Adrian Mutu!

How so? Was brilliant with Parma and has a goal every 2 games for Fiorentina and a pretty great scoring record for his NT

Would Anelka be covered here?  Lots of clubs, has he really been a world beater at them?  Even at Chelsea, he doesn't score loads compared to Drogba.

Good shout although he was dynamite at Arsenal

Alan Smith?

Smith is a bizarre one isn’t he? Burst onto the scene like a natural goalscorer – didn’t he score on his debut against us? I thought he was going to be another Robbie Fowler. To go from that to being reincarnated as a midfielder who hasn’t scored in something like 4 years is a very strange turn of events.

I'm not even being bitter here, but Michael Owen is one of the first names that come to mind.

He BURST onto the scene at France 98 and entered the limelight. A few good years domestically followed and his form in that UEFA Cup run in 2001 was incredible; he became a European superstar with his double in Rome, and won the Ballon D'Or shortly after ahead of Raul and Oliver Kahn. World at his feet. He then moved to Real Madrid when we stalled and you'd have put money on him going on to bigger and better things - the England goalscoring record, for one.

Now, five years later, he warms the bench every week and hasn't won a medal apart from the League Cup last year. He was a part of a side who went down. He can't get into the England squad. Simply put: he isn't very good.

I'd say it was sad, but I think he's an odious little twat.

Why be bitter? That won us the European Cup.

I would say no to Saviola. He was mentioned as a Messi/Aguero yes, but he's found a role at Benfica - not exactly a European lightweight. I think if you said Owen and Ortega would be where they are now in 2001, you'd laugh.

Well, where Ortega is now is fair enough as he's about 35, but if you're talking about him between 20-30, it was a clusterfuck.

Was thinking that as I typed it. Did Monaco win the group that year? And who did they play in the last 16? Little Slidling Doors moment there.

Just thought of him as he has played at some hughe clubs without ever seeming to get a consistent run anywhere. Forgot about him at Benfica I have to say.

Sorry, you're right. He hit his pomp late 90s, really.

Monaco did win the group and went out to PSV in the next round. That loss meant we had to go through in the manner we did v Olympiakos. The paper was lit, Rafa knew the team had to be built around Gerrard, and we believed.

Monaco were beaten home and away by PSV who we should have played in the final.

And I think in 2001, it was already clear that Ortega wasn't going to be the phenomenon everyone thought he would be. In 2001, Ortega was meant to be in his prime. Some of the goals he's scored in the Argentine league are magnificent to be fair to him.

PSV then beat Lyon and lost harshly to Milan in the semis...reckon we would have made it through to play Chelsea or Juve in the final and won? Or frankly, does it not matter in the slightests because we all know now we were destined to win it?!

Yeah, I've seen them. I think there's a top ten. Some are out of this world. But yeah, he wasted his talent. He should never have gone to Sampdoria. Thing went steadily downhill from there.

think Mendieta was a great player early part of this century, was one of the reasons Valencia reached 2 CL finals,  can't really put him in this. There was a good interview with him posted on here a while back which explained the reasons for the fuck up at Lazio.

I used to think Ortega was awesome at Samp and Parma but that was last decade, apparently he got sold back to Argentina because Parma didnt pay the money they owed on Crespo.

and to be fair to Mr Kluivert, he was consistently getting 20 odd a season for Barca and is the Dutch all time leading goalscorer

Oh and Walshy, Anelka outscored our Torres a couple of seasons back, hitting 19 i think in the league, yep the season we finished 2nd.
Would sacrifice Fordy in a sacred Mayan ritual to have him as the next Liverpool manager

Never really worked out for him at club level. Baffling really, looking at his performances for the national team.
