You’re right about the kodiak starting higher and I had contemplated some sort of hp for the rest. Odd that I’d be looking at the petrol which does 39mpg rather than the diesel at 60mpg+ but it’s the resale potential (or banning from certain areas) that bothers me. My work car is a diesel so wanted to try and diversify too. Thanks for car tips, will look into them.

We do have a diesel at the moment but it’s a 2011. From my very brief read I think there is better scrappage for older (pre 2009) cars. I’ll def check it out though.

Seems a strange time for buying cars which is probably part of the reason that numbers are falling.

I think the family car will do approx 10k a year so I’ll run the figures tonight on that. I know we’re all guessing on the future of diesels and I’d personally love an electric car but that seems 3yrs + away from mainstream.

Read a story the other day about whether an old banger (petrol) was cleaner or dirtier than a 2009 Passat diesel. the Passat came out tops on everything. What was a shock though was the Passat also battered a Euro 6 diesel, the emissions where massively lower. Think the report said its something to do with the makers "adjusting" the test cars for the Euro 6 tests. I drive an 09 2.2 Diesel X Type with DPF and it blows no black smoke at all.

If I have a car on pcp can I get shut of it earlier for a fee? Reason I ask I've an opportunity to work in Spain . But it would involve leaving whilst still in contract so to speak. I could in theory just pay the monthly instalments for three months and leave it on my sisters drive then come home and return it if it was cheaper.

Yes. Just phone the finance people and ask for a settlement quote then go get your car valued at wherever you want to sell it then it’s just a case of working out what’s best for yourself

After driving old beat up cars till they're dead for 30+ years I now need to decide whether to use the cash I'd normally buy another with or use it as a deposit and go lease hire on a new one.  My problem seems to be choice, there's just so damn many to choose from.

I don't need a big car as it's usually only me in it, occasionally the hubby and occasionally a grandchild but I do prefer a 5dr and I don't do much mileage, probably 5-6k per year.

My problem seems to be engine size.  I like quick off the mark, hot hatch types but don't have the budget for top of the range models, so my question is are the new, lower cc engines quicker than their older counterparts.

I guess I need to test drive a few and decide from there although I'm really liking the look of the new Peugeot 208!  Anyone driven one or got any feedback on them?

Brother in law has a 1.4 Seat Leon on a 15 plate - knocks out about 125 bhp. He reckons its nice and quick. The new FR has almost 150bhp and does 0-60 in under 8 secs. All the lower CC engines are all Turbos so they are all pretty quick.

I quite like the Leons too, especially the cupras if they still make them.  The 208 I'm looking at is the 1.2 GT which is only a 90bhp but does 0-60 in 9 seconds yet does 65mpg.

I have a 1.6 focus now which does 0-60 in a couple of minutes cos its missing and stuttering even though my mechanic says there's nowt showing on the management system and does my head in [emoji16].  I've followed home a focus RS a couple of times recently and totally fell in love till I found out they're £30k+.

Would you go new or get another 10yr old jobby n make do?  I just hate having finance on owt!!

The Leon with the 1.4 150bhp engine is presumably the same as the one in my A3.

Amazing...  on the motorway it’s like a 2 litre...  it’s quiet and it’s got plenty of grunt to overtake.

In country roads you can just about tell it’s a 1.4, but it revs nicely and is very responsive.

Because it’s got cylinder on demand, it shut off two of the cylinders when not needed.  I always get 40+ mpg on a stop start journey to work and 50+ on the motorway.

It’s ace.  Best of both worlds.

Personally I'd never go new, but thats just me. I got an 09 X Type Jag last January. Always wanted one and while I had 13k to spend, I didn't want to go that high and to be honest, newer cars do nothing for me. Missus turned down the offer of a brand new Astra two years ago from her Dad as her car, even though on an 06, has nothing wrong with it.

As Tepid says, the engine in the Leon is the same one from the A3.

Know what you mean about new v used but on lease hire the prices are virtually identical whilst the servicing and maintenance costs are more on used for obvious reasons.

