Sloe Gin - you can make it now!
« on: September 25, 2007, 11:23:46 am »
It's this time of the year where you can go out and pick your sloe berries to make Sloe Gin.  :lickin Is anyone out there a fan of it? It's really easy to make....

Roughly equal measure by volume of sloes, sugar and gin (eg 1lb sloes to 1lb sugar to 1.3 litre gin)

Pick the berries, then either score / prick skin, add to bottle, add sugar, then add gin. Shake twice a day until the sugar dissolves and put in the back of a dark cupboard and forget about it for at least a year!

Enjoy!  :lickin

My mum does it every year, it's a bit too sweet for my liking, a glass or two isn't bad

My dad makes it. Yum.

It is quite sweet, but you're only really supposed to drink it in glasses the size of port / sherry glasses. It's so easy to drink though, considering it's neat gin. Always reminds me of the cherry (deep red) medicine as a kid!

Ah, you fell for that one? You thought your mum was giving you medicine to get you to sleep?  ;)

Been getting into Sloe Gin of late (drinking it, not making it, fuck that).

This is my go-to Sloe Gin at the mo.   1 part gin, 3 parts Fevertree tonic  (50ml - 150ml)

Any other recommendations?

I really hope Rob likes Sloe Gin :)

Thats spooky Terry

I was listening to Joe Bonamassa only yesterday on the radio and was going to pop into the guitar thread to mention how good he is.

Great guitarist with tons of feel.
My type of player.
There's playing fast and shredding to impress the masses and there is a proper feel where you can feel the guitarist bearing their soul.
Joe Bonamassa does that in absolute spades.

Take out the tonic is my recommendation.

M+S version is surprisingly good

There is another option. Mr Ferguson organises the fixtures in his office and sends it to us and everyone will know and cannot complain. That is simple.

Look out for damsons over the next few weeks. Damsons, sugar and Aldi gin. 3 months in a dark cupboard and then a perfect drink for winter nights.

Surely not drink it straight?

Or do you recommend a different mixer?

I miss having access to my mum's damson trees for that reason but we have lots of sloes here so going to have a go at that instead 👍

Straight for me. But…the ABV was around 20%, not 38 or in the 40s like conventional gins so not as harsh. A quick google suggests neat is a traditional way to drink it, to be honest, never had it with a mixer, though Mrs LS did.

ah ok.  I really enjoy it with tonic (so refreshing).  The Melodist is 29% ABV, but I think I'll try one neat tonight and see what I think.

Don't laugh at me LS.  I went out for a meal and a few wines with my missus.  Got home and had a cup of tea and a bourbon biscuit :)

Will try again with the Sloe Gin tonight.  Off work tomorrow.
