Patriots take a Running Back in the draft.  I am a bit surprised, but I shouldn't be because I was consistently saying that Dillon is becoming less effective and looks old (even though he is only 31).

I thought they would be going for a LB though.  A WR should also be on the agenda.

NYAmericanRed: thanks for the draft pick, so we could pick up Santonio Holmes.

P.S. Why the heck did you guys pick yet another defensive lineman? Seems like you have multiple holes to fill.

Jets fans, congrats on two smart selections, Ferguson and Mangold. You should be especially happy with Mr. Mangold. He's a horse, and should help hold off the demons who try to zero in on your QB

Pardon me butting in but one reason they may have selected a DE is that Strahan will be 35 this year. The analyst on ESPN seems to think this guy is a reach but who knows.

Accorsi said he was our highest rated of the players we were still after when we made the trade with Pittsburgh.

From what Accorsi said it would seem plan is to use him in rotation and on passing downs at first, as you say Strahan isn't getting any younger

Happy with our picks.....D'Brick and Mangold were desperately needed. Great to see Mangold was still available at 29. Don't know the reasoning behind letting go the 35th, though.

The Bills have had the worst draft by far. They will suck next season.

Mel Kiper?  He said Osi Umenyiora was a huge reach, and look how he turned out.  The LAST person to EVER listen to when projecting how a college player will turn out is Kiper, because he almost NEVER watches the NFL.

Although I'm not thrilled with the pick, they're drafting two years ahead.

I love the Sinorice Moss pick in round 2...he's a deep threat we sorely need.  As good as Shockey and Burress are, neither one is especially fast, and Sinorice is incredibly fast.

Hey, at least Kiper owned up to it! He knows his business though evaluating talent because he's had that gig for nearly 20 years. In many ways the draft is a crapshoot and there's nothing better than seeing players reaching stardom who apparently fooled all the so called experts, ie Joe Montana, Tom Brady, Marino, etc.

Was everyone happy with their team's picks?

Very happy with the Jets draft.....we are rebuilding though and I think we'll be in a good draft position again next year unfortunately. We did get a 2nd rounder from the Skins for next year for basically free.

Got a franchise LT in Brick
Centre to replace Mawae in Mangold
Future franchise QB in Clemmens
+ 2 defensive players who will fit well into our scheme and are excellent against the run.

We've done very well.....first draft for the new FO and they've pulled the right moves.

Very happy we didn't trade up for Reggie, and it's great that city has a hero after its recent history.

How'd everyone else see the draft for their team?

As a Bears fan i'm a bit annoyed at Angelo for the picks. He trades away the no 26 even after Cinci don;t take Mercedes Lewis, He then takes Manning and Hester - WE NEED OFFENCE! Still no tight end, still no leonard Pope. Third round comes and Arizona takes Pope with the pick before us and we pass on TE again and go T.

I know defence wins playoffs but we will have a wining record from just playing in our division let alone anyone else. Grossman/Griese needs some weapons and i just hope that Bradley/Berrian have breakout years now.

Looking to the second day i want us to consider: DARNELL BING, KO SIMPSON, MAX JEAN-GILLES, DEMETRIUS WILLIAMS, TIM DAY. (oh and possibly a developmental pick on Penn State QB/WR MICHAELROBINSON)

I think those teams with the best drafts are: Jets, Broncos, Eagles and Patriots (Maroney & Jackson)

Fins fan here :wave

Not overly impressed with the Allen selection, if he can overcome his injury background then there's a chance he'll be ok, but NFL Network were calling it the Bo Jackson hip syndrome  :( .
As for Hagan (WR) his reports suggest he's a possesion receiver & not a game opening speedster, but given the Fins traded for Culpepper you'd have thought they'd look for a game breaker to compliment his passing arm a la the Vikes with DC & Randy Moss.

As a Steeler fan, I have to admit I was extremely excited about our #1 pick, Santonio Holmes. He will more than adequately fill the Randle El role, as slot receiver/kick return specialist. What I didn't understand was the deal with the Vikes to get their 2 3rd rounders for our 2nd.
When evaluating the two trades together (inc. one for Holmes), and throw out the 3rd round pick given up for the one we got back (since they were the same pick, essentially: 95 vs. 96), we got #25 and #83 for #32, #64 and #129. Seems like a bit much. Then they got a guy (Anthony Smith, S) who had only one good year at Syracuse, then picked up another slot guy in Willie Reid from Florida St. No OT, no DT, no RBs.
Overall, happy with Holmes, but the rest... ehhh. Colon and Harris (4th rounders) could surprise, as could Jacobs (QB?!) in the 5th, but this may end up being an overall forgettable year.