My dad loved his jags, bit before your time but I remember the really bad winter of '63 and he had to abandon one in a snow drift on a single track country lane with me in tow.  He carried me home on his shoulders and when he went back for it next day one of the back quarterlight windows had broken and the car was full of snow [emoji23][emoji16]

Suppose it all depends on how long you keep a car for, are you a frequent swapper or do you keep them.  As the wife does low mileages, 5k max a year, we got her car at 11 months old for under £10k. Its got 60k on it now, its cost under £200 in repairs in that time and about £500 on tyres. Its worth nothing now but still going strong.

For example whats a Leon, £250-£300 a month on lease? There are 66 and 17 plate cars going for £13k, 6k off new. As I'm quite happy to won the same thing for years and can do all the servicing, when out of warranty, myself then I'd rather buy with a bank loan and run the car til it died, than spend £30 - 35k over 10 years on lease cars. Others prefer the peace of mind of having everything taken care of for them and enjoy getting a new car - horses for courses.

I usually keep them till they die so couple of years max but they're really old when I get them [emoji16] my current car is an 04 plate that I've had for 18mths but it's disintegrating underneath and won't get through another mot.

I could buy nearly new with a loan but I can see my vehicle needs changing over the next few years so I quite like the option of changing it easily.

Speaking of Seat's, does anyone know how to update their built in sat navs for free? Seat want £200 an update..

I've found the map files online, but apparently the sticking point is a "seat approved" SD card. I.E. one they've stuck some copyright protection onto.

Knock offs are available on ebay for £50, which tells me there's a way to create one yourself. Anyone done it before?

I got an sd card already in mine, it's well out of date though. If you've got the ability to link your android or Apple phone you'll be best off using the maps built into them.

Hi lads

Just a quick one. I recently purchased a 6 month old Q7 from a main Audi dealership. At the time of test drive/negotiations, the car was spotless. However the day I drove it off there was a small scratch the size of of a 50p coin on a door. I pointed it out to the salesman and he said bring it back in next week and he will sort it.
Due to family circumstances I could only pop in and see him 4/5 weeks after purchase. He then appeared to use some tcut on the scratch, but it still wouldn’t disappear. The size has been reduced to the size of a 20p coin.
Does anyone if the application of tcut could have harmed the paint (sepang blue pearl)? Also having paid so much money on a car, surely I’m due some form of compensation for having to make what is another inconvenient trip to the dealership? Advice would be appreciated.

T-cut is only for light scratches and does take some paint off the car. If it was a deep scratch they should have had it repaired properly.

What would you say is the best way to go about exerting some pressure on Audi?

I'd ask to speak to the dealership manager first and see what they say, they really should sort it for you. If I got no joy, I'd go to Audi themselves, Andrew Doyle seems to be the boss of Audi UK

The dealerships will be part of a chain.  You need to onact the head of that chain rather than Audi uk.

Ah right. I only ever had a problem once with a motorbike and I went straight to Kawasaki UK, contacted some director and got a load of out of warranty work done FOC

Porsche 911 996, early (pre 2000) cable throttle coupe, no sunroof. Amazing amount of car for the money and potential investment as I don't think they'll drop any further in value. They could quite easily climb and narrow the gap on the later 997 model.

I always hated the 996 because of those lights on the front that lost the true aesthetic of the 911.

996 gets touted as the best generation ever of the 911 by 911 enthusiasts,i guess that's when Porsche really pushed boundaries on the 911 to another level with the Mezger engine and GT2 and GT3 versions.

On another note my Uncle in the States is getting the new M5 in Spring,He's going to the factory in Munich to pick up and blast it on the Autobahn for a few days before shipping it stateside and has plans to drive it  back home across the USA to California.

Just ordered a new 520d, had a choice of A6 or A4 s line but the decent reviews for the new 5 series swung it.

Maybe like normal people i should have gone for a test drive  :lmao

Nice. Massive car though. One parks next to me at work, it doesn't fit in the parking space.

Any Audi A3 (2006-2010) fans in? Are they reliable / economical? (asking for a mate)
It's true to say that if Shankly had told us to invade Poland we'd be queuing up 10 deep all the way from Anfield to the Pier Head.

To think the shape of the headlights and the fact that it was the first water cooled Porsche flat 6 911 have driven a price gap of 10k is absolutely ridiculous. The 996 and Boxster saved Porsche from extinction as the aircooled engine was dead in terms of meeting emissions laws.

The 996 is pretty much better in every way from its predecessors except the turbos and are probably the best super car you can get for the money in terms of performance, style and everyday practicality.
