I imagine it is from around 2009 when the Republic of Ireland held a second vote on the Treaty of Lisbon. The first referendum had rejected the treaty a year before. The context was the development of a Constitution for the European Union, with which a number of electorates had concerns. Changes were made in the light of these concerns and those changes put again to the voters, giving rise to the charge (still seen today) that They^TM would keep putting the question until the answer They wanted was achieved.

Corbyn's conflation of the EU with NATO is an interesting reveal from the clip.

Europe’s top official offered Britain a legal guarantee that it would not be trapped by the Irish backstop last night but was immediately rebuffed by Brexiteer MPs.

Martin Selmayr, the European Union’s most senior civil servant, spent 90 minutes with members of the Brexit select committee, who emerged saying that he was prepared to make significant concessions on Theresa May’s withdrawal agreement.

Mr Selmayr offered to give the prime minister a legally binding assurance that the backstop would not lock Britain into a permanent customs union with the EU, the MPs said.

Any such shift would allow Mrs May to say that she had secured fundamental changes to her deal, which fell to a heavy defeat in the Commons last month.

However, the Brexiteers on the committee, including the Conservative MPs Andrea Jenkyns and John Whittingdale, a former culture secretary, rebuffed Mr Selmayr.

Pat McFadden, a Labour member of the committee, said that Mr Selmayr had asked the Brexit-supporting MPs whether they would vote for Mrs May’s deal if such a change were made. “They weren’t able to,” he said.

One MP present said that Mr Selmayr specifically pressed Ms Jenkyns over whether the adjustments would change her mind. “She was unable to say so,” the MP said. “When he pressed her, she said ‘maybe 80 per cent’ of the way.”

The proposal from Mr Selmayr, who is secretary-general of the European Commission, involves making assurances given last month by Jean-Claude Juncker and Donald Tusk legally binding. In a letter — which at the time was dismissed by Brexiteers as meaningless words — Mr Juncker, president of the commission, and Mr Tusk, president of the European Council, said the backstop would be temporary.

For added humour, Selmayr took to twitter to explain he wasn't actually offering it. Just making the point that the ERG won't ever be satisfied.

"On the EU side, nobody is considering this. Asked whether any assurance would help to get the Withdrawal Agreement through the Commons, the answers of MPs were ... inconclusive .... The meeting confirmed that the EU did well to start its no deal preparations in December 2017."

I’ve often wondered the same as surely the economies of scale will ensure an EU negotiated trade deal will be far superior to a UK one.

I think you have to understand why we have tariffs at customs. to protect our home market, one of the first things a UK trade negotiator should do is work out what goods etc do we need to protect and come to a agreement to protect them with tariffs and quotas otherwise cheaper countries exploiting their workforce will undercut us, one of the best examples is Oranges. nobody grows Oranges in this country therefore we have no problem allowing Oranges to be imported tariff free which they are. a picture of a big supermarket fruit stall was going around the internet last year in response to the ERGs claim of being able to have zero tariffs on certain fruits etc, the photo pointed to nearly every fruit imported, everything was already coming in tariff free as we can't grow these fruits in this country anyway.

Shocked me. He argued EU tariffs are protectionist. they drive down wages in poorer countries outside the EU as bosses are forced to pay lower wages to compete,!!!!
Theres so much wrong with his argument, he is thinking more about the poor in other countries than the people of this country, he assumes bosses outside the EU  who exploit their workforce will pass on the savings from no tariffs. he is arguing a trickle down economy in poorer countries.

The prime minister has said the "potential indefinite nature" of the backstop is what she will look to address with the EU.

Theresa May, speaking to business leaders in Belfast, said Parliament wanted "changes to the backstop as it currently exists".

She added that there were a "number of ways" to amend the backstop.

For some Brexit supporters in Mrs May's party the message is simple - bin the backstop.

But in answers to questions after her Belfast speech, she seemed clear that a withdrawal deal will need a backstop of some sort.

She said: "There is no suggestion that we are not going to ensure in the future there is provision for this insurance policy... the backstop.

"What parliament has said... is that they want to see changes to the backstop as it currently exists within the protocol, as part of the withdrawal agreement."

That may put her at odds with members of her own party who want radical change to the backstop.

A reminder of what the Brady amendment that Parliament voted in favour of actually says

This follows a visit by Taoiseach (Irish Prime Minister) Leo Varadkar on Wednesday.

"We have heard a lot about their understanding of the Belfast Agreement, that they don't want a hard border on the island of Ireland," Mrs Foster told the BBC's Good Morning Ulster programme.

"But they are quite content, apparently, to build a hard border between Northern Ireland and the rest of the United Kingdom, thereby interfering with the constitutional position of the United Kingdom."

The prime minister addressed this and said although she has said technology could play a part in managing the Irish border, it needs to work for the "particular circumstances" of Northern Ireland.

Last July, during a speech in Belfast, Mrs May said no technology had been designed or implemented anywhere in the world yet to address the complexities of the Irish border.
