Half time: Luton 0-0 Liverpool
« on: November 5, 2023, 05:19:12 pm »
Frustrating performance so far, it looked like we started to run out of ideas a bit after a few early chances. This feels more like an FA Cup 3rd round than a league game, where we just need to forget the occasion and play the team in front of us.

There's really no excuse if we don't beat these.

Making it harder than it needs to be. Nunez and Jota both should have taken their chances.

Frustrating. We haven’t been great and have taken poor touches/lacked composure in the final third. We need to be more patient.

Also not sure it helps having Darwin, Jota, Salah as the three. They’re all making the same runs and we are lacking the build up we’d usually have out wide with Diaz. Worth nothing that Gomez doesn’t give us the same attacking threat or width that Tsimikas or Robertson do on the left too.

Think we need some more width here to try and stretch the field a bit. Too many players on both sides looking to cut in and occupying the same spaces.

No patience to build pressure and no width to stretch them, really allowed them to drag us down to their level.

Had enough chances still, bit more clinical and we'd be comfortable

We looked lively at first with Nunez.

Mac Allister is playing awful, diabolical defending and slowing down the game to a snails pace when we have the ball.

It's a small pitch anyway, and we need to stretch it to its fullest as they have so many bodies back. Possibly not the right game for Gomez to be at left back, we need overlaps to create space more centrally.

Was always going to be a scrap..

We're not offering enough down the sides, particularly without Robertson and Diaz (or even Tsimikas). Luton able to squeeze the play through the middle without that pace or threat.

Every time they come forward they're just looking for a free kick.

Very poor from us again. Have we had a good first half away performance this season?

Luton are much better than I thought but they're putting absolutely everything in. They're certain to tire as long as we can spread the play and make them work. If we get the breakthrough a second will follow shortly after.

No surprise to see the ref give Luton the foul when Konate and the striker both had a hold of each other, but nothing whenever Salah gets man-handled.

Also very kind of him to allow Luton an extra 30+ seconds at the end there to complete an attack.

Had a lot of shots, but most were only half-chances. Just need to keep going, once we get one more will come.

Unusually poor from Szob and Mac, Salah needs moving in the middle.

Hard work and frustrating but think it’ll open up second half and confident we’ll put some of the chances away. Carragher should never be on our games. He’s excruciating. Always looking to exaggerate the oppositions effectiveness whilst trying to find any fault he can with us.

One of those teams that defend 99% of the time & hope they can score in the other 1%. We've had good chances, we need to put one in and the game will change.

Edit Darwin, 6 shots, 1 on target. Doing almost everything right except that last thing. So close, so close.

I am not surprised about this, as Luton work really hard. But they're not going to be able to do it for ninety minutes. Be patient, don't do anything silly at the back ideally we need more width as we haven't stretched them enough from side to side. Also they are targeting Dom, he's probably had his quietest game so far. But I am confident the goals will come.

Still 45 (plus 5-10) to go. We can bring on Diaz to stretch them, or Gakpo. Or Elliott.

They’ve earned a bit of faith from us so far this season. We shall overcome.

Controlled the game largely, aside from a few breakaways. Created a number of chances early but having not taken one it got a bit scrappy and the crowd got up.

Start the second half well, stay patient and make the most of our chances

We’re lacking width either side and trying to play through the middle constantly where it’s congested. Need to be smarter with our use of the ball.

Need to sharpen up a lot, lots of players being caught flat footed when the ball breaks loose. We're also losing an awful lot of the 50-50 challenges with some rather weak tackling in the midfield. Our passing has been pretty sloppy at times as well.
