A cracking piece on Mauritania, who play Mali tonight, in their first ever AFCON game...

'Mauritania rise from fourth worst team in world to Africa’s grand stage':-

In 2012 only Bhutan, San Marino and the Turks & Caicos Islands were ranked below the desert nation but a football revolution has delivered an Africa Cup of Nations debut

Cote d'Ivoire vs South Africa starts in 10 minutes, arguably the first big game of the tournament with the new Ivorian stars like Pepe eager to shine on the international scene for the first time, this game is in Group D.

Tunisia vs Angola is afterwards followed by Mali vs Mauritania, both in Group E.

Ivorians win 1-0, Tunisia v Angola Starts in 15 minutes. In other news Cameroon will begin their 2019 Africa Cup of Nations campaign without Portuguese-based striker, Joel Tagueu who has been diagnosed with a heart defective problem that could lead to his death from the workload of playing professionally.

Ivorians win 1-0

Pepe was a threat every time he was on the ball (although that didn't happen often enough). Quick feet, good balance, gliding past players when dribbling, some good runs in behind that deserved a pass. He hit the bar with a freekick in the first half and the keeper pulled off a great save from another freekick at the end of the second.

Very promising player.

It is a great curse of ancient and powerful origin to have a banana yaya. It is known.

Aren't Ghana supposed to be among the favourites for this? I have to say their defence is a little bit unstable at times, they will have to improve further in that department.

The sending off was very unlucky but I have to say Benin have played really well tonight. Ghana have been vulnerable at the back all game.

Mark Bright's waffling aside, it's been okay the coverage on Eurosport. So nice to hear commentators concentrating on the football rather than following agendas.

We know what his finishing is like, but last game he played entirely on the wing it was noticeable he'd been told to stay there by the manager.
