Bet one of you can help me....

I need to find the four home international captains who all played in a merseyside derby -- the same match -- in the 1970s...?

Homesick - not sure if this is the right answer. I've got an old copy of the Official Liverpool FC Magazine here - one feature is "On the Ball Challenge" with Dave Ball.

His answer:  Dave is certain Emlyn Hughes and Bruce Rioch captained England and Scotland respectively and whilst citing Joey Jones (Wales) and Bryan Hamilton (Noretherin Ireland) in the 1977 FA Cup semi-final replay when theyall played together, he's not sure if they were current captains of their countries.

Are you allowed more than one try?

I meant Northern Ireland of course - apologies!

Best wait for people like Mottman, stoz or Rushian perhaps to answer?

Brill Cyn, thanks.  Dave Ball was a mate of mine in my BBC Radio Merseyside days.  I will give it a go.  I will reply if you are right.

Oh dear :(

Well, next time if you meet Dave Ball, you can tell him the correct answer, Homesick!

I read the answers a few days ago and remember that question being asked when I was a kid. But something was bugging me about the answers given.

If I had to guess I would have said the first ones were right......Hughes, Jones, Rioch and Hamilton. Something didn't seem right about the second set of answers and I think I know what it was.

Firstly, it strikes me as odd that Toshack and Dalglish, two forwards would have been captains. Usually it's defenders and midfielders. Wasn't Don Masson the Scotland captain at the time?

Secondly, if they all appeared in the same Merseyside derby, then it would have had to been the 1977/78 season (in other words May 1978 for the Home Internationals) at the earliest as Kenny only moved in the summer of 1977.

Thirdly, I was under the impression that Tosh got injured before the EC final of 1977 and didn't get back into the team and was released the next season and he went to Swansea. I was only a kid at the time but I don't remember Tosh and Kenny playing together at all.  ???

Can any older fans confirm this or am I just waffling?

Toshack and Kenny did play together on threee occasions during the 77-78 season. One of those games was actually against Everton, 22/10/77. Toshack's third to last game for Liverpool.

Can't confirm details of Everton line-up at the moment but will try to soon.

Sounds like Hughes and Hamilton are certanties. Plus either Dalglish or Rioch for Scotland and either Jones or Toshaack for Wales. Jones, Toahack and Dalglish all played in that league game
