Chrissie Kirkland
« on: February 27, 2002, 11:12:21 am »
Watched the whole match last night, and yet again Kirkland made some amazing saves.

He's young, and doesn't have Dudek's experience or composure (what 20-year-old keeper would?). His kicking is poor, but he's great on crosses and is an amazing shot stopper, and let's face it, I'd rather have a keeper who can do everything bar kick, than a keeper who can only kick but can't catch a ball (and he can work on his kicking - it seems to be a bit of nerves, which is understandable). Against Grimsby he conceded a perfect 35 yarder into the top corner, and against Everton and Gala he conceded goals put with sheer precision (flukily on the bearded dwarf's part at the weeked) into the bottom corner.

Whenever I've seen him (inclusing twice for Coventry vs LFC, twice for the England U21s) he's been nothing short of superb. Another top, top signing by GH, but then we'd expect no less.

Maybes we can get a scientist to clone all the top parts of Jerzy and Chrisse and make a super Clem ;D

Seriously though, Chris is a superb goaly who can only get better with age and experience.

Brilliant prospect. I hope we can keep him happy with limited appearances,  but he is a red at heart , so that should help. He's gonna be Englands No.1 .

In four years' time, Jerzy will be 32 and in his prime - at the peak age for a goalie. But CK will be 24, and probably getting itchy feet if he's not a first choice.

Do you:

a) keep Jerzy in goal and risk losing CK

b) loan CK out for a year at a time, but then lose his quality as a back up until the loan expires

c) make Jerzy second choice, which he won't be happy with if he's still performing

d) sell Jerzy and make CK number one - on the assumption that CK has another decade at the top, whereas Jerzy will soon be passing his peak

???

Tough choice. I'd like us to keep both. But if they are equally good and one has to go in 4 years time, then... Dudek is the one to go. c) or d) it is.

I'm kind of hoping that Dudek will take the role of being the backup goalie in the future. I'd love to have him as the no 2, or no 3, when/if CK becomes our no 1 keeper.

if young Chris keep the improvement and form, there's no beating. I'll keep him and he can be our goalie for the following ten years!

And I can't see Jerzy would stay under such circumstances, unfortunately.

good keepers are very hard to come by, we have certainly had our fair share of bad ones, that is why we have to keep kirkland he is young and has years to go. finding a keeper of his potential and age is very unlikey. but it is going to be hard to keep them both. i just hope they can both stay happy. if they both stay wedon't have too much to worry about the no. 1 shirt for the next 15 years!

I think we should play Jari Litmanen in goal.

He may not be as defensively minded as Jerzy or Chris but he plays football the way it is meant to be played and his close control is awesome. We really need somone at the back to pull the strings and take us onto the next level as a team.

His clearances from the penalty area would also allow us to exploit the pace of Owen and the strength of Heskey. If we conceded goals it would only be because Sami and Stephane are not as intelligent as Litti and can't keep up with the speed of his footballing brain.

The reason he hasn't been picked before for this position is obviously down to some personal vendetta by Thommo and/or Houllier to frustrate and ruin his career.

It really annoys me to have genius like Litti's warming the bench while we have two "honest workhorses" like Dudek and Kirkland monopolising the No.1 shirt.

We can't lose Jerzy Dudek.  He is proven quality.  If, for some reason, we had to lose one I'd want to keep Dudek.  But there's no need for that just yet.

On the funny pills again Shaky?
Nice one...  ;D

There's some tough choices in there Paul but sadly I think it'll all depend on CK's development. He has the potential to become England's number one although I doubt he'll be able to do it without first team football.

If he's determined he'll either break into our first team or leave. Result: Dudek either becomes number two keeper or remains with a new understudy.

If he's not set on that England role then he'll settle for number two spot here and Dudek will be king as long as he stays fit and in form.

Fitness and form can of course change any of the above.

What a load of waffle.
I'll get me coat.

Football is a simple game based on the giving and taking of passes, of controlling the ball and of making yourself available to receive a pass. It is terribly simple - Bill Shankly.

Either way, we'll have a top keeper. The point I was making was simply that there will be a point in the future when a very tough decision may have to be made - but GH has never shied away from those!

Yeah, he's great ! I've seen him play a few times this season (on TV) with LFC and the England -21's and he looks very capable. But I still think he should have kept out that Gala goal.

That's harsh! It was a well-positioned header that from behind the goal is clearly seen to graze the post. The header came in quickly, and if anyone was to blame it was Sami for allowing the attacker to get across him, but even that's a bit harsh...

It will be a tough decision to make at that point. BUT Chris signed a 6 year deal while Jerzy only signed a 5(I think)  So we have him till 2007 atleast.  By then Jerzy will be 34/35 so mayb Chris will already be getting his chance by then.

Song for Chris

To the tune of "In My Liverpool Home"

We've got Kirkland in goal
When we're missing our Pole
One comes in on target he flies through the air
In comes a cross and he'll be standing there
If only his kicking was better than fair  ;)
We've got Kirkland in goal!
