and customs union, which would not honour the referendum.

Either electrifying the fence or wishing Brexiters a happy Brexit Day for end of June. See which closer to the day.
