I had a message from a lad on here awhile back thanking me for introducing him to Bill Hicks and telling me he'd decided to go into stand-up comedy on the back of discovering him, the lad was 16 at the time, simply through googling my username he got into Bill. Not long later he messaged me again introducing me to Doug, he'd apparently been on the same bill with him in Manchester.

All very rewarding all round :D

Firstly you must always implicitly obey orders, without attempting to form any opinion of your own regarding their propriety. Secondly, you must consider every man your enemy who speaks ill of your king; and thirdly you must hate a Frenchman as you hate the devil.

Nelson sounds a bit of a dick from them quotes - basically saying don't make up your own mind about anything because the king/commanding officer knows better?

Well, Nelson didn't follow his own advice. He disobeyed orders more than once.

At the Battle of Copenhagen, he deliberately ignored  a signal to withdraw:

Not really, they had no concept of an illegal order and needed instant obediance to control their ships in those days. I think his record shows that whatever he thought about naval warfare was probably right.

Not really - for a soldier in battle you have to obey orders or someone around you is going to get killed. That doesn't excuse the "I was only obeying orders" defence for those who took part in the holocaust for example.

"Patriotism is the last refuge of the scoundrel" Samuel Johnson

Possibly the most misused quote of all time. A lot of people seem to think that Johnson was against patriotism, whereas there is no context to the quote at all and no-one really seems to know what he was talking about.

Can I ask why this is excused then? not just the holocaust but any situation where the dilemma is kill or be killed?

Playing Civ IV have ya lad? :D

Whenever I see the quotes in a non Civ 4 context, I still hear it as Leonard Nimoy's voice in my head.

Been reading a lot of George R. R. Martin. The Song of Ice and Fire is stacked with awesome quotes.

"The First Sword of Braavos does not run." - Syrio Forel

"I'll raise an army and fight him for you. The singers will call it the War for Cersei's c*nt." - Jaime Lannister

"Stick them with the pointy end." - Jon Snow

"The man that passes the sentence must swing the sword. You must look into his eyes and hear his last words. If you cannot do that, then maybe he does not deserve death. The lord who uses hangmen soon forgets what death is." - Eddard Stark

"When you play the game of thrones, you win or you die. There is no middle ground." - Cersei Lannister

"Remember, all dwarves are bastards, but not all bastards need be dwarves." - Tyrion Lannister

But there is a grain of truth in it, plenty of people have hid behind a flag and used patriotism to deflect any criticism. That's why politicians love it.

You ask, what is our policy? I will say: It is to wage war, by sea, land and air, with all our might and with all the strength that God can give us: to wage war against a monstrous tyranny, never surpassed in the dark, lamentable catalogue of human crime. That is our policy. You ask, what is our aim? I can answer in one word: It is victory, victory at all costs, victory in spite of all terror, victory, however long and hard the road may be; for without victory, there is no survival.

Upon this battle depends the survival of Christian civilisation. Upon it depends our own British life and the long continuity of our institutions and our Empire. The whole fury and might of the enemy must very soon be turned on us now. Hitler knows that he will have to break us in this island or lose the war. If we can stand up to him, all Europe may be free and the life of the world may move forward into broad, sunlit uplands. But if we fail, then the whole world, including the United States, including all that we have known and cared for, will sink into the abyss of a new Dark Age, made more sinister, and perhaps more protracted, by the lights of perverted science. Let us therefore brace ourselves to our duties, and so bear ourselves that, if the British Empire and its Commonwealth last for a thousand years, men will still say, 'This was their finest hour.'

A couple of Churchill's speeches from 1940.

The hour has come; kill the Hun.

The line he would have ended his radio broadcast with had the Germans invaded.
