And again  :butt

It’s a thread about coronavirus and it’d be good to see the latest news and what’s going on rather than just seeing you trying to come across as knowing more than everyone else and getting the arse when it’s shown that you don’t.

Might be a good point to the end this "debate" on then? Bickering over minutae and slight differences is a bit a waste of cyberspace, yes.

You already did, you chose not to engage with the points that showed up your assertions as incorrect. But yes, would be good if you could also now stop moving the thread away from discussions on the topic too.

Not sure how widespread it was, and I get odd push alerts cos of chronic stuff landing me in algorithms flagging up 'vulnerable', but I got a text from NHS about this. Basically saying 'if you think you've got it, call us - don't go to your GP'. Assume most one can really do for prevention is just step up on hand hygiene, as well as not being a tramp with coughs and sneezes?

Yep, be thorough in handwashing and 'catch' sneezes in a tissue and bin it.

If you're out and about, a pair of gloves isn't the worst idea. Aside from the immediate protection from fomites, it helps remind you not to touch your eyes and mouth in between washing your hands (in a less dramatic way than wearing a mask, which evidence shows really doesn't protect you - only somewhat protects others if you are carrying an infection)

That rate is 2.3% but is a flawed formula comparing deaths with cases (most of which are subject to ongoing treatment).

A more accurate formula is comparing death numbers v those that have recovered.  This is circa 10%.  But it is a moving number presently.

Well, I’m not sure if you’re right or wrong on this, but being from HK, the number that we have been given is 2%, as it seems that a large majority of cases diagnosed go under the mild category (over 80% at last count), and only about 10% are supposed to be considered serious or critical cases. Of those cases, the mortality rate is between 10-20%, or something like that, as you said the line keeps moving. A lot of this data comes from China, so anyone can contest their authenticity. But it seems to be playing out the same way across the world.

SARS I remember was around 17%, and it was a lot deadlier than this today. The infection rate was not high, but once you were infected, you had a 1 in 5 chance of dying. The prevailing medical theory we’re getting here is that the easier for the virus to transmit, the less likely it will be fatal, at least when it comes to coronaviruses.

Our city is currently the laughingstock of the world, we have people stockpiling toilet paper, among other things (there was even an armed robbery where they stole 600 12 roll packs of toilet paper). It’s so embarrassing, put it down to people believing in anything they’re sent on social media.

On the other hand, because of our experience with SARS and the subsequent flu’s, it looks like we’ve literally stamped out this year’s flu season. People are religiously washing their hands, everyone’s got a mask on, making sure we don’t touch our face without washing. People are also spending less time in crowded places voluntarily, and cleaning public facilities on a constant basis. The amount of cases we got even though we are just across the border from Guangdong province is honestly quite impressive.

But for the most part, people are getting a bit more relaxed now. I was out hiking today, and the trails are chock full of people. It’s like the start of spring for us, the temperature’s warm, and the weather’s nice. People can finally get out to get some exercise in fresh air, since all the gyms are closed.

Your '2%' figure will relate to the comparison of deaths against total cases but in terms of referring to 'actual' mortality rate is flawed (as per my previous post).  My source is the following;

https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/coronavirus-death-rate/

Your Sars figure is accurate as this refers to the 'actual' rate after the event.

The following is also interesting;

Is there a breaking point with viruses where the capacity to treat people affects mortality? As in, preventable deaths happen as services are overwhelmed?

I was reading about this earlier, akbeit from a random Redditor and not a verifie expert by any means. Apparently the percentage of peopel with the virus that require treatment with ventilators is high, meaning that health services will be quickly overwhelmed, with the knock on effect of the death rate from Coronavirus and other unrelated things rising.

Latest from the Guardian.  Gives an indication of the seriousness of the current situation.  To respond to your question this will primarily be informed by how 'serious' this becomes which is still unknown and will obviously be impacted by resources at a country level within respective health services.

Nobody really knows. Its not known how many more people will have it, whether the isolation period needs to be longer, whether it will mutate more, whether its been passed on to other areas and we are just waiting for it to be known.

The last few days have been particularly grim because of it really increasing in the middle east and europe. All the communication yesterday and today from the authorities doesnt seem very positive.

Four of UK lot taken off the Cruise liner have tested positive.

These 4 apparently are now at Arrowe Park, and flight back included government officials and health workers.  Sky reporting they tested positive before they left but results weren’t released until they returned to UK.  Don’t know how accurate that report is.

I doubt any such restrictions will curtail the spread of the disease now. But it might slow the infection rate some, which means that health facilities will be under less stress. But surely, there will come a time where anything done now will seem like a drop in the ocean.

I suppose this only goes to show that we are lucky that the virus appears to be relatively non-lethal. Some day, of course, there will be something as (or more) virulent and with a much higher mortality rate. Something has to shift in how meat industry operates across the world before it is too late.

Again I have no experience or knowledge of this but is it really possible that this lasts up to then? I mean that's 4 to 6 months.

Surely having 4 to 6 months of major restrictions to travel and the general public is just as damaging as the disease itself.

I dunno, a ban on travel (and thus imports/exports) would certainly result in deaths, and the effect of no travel on the economy would cause all kinds of issues. Probably bigger issues than the virus.
