Topic: Opening Car Doors

I got into a lively discussion with someone recently about opening the car door for them.

In my case I'm a bloke and it was the lady that prompted the discussion.

So the question is, if you drive up somewhere on just a regular day, at the supermarket or just getting home, do you hop out of the car, walk all the way round the car and the open the door for your partner

This particular lady absolutely had a go at me for not even thinking about it. For myself I would never even think about walking all the way round the car just to open a car door (unless it was an absolute special occasion). If we arrive at a regular door at the same time I will open the door, but I just feel the car door is a touch too much.

Can't say I've got out the car and ran round the other side top open the door for someone - then again I've never had the sort of woman in the car with me who'd actually sit there and wait rather than opening it herself. Then again if they did try that on it's likely I'd leave them waiting.

Open it when I've been by their side when getting in the car I think, but it's not something I'll do for any reason or regularity though.

I don't think i've done it, I've opened the door from the inside to let them in before, but haven't walked around the car to open the door. I've pulled out chairs for my significant other though.

No I let her open her own door, although I would run around and open it if it was a special occasion. I do open her door if we are walking to the car and we are on the passenger side. I probably should open it more, only because she is a heavy handed fucker and doesn't half slam it when she shuts it.

So I'm single and doing the online dating thing.

She on the surface is nice, educated lady who has a real job, 50 years old with 3 great kids.

About the third date and things are already a bit strained. We pull up at a supermarket to get a bottle of wine before going back to mine for a no drama TV movie. She was driving and I jump out and wander out towards the store but she is not following. She is in her seat looking down. I assume she is tapping out a text or something and I give her the privacy before waiting for her to get out.

Then she gets out and says 'I waited in that car and I was able to count to 12 before I opened the door. You just don't even think about it do you ... You just don't even think to open the car door. All of my ex boyfriends and husbands have always opened the door for me'. This diatribe was delivered with an angry tone.

We were wandering then towards the wine section in the store and I just didn't see the point anymore. Binned her off, or more politely said, this is pointless and that was that right there.

My friends said if she is berating you after three dates for something utterly unreasonable then who knows what would lie ahead.

there were some indications in the previous dates that she expected a high standard of manners but what she said was 100% correct. It simply would never enter my head that a physically active uninjured lady would EXPECT me to open the door. I'm all for a good set of manners in each direction from both genders, but this was just fucking nutso.

Yes, use the other arm so it forces your head back to check. Seems like a good idea. When I'm on the bike I am terrified of people opening their car doors on me.

It was last Wednesday after the Champions League game which I watched at home. I asked her to pick me up as I had a few beers watching the game.

I told her I would get one of my mates to drive me home and she could just leave. She was nice enough to at least drive me home which was easier for me. Then she left.

I'm slightly reassured that the consensus is no one opens a door for anyone else unless there is a reason to do so.