ONE FAN LOOKS BACK AT THE LAST TWO DAYS
I like what the Titans did in this draft, getting Young and White. And the Cards lucked out, with Leinart falling into their laps. The Saints were smart not to deal the #2 pick, and so they get a top grade just for drafting Reggie Bush. I also LOVE the Jets' picks (Ferguson and Mangold will anchor that O line for a decade or more).
Idiots? WTF were the Texans thinking in drafting Mario Williams first? The Bills took Whitner, even though NO ONE rated him Top 10 BTD. The Raiders were idiots for passing on Leinart. And daddymac, I agree that the Bears did themselves few favors concentrating on D, when they had so many needs on O.
But that's just me...

Update: broken jaw, broken nose, multiple facial fractures, lost/chipped most of his teeth, deep 9" long laceration on back of head, severe bruising on both knees (scrapped up when he rolled off car and flew onto road behind car he hit). Going 40 MPH, distracted by "someone" on sidewalk, entered intersection without yielding, hit car, bounced off windshield, rolled over top of car and landed hard on road behind car. Lucky the bastard wasn't killed.

Personally, I feel sorry for him.  Plus I have a  lot of respect for this kid.  This is bound to open a lot of debate about athletes' off-field behaviour again.   I keep myself out of these debates as much as I can, as it is not up to me to judge how athletes should spend their money and time.

What is the likelihood of him playing agin before Christmas?  I am guessing his jaw is wired right now. Do the Steelers have a decent QB on their roster?

Plus an update on Ben.

Steelers turn back the hands of time

By Pat Kirwan
NFL.com Senior Analyst

LATROBE, PA. (Aug. 3, 2006) -- I have seen high school football teams board beautiful coach buses to head out for a game. I have been part of college teams that take big air-conditioned buses twenty miles to play the closest rivals, and a pro team wouldn't think of going five miles with out the most comfortable buses available -- unless you are the world champion Pittsburgh Steelers.

On Wednesday night in Latrobe, Pa. with 14,000 fans filling a high school field stadium, the Steelers showed up in four yellow school buses for a live intrasquad practice and goal-line scrimmage.

As I stood in the bleachers and watched the buses pull up next to an old steel mill and the players get off with their shoulder pads in hand, I got goose bumps. I was living a dream. For one night, Mr. Rooney and Bill Cowher turned back the hands of time for me and the Steelers fans. I was allowed to take a peak at how it used to be -- and it was awesome.

It looked like the origins of pro football, a steel town playing another steel town at the local stadium. As the players mingled with their fans, signed autographs and took pictures, Mr. Rooney presented one of the game balls from the Super Bowl to the mayor of the town. In that moment, I finally understood why the Steelers are just different from most teams. There's no way the Steelers players could let these people down, and there's no way the fans could ever turn on the team when times get tough.

There was a 4-year-old boy sitting behind me with his mother, and he turned to her in his Jerome Bettis jersey and told her, "I'm glad to see coach letting Santonio Holmes catch some punts." He's too young to understand that much football. At least, I thought a child that young didn't get the game yet, but he and his mom where there to watch some ball.

The Steelers fans love football! The high school football team in their game jerseys acted as a kind of security team to help the players get from the buses to the field, but they really weren't needed, because the fans didn't charge the players or scream and yell, they just wanted to be up close to their beloved Steelers for some football under the lights.

With Jerome Bettis retired, Hines Ward is the emotional leader of the world champions. As he took the field, my Sirius Radio partner, Tim Ryan, noticed he had something taped to his helmet. None of the other players had anything taped to their helmets, not even the rookies. It looked like a name tag like most high school football players would wear when they go to summer camp. Tim went down to the field to find out what it said, and when he came back, I got those goose bumps once again. It said "Hines Ward," and when Tim asked him why the name tag, he said, "It's a new year, and I'm not taking it off until I make the team." Can you imagine what those young high school football players at the scrimmage learned from watching the best team in the world? I can: Humility. Take nothing for granted and go to work.

I went up into the high school press box for a minute and there was the voice of the Steelers, in a 100-degree heat, giving every single fan in the stands the feeling they were at Heinz Field for a big game. No air conditioning, no fans to keep the booth cool, just a guy exciting the fans with his call of the practice.

Joey Porter isn't ready to practice, but he did get in a workout at the field by running a few laps and showing the Steelers fans he will be ready for the season opener against the Dolphins on September 7. Speaking of showing the fans he is also ready, "Big" Ben Roethlisberger dropped back to throw against a good Steelers rush, slide to his left to avoid the rush, and hit Hines Ward with a beautiful throw at the sideline for a first down. It looked like Ward has a good chance to make the team after that catch!

I really never understood why every single person in Pittsburgh wears Steelers clothes everywhere they go. But after my night watching Mr. Rooney turn back the hands of time for three hours, I finally get it.

When I get to the Steelers training facility in the morning, I have been invited to watch the tapes of the scrimmage, sit down with Bill Cowher on my Sirius Radio show, and hopefully will get to shake Mr. Rooney's hand for an experience every football person needs to have in his lifetime.

