2019 Africa Cup of Nations
« on: June 21, 2019, 04:05:54 pm »

Tournament starts today with Egypt vs Zimbabwe. Zimbabwe's players refused to train and threatened to boycott the tournament over unpaid wages withheld by their FA, only for their ambassador in Egypt to pay them out of his pocket to avoid embarrassment.

This is going to be the first tournament with 24 teams. Also the first one held in the summer months, a move that definitely pleased a lot of fans (Liverpool fans included) as African players will no longer miss any regular league games in the middle of the European season.

Anyway, here is a picture of the Groups below:

And the full schedule too:

With the tournament being held in Egypt, they have suddenly became one of the favorites to win, the Pharaohs have won it a record seven times before. Senegal, Morocco and Algeria are the other teams tipped by the bookies to go all the way with Ghana, Nigeria and Tunisia considered outside bets. DR Congo, Guinea and Mali are your bets for a dark horse.

Tonights match in doubt between Egypt and Zimbabwe.

The Zimbabweans could protest the tournament's opening game over a pay row.

The 2019 Africa Cup of Nations is scheduled to commence today on Friday. However, the tournament's kick-off is now under heavy doubt due to a pay row between the Zimbabwe players and the federation.

The Warriors' showdown with hosts Egypt now faces uncertainty as the squad is yet to be paid. Members of the national team confirmed to the AP that a meeting had been held to resolve this matter but they failed at reaching an agreement.

The players boycotted the final training session before Friday's game and could extend their protest to the opening game should Zimbabwe fail to pay them their allowance for this tournament and match fees owed from last month.

The nation's football federation moved to calm down fears, stating that the Cairo encounter will not be boycotted. However, some players have asked to be released in order to return home.

The Cameroonians are at loggerheads with their FA over a similar reason, as the reigning champions refused to board their flight on Thursday over a pay dispute. The Indomitable Lions are expected to make their way to Egypt later today after an agreement was reached. They kick-off their title defense on Tuesday against Guinea-Bissau.

Should the Zimbabweans protest the opening game, it would be an embarrassment for AFCON, CAF, and the continent as a whole. Corruption continues to plague several football federations in Africa, including CAF, and a boycott would be another stain.
Either we are a club of supporters or become a club of customers.

I hope the pair of them do really well and come back full of confidence.

The final is on July 19, that's three weeks before our first Premier League game of the season. They'll get at least three weeks off, and by the time they've had a quick pre-season, they'll have missed (at least) our first four games - Community Shield, Supercup and two league games. I'm with deFacto, the sooner they're out the better. Unfortunately, I'm afraid both Egypt and Senegal will go far, Keita is the only one likely to return sooner.

Also, while I know it suits us, it's absolute madness to play this in Egypt in the summer. Mo will be fine as Egypt will be playing late in the evening, but it wouldn't surprise me to see players collapsing in the afternoon heat. Hope I'm wrong, obviously.

Agree Jill, this isn’t ideal but it’s better than losing them all for a month in January. We can hopeful deal with them coming back a bit late and being eased back in to the side.

Mbappe and Dembele should be able to hold the fort til they get back!

So remind me what happened when the Africa's Cup was in January? That's right the big clubs moaned about it and so they changed it, yet here some people are moaning about having it now. I actually agree it seems more risky for the players to be playing now in this heat. But what is the solution otherwise? The African players want to play for their countries as much as anyone else but we know the clubs from the big leagues will always win out. It's not an easy problem to sort out one way or another.

I'm not moaning, and I did say "I know it suits us", I'm just concerned for the players' well-being. Of course the big clubs had to get their way, and I wouldn't want to have it in January, but there's a number of things they could have done more sensibly, such as:

1) organise the first summer tournament in South Africa (or in another southern hemisphere country), rather than in one of the hottest countries on the continent
2) keep it at 16 teams and play a maximum of two games a day, at 20h and 22h
3) kick off a week earlier, like Copa America

Anyway, I hope it all goes well, but even if there aren't any major health scares, it won't mean it was a good idea.

All games start no earlier than 5:30 PM. Not a problem really.

The article said 4:30 PM local time, with temperatures up to 40C. I'd call that a problem.

I am assuming they solved the issues concerning the Zimbabwe players.

I did not imply that you were moaning, and I would agree with most of the above as well.

Pity the Egyptian finishing has been so poor

Lovely pass from Salah, but Trezeguet's first touch was awful.
