Is that really a rule? Because I’ve not heard of it? Surely it can’t be given as a foul when you make contact with the ball but the attacking player then makes contact with your legs as he goes flying over the challenge? There was no contact from Hummels foot with the player at all, all he got with his foot was the ball.

That's how it seems to me these days. Imagine if Holgate had cleared the ball before he kicked Mitoma in the knee. He would have got away with it in the past, not anymore.

He gets the ball, but his backside gets the man. The refs give them these days, and VAR won't overrule it. If Virg had done that, I'd be holding my breath, hoping that the ref doesn't give it, but wouldn't be surprised if it was given. As soft as it is.

Honestly that’s mad. I’ve never heard of that before, that they now give penalties in punhisment for some good old fashioned defending.

Defenders doing last ditch challenges (not that this was one of them), or sliding challenges, and stuff like that is great, it’s a spectacle, it adds to a game. Of all the things they could improve with football, taking that out of the game isn’t one of them.

Don't make that challenge unless you know you're not going to take the forward out in the follow through. A defender as experienced as Hummels should know this by now. A slight touch like that isn't going to sway the referee that you've made a foul.