That's a nice article about the Steelers. And love the fact that a high school can seat 14,000. We'd have been lucky if an rabid stray dog found it's way onto our secondary school's football (soccer) field, and even then it would have had to sit on a patchy bit of grass.

Junior Seau has retired, thanks for all the good years fella!

Seau powers down after electrifying career
By Adam Schefter
NFL Analyst

(Aug. 14, 2006) -- Similar to the lightning bolt that symbolized his former franchise, Junior Seau would come out of nowhere and strike everywhere.

He ran from one sideline to another, hunting down running backs and wide receivers and tight ends and anyone who intruded on -- or actually into -- his territory.

Junior Seau grew up in the San Diego area and left his mark on the field and in the community.
His territory was everywhere. And once he captured his hunted, Seau would perform his patented Lightning Bolt dance, a tribute to his own play and to the lightning bolt on the side of the Chargers helmet.

Now his career, his great career, is over. But to watch him Sunday after Sunday was like watching a Tasmanian Devil, which was the nickname his former teammates slapped on him. Anybody who focused solely on Seau would see a player whose energy was more endless than his Pro Bowl streak. While with San Diego, Seau played in 12 consecutive Pro Bowls. He led the Chargers in tackles in almost every one of those seasons.

With matching enthusiasm and passion, Seau became the face of the franchise, which is not easy for a linebacker to do. Outside of Ray Lewis in Baltimore and Brian Urlacher in Chicago, there isn't another linebacker in the league who is thought of as synonymous with his franchise. For all his years in San Diego, for helping lead the team out of the bottom of the AFC West and to the 1994 AFC title, Seau was.

He was synonymous with San Diego, just as he was synonymous with great plays and a distinctive name. His name -- Say-Ow! -- was befitting of the punishing tackles he often doled out, which also became the name of a clothing line that Seau created.

Yet in this day and age of the salary cap, fewer and fewer veterans get to finish their careers with the teams in which they started them.

Seau was no different. After 13 seasons in San Diego, Seau moved on to Miami, which was a little bit like watching Joe Namath finish his career in Los Angeles or Franco Harris finishing his in Seattle.

Legends of the game are supposed to stay where they made their name.

But the name Seau made for himself will always allow him to stay in Canton.

They might do well this year. Reggie Bush looks to be legit and having seen a lot of Drew Brees I think that the Saints have picked up a quality QB. He's not the flashiest player and doesn't have as much of a gun as a lot of NFL QB's but is a very smart and efficient passer. As long as they keep their players away from the mascots they should do alright;

Saints QB recovering from mascot mishap

NFL.com wire reports

JACKSON, Miss. (Aug. 14, 2006) -- Shortly after the New Orleans Saints gathered for practice, reserve quarterback Adrian McPherson limped over to an exercise bike, climbed aboard and started pedaling toward another comeback.

McPherson was run over by Titans mascot T-Rac during second-half warmups of the New Orleans-Tennessee game Aug. 12. He said he never saw the golf cart coming as he prepared to catch a punt.

The second-year player had one MRI and is planning a second one to confirm the painful injury is no worse than a severe bruise of his right knee.

McPherson is perhaps best known as the quarterback kicked off the Florida State football team for gambling. He served a stint in the Arena Football League before the Saints took a chance on him in the 2005 draft.

He said Aug. 14 he's worked hard to make it to the NFL and the accident was a setback. He has been returning kickoffs and punts to add value to his bid to make the team as the third quarterback.

"I'm just a little disappointed because I worked so hard this season," McPherson said. "I know it was an accident, but something like that should never happen."

Tennessee coach Jeff Fisher and Saints coach Sean Payton discussed the accident Aug. 14. But Fisher said he wanted to keep the conversation private and Payton was not available for comment after his morning news conference. GMs Mickey Loomis of the Saints and Floyd Reese of the Titans also have discussed the accident.

T-Rac uses a variety of motorized vehicles in his routines. The mascot was leaving the field after the halftime show when he hit McPherson.

Payton said encroachment on the field was a problem before the game, as well. A photographer stepped into the way of receivers running routes, something that also could have led to injury.

"Those are the things that concern you sometimes when it comes to the field of play," Payton said. "The field of play is the field of play, even when you're warming up. You've just got to make sure you keep those areas safe."

Alright folks. I setup something over at Yahoo!

The league name is RAWK Fantasy Football.
League ID: 485718
The password is: redmen

We've got a standard head-to-head league with standard scoring.

Right now a Live Draft is set for Sunday, August 27, at 1pm EST (East coast American time). That time, and the type of draft can be changed (just let me know any preferences or problems).

Anyone is free to join, as long as you don't mind losing. :D

I would be but my knowledge is limited. Can I pick Dan Marino and William Perry?
