Has anyone else used it?

Have just been invited and will provide review of it once I've messed about with it

It lets you watch the BBC shows online. You can see the majority of shows broadcast over the past 7 sevens days and a small percentage of their archive material. The hope is with in a year you will be able to watch the majority of the shows that BBC has in it's archive's online.

Just go to www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer and register for the Beta.

Waste of space to be honest, the BBC should spend the money wasted on it on making some decent programmes.

Nice idea in theory but in the world of torrents people aren't going to bother with all the DRM crap, the fact it has to be watched through a PC, so unless you connect your computer to a telly you are stuck with a small screen kind of makes it pointless.

Missed Jekyll at the weekend, it's available on iPlayer for the next couple of days but I'm downloading it on torrent, I'll be able to watch it when I want and watch it on a proper telly, yes the legality is questionable but I think I'll manage to live with it.

Both my operating systems and anything remotely new. Nice one BBC.

Yes, expires in 3 days, if you apply for the beta now you probably won't be accepted in time.

You could just obtain it here http://www.torrentspy.com/torrent/1826113/Top_Gear_Polar_Special_HDTV_XviD_BiA_avi

Anybody else having problems with this or the bbc homepage?

I'm still having probs, thought it may have been overload on their server/network, but I#ve been trying since 10pm - 6am with no joy, watching the match now and checked at HT...Still no joy.

Anyone got any ideas? Was working on Thurs (watched Apprentice) but since then the only thing I have done is add Tversity to my Lappie, could this have caused a problem?

This is really bugging me now............any and all help appreciated as ever.

Problems when watching iPlayer
« Reply #23 on: October 4, 2012, 10:18:40 am »
When watching a video on iplayer, itvplayer 4od etc etc. The video will keep freezing for a second, and then continuing. It makes that kind of computerized noise, like as if the whole laptop is frozen, but it does just continue. It has now started to do it every minute or so, and is making watching anything pretty hard.

I don't really know how to explain it properly, so googling hasn't been very successful, anyone any ideas on what I mean/solutions?

if you're not seeing a buffering message, then it's probably not your internet connection - but probably worth running speedtest a few times, and seeing if it's running constantly at the same speed.

Taking a wild stab in the dark, I would guess it's writing to the disk which is probably the 'computer' noise that you're hearing.. Is your hard drive really full? If the drive is full or nearly full, or hasn't been defragged for ages, I would definitely do that anyway.

I would personally recommend using Advanced System Care,  - it's free, and it's pretty good.

Speed is running fine, and the laptops a month old, so my hard drive isn't full or anything. Will not that down for future though.

The noise is that noise you get when your computer completely freezes and makes that annoying constant sound.

Annoyingly hard to explain what is happening.

With Virgin, but it does it at home aswell, with BT. I can never test the mouse as it is literally a second or less it does it for.

Does it play video in VLC etc okay? If you're only having trouble with streaming media, I'd reinstall flash and try again, if it still does it, disable any browser extensions you have and try again. If its still playing up, go onto YouTube and enable the HTML5 option and see how that plays, if you're still having the issue with that, contact your manufacturer.

As already suggested, looking at  Flash player seems a good starting point, but I'm interested if you're using wireless to view these channels? If you are and re-installing flash does not solve the issue, try using a physical cable to connect your laptop to your modem/router. I solved a similar (not exactly the same) issue by narrowing down the problem to wifi disconnects.

As always, it's a process of elimination :wave

Will keep that in mind, but as it is the same in two different houses, one on Virgin, one on BT, would that make a difference, or could it be the Laptop?

BBC unveils new vision for the BBC iPlayer of the future

The BBC today unveiled its vision for the next generation BBC iPlayer, evolving its popular video on-demand service for audiences in the future. The new service will see it move from a broadcast TV catch-up service to the BBC’s primary digital entertainment destination.

The BBC today unveiled its vision for the next generation BBC iPlayer, evolving its popular video on-demand service for audiences in the future. The new service will see it move from a broadcast TV catch-up service to the BBC’s primary digital entertainment destination.

The BBC’s vision for new iPlayer focuses on three key areas:

    A greater range of content
New ways of watching BBC TV shows
    Innovative new features

In the future, BBC iPlayer will experiment with:

Pop-up channels - around specific events or festivals such as Glastonbury, curated by key talent
Online channels - such as Radio 1 TV, Arts or Science
More exclusive content - building on the success of comedy pilots for BBC Three
The ability to create your own evening schedule - with access to more content before it is on TV
An extended window to watch increasing from seven to 30 days*
Ability to pause and resume TV viewing from one screen to another
    More relevant and personalised recommendations

In the future, BBC iPlayer will introduce more programming made exclusively for online audiences for much-loved BBC shows like EastEnders, Doctor Who and Strictly Come Dancing, and themed collections from the BBC’s Archive.

As audiences are increasingly accessing BBC content at a time and on a device that suits them, the BBC will make it easier for fans to watch what they want, when and where they want to, and introduce the ability to pause and resume TV viewing from one screen to another. BBC iPlayer will also introduce the ability to create personalised channels based on your preferences.

BBC Director-General, Tony Hall, says: "The new generation of BBC iPlayer is set to transform our relationship with audiences. In the coming years, for many people BBC iPlayer is going to be the front door to our programming and the experience they have is going to be a world away from that of a traditional 'one to many' broadcaster.

“It will be a relationship where we provide our audiences with what they want, when and how they want it. And crucially through enhanced interactivity, they will also be able to tell us what they think of these programmes and services too. That conversation excites me hugely as it means our audiences won't just receive the programmes we make, they will contribute to how we make them as well."

Ralph Rivera, Director of BBC Future Media, says: “BBC iPlayer is one of the BBC’s greatest inventions and one of the UK’s favourite brands. We plan to revolutionise iPlayer from a service primarily used to catch up on BBC TV to an entertainment destination for all – wherever you are. With innovative interactive features and a new design that helps you discover more hidden gems from the BBC, iPlayer will transform online TV for audiences now and in the future.”

Danny Cohen, Director of BBC Television, says: “From new programming exclusive to BBC iPlayer, to new online and pop-up channels around special interests or major events, BBC iPlayer will be bursting with more content than ever. We want to allow viewers to make the choices about what they watch and when. Over time, more and more of our programmes will be available to watch on BBC iPlayer before they are broadcast on TV, allowing viewers to create their own evening schedule. And, programmes will be available for longer – increasing the catch-up window from seven to 30 days. All this will make BBC iPlayer the ultimate destination for TV fans for years to come.”

It would be good if they had set times for when the updates/watch agains come out - for example, our 8 month old goes to bed around 8.

the Mrs. consequently always misses Great British Bakeoff.

Sometimes, it goes up on iPlayer less than 5 minutes after the episode.
The other day it must have been several hours, in fact the following day.

I've no problem with either time, but just be consistent so we know where we are please Auntie...
get thee to the library before the c*nts close it down
