4th choice try 6th choice as Virgil, Gomez, Matip, Fab and the young lad Williams got the nod for CL before him. He was probably 7th choice last season when Lovren was still here. He must be living the dream as probably thought he might and thats a big might get a run out in the odd cup game.
He wasn't registered in the CL squad because we thought he was leaving. It's the only reason, Klopp said it and sounded disappointed that we'd messed that up

He's taking his chance well.  Showing he belongs in the team with all of our injuries.  I expect Edwards to get 20M for him in the summer. ;D

Edwards opening line could be (assuming he doesn't play on losing side) - "undefeated CB for Prem League winners. not even VVD can get in the team!"

I think Nat could be in line for a game tomorrow, but I know very little about Fulham and their forward line but it seems like this could perhaps be a game we see Fabinho back in midfield and Nat alongside Matip in defence.

Only 45 minutes but didn’t put a foot wrong
If he's being asked to head the ball too frequently - which isn't exactly his specialty - it could affect his ear and cause an infection. Especially if the ball hits him on the ear directly.

I feel more confident with him at the back that Williams. Neither pacey but he has the experience and heading ability, probably more vocal too

Agreed, but I think Williams has the higher ceiling.

I think this is true but also don’t think it’s the time for us to be worrying about Rhys’ career development.

Phillips is a calm and assured presence and very strong in the air. Williams may go on to be the better player but I’d undoubtedly choose Phillips over him. He was great tonight.

The midfield doesn’t seem panicked about covering for him. We can maintain our balance with him in the side.

He's a good player damned with a lot faint praise, is my impression. Hasn't got the pace to play for us long term, but other than that he looks quality.

He's our 7th choice CB behind VVD, Gomez, Matip, Fabinho, Williams and Henderson and it showed. It's just where we are right now and where we are going to be for the foreseeable future.

Luckily the majority of spurs attack petered out in the 2nd half and he got much more support from Trent and the midfielders in front of him.

Looks far more experienced and loves to challenge in the air. Don’t understand why he hasn’t started more than Williams, lacks pace just like him but his anticipating is miles better.

There was no 'luckily' about it, they didn't even have half-chances, and Phillips contributed to that.

If he was 15 years older, he'd have 300 LFC appearances to his name having been a 'solid, no nonsense' centre back.

Not what we're after right now and I was surprised he was chosen over Williams. But he did fine.

Let's be clear. Kane was off already in the 2nd half.
So no real test with Lamela.

I'll give him that header away from Son as a main contribution. But Spurs were awful with the ball as soon as Kane was off and they shuffled their midfield.

He is a Liverpool player so he will get all my support. Just the thought of going into the 2nd half of the season with Phillips, Rhys Williams, Fabinho (when fit) and Henderson as the only fit CB options doesn't fill me with confidence

I was worried after he got his early yellow card but he did much better after that. Made a couple of very good tackles and interceptions.

Let's not fool ourselves though - he's not the long-term answer to our problems in defence.

He's very commanding in the air, I'll give him that.

I fear his lack of mobility/pace would be found out pretty quickly if he were given a run.

I'm not writing Williams off because he's still so young, but I do feel more comfortable with Phillips.

Between the two, Phillips should be the preferred option over Williams. Older, more experienced, more physical and good in the air.

At the moment, with our current CB situation, we would more than welcome having Klavan available. Phillips is not quite Klavan but he will do for now especially if we are not bringing in any CB this window

That's more than Van Dijk did in plenty of games, and not the way evaluating the contribution of a central defender works.

I feel we sorely lack aerial dominance.  And Nat is the 1  CB (literally) available who can head the ball powerfully.

I feel we should cover for his lack of ability on the ball easier than the alternative of covering for Williams's lack of aerial dominance. Neither has pace anyway.
Its the correct tradeoff, short of a last min CB signing.

Agreed, but I think Williams has the higher ceiling.
Why?  Can’t say it’s because he’s quicker....because both are pretty slow.

For me Phillips seems more aggressive and more combative and that is what we need right now, without a doubt

Far worse on the ball than Rhys and to be honest they’re much of much ness because we can’t play a high line with either

Lack of pace is an issue but if it's a choice between Nat and Rhys right now, I'd pick Nat every time. Has that bit more experience. More vocal. Great in the air. Thought he did really well tonight second half.

I never understood why he wasn't ahead of Williams for the league games.

Glad sense has taken place now and he is ahead of Williams. I like Williams but Nat is top draw in the air and that alone puts him ahead of Williams for now.
