Batistuta sorry for starting scuffle
Thursday 14th March 2002
Roma forward Gabriel Batistuta has apologised for striking Galatasaray's Emre Asik at the start of a mass brawl between the two sides following Wednesday night's draw. "I set a bad example and I'm sorry," he said.
TV cameras showed Batistuta react when Emre offered his hand to shake at the end of a niggly game which finished 1-1. The Argentina forward palmed his opponent away in a move that ignited a series of scuffles in a melee near the tunnel. Blows were traded as police tried to restore order.
After the incident Batistuta admitted that he was out of order. "I'm sorry about that," he said. "They insulted us during the match and they fouled us repeatedly, so I was really tense at the end. I'm sorry also because I set a bad example by reacting that way."
Roma midfielder Francisco Lima could be seen swinging punches as stewards attempted to restrain him. Galatasaray coaching staff seemed to provoke Lima, while one unidentified player with the Istanbul club was seen jostling stewards.
Much of the Galatasaray bench seemed to be involved in the incidents, but coach Mircea Lucescu could be seen furiously remonstrating with his own staff and in one case manhandling an assistant towards the tunnel.
When the situation calmed down, several GS players needed treatment for injuries. One appeared to have been hit by a missile thrown from the stand.
Roma coach Fabio Capello could not shed any more light on the incident. "I really don't know how the scuffle started," he said.
"I just tried to keep my players as far as possible from the fight. After such a difficult match all the players were really nervous.
"Do I think the referee made the situation worse by leaving some rugged fouls by the Turkish players unpunished? It's possible, but I don't like to complain too much about that. Now we have to think about the match in Liverpool."
His opposite number Mircea Lucescu said: "It's not nice to see this kind of thing. The players were edgy after the match. Anyway, we played a good match against a great team and we deserved the draw."
Umit Karan had put the Turks in front just before the break with a shot through centre-back Walter Samuel's legs after sloppy defending, but full-back Cafu lobbed home to level on 50 minutes.
ROUND-UP Roma and GS in post-match punch-up
Wednesday 13th March 2002
Riot police waded in to separate Roma and Galatasaray staff and players as they clashed violently at the end of Wednesday's draw.
On a night of four Champions' League stalemates, half the goals came in the Stadio Olimpico, where Roma came from behind to hold GS in a niggly match.
Umit Karan put the Turks in front just before the break with a shot through centre-back Walter Samuel's legs after sloppy defending, but full-back Cafu lobbed home to level on 50 minutes.
The real action came after the final whistle, though, as players joined a melee near the tunnel. Blows were traded as police tried to restore order.
Roma midfielder Francisco Lima could be seen swinging punches as stewards attempted to restrain him. Galatasaray coaching staff seemed to provoke Lima, while one unidentified player with the Istanbul club was seen jostling stewards.
Roma boss Fabio Capello then appeared to grab GS goalkeeping coach Eser Ozaltindere by the hair. Much of the Galatasaray bench seemed to be involved in the incidents, but coach Mircea Lucescu could be seen furiously remonstrating with his own staff and in one case manhandling an assistant towards the tunnel.
