The misplaced arrogance of the modern football manager
« on: February 1, 2024, 06:36:45 pm »
Despite a great performance last night I’m still grieving the upcoming loss of Jurgen, just as much for his human qualities and lack of pretension as his ability to coach footballers

Then I noticed that Chris Wilder is having a moan about referees (which may well be justified - I don’t really pay attention to Sheffield United unless they are playing us) and the BBC is quoting him as complaining that, on entering the referees room to discuss an issue post match

"One of his assistants was eating a sandwich at the time, which I thought was a complete lack of respect. Hopefully he enjoyed his sandwich while he was talking to a Premier League manager."

It just brings home to you what a classy guy we are losing, and how many egotistical wankers there are in English football. Hodgson and Pardew spring to mind but there must be loads of other examples

honestly thought that was parody :lmao

But it’s not!

David Squires will surely be on that  ;D

But yes, Jürgen is as humble as they come. Funny thing is, because he’s such a big character and always has plenty to say, other clubs’ fans see him as arrogant - shows how little people actually listen and observe.  He had little ego, always very quick to acknowledge others and talk them up. He’s a down to earth man who hasn’t forgotten his upbringing, who happens to be the best football coach in the world, and a thoroughly decent bloke.

That is genius from Wilder :D

Although, I think it's just how some people are personally, there's plenty of managers who don't exhibit that sort of personality, Klopp being one.
We have to change from doubter to believer. Now.

Wilder probably knows he's not going to be a Premier League manager for much longer and is trying to milk the status for all it's worth.

Wilder's lost the plot as a manager since the lockdowns. He did well in getting Sheff U up to the PL and then that good half a season when they overperformed.

Since then though their tactics were figured out and he had 1 point half way through the next season and was sacked. Then flopped at Middlesbrough and Watford in The Championship and is out of his depth again managing int he PL, so he won't be a Premier League manager again probably.

Fuck off back to League One with your thuggish football. Their only tactic against us the other week was to kick us, you can't complain about refereeing decisions when you're not playing a fair game.

He's a poundshop Warnock.

I spoke to a Championship manager today, through work, he was sound to be fair

I think once they become more household names though, they lose a bit of humility

There are very few managers out there that embody the spirit of old fashioned football like Jurgen. He has a genuine and passionate love for the game, the likes of which is being eroded by clinical data driven coaching and appeasement of the social media fanbases.

Football is on a road to ruin and Jurgen was one of the only things distancing us from the dumpster fire.

Think the name 'referee's room' is the giveaway here.  From the referee's perspective, he's eating his tea in his own dedicated space and Chris Wilder has come bursting through the door to chat shit at him.  I think he's confused over who is being disrespectful in that scenario.

I have a vague recollection that an England manager turned up at Anfield expecting a car parking space. When told there was none available, he responded with "Do you know who I am?" - to which the steward replied "Yes and there's still none available"  ;D
I also remember the chairman of Bradford expecting the red carpet to be rolled out for him at Anfield when they appeared briefly in the top division and being very miffed when it wasn't.

If you are talking about misplaced arrogance you don't have to look further than the referees and officials.

wilder was pointing out how he felt the official was arrogant and had no right to be. He is a match official not a premier league manager

What I love about Wilder's comments is the official who he was talking about has almost certainly been involved in more Premier League games than Wilder has.

I do get it though, it goes to your head. I won the Charity Shield and Super Cup against City in the same week on Footy Manager 24 and called Guardiola a gobshite and a "specialist in failure."
If I were a linesman, I would execute defenders who applauded my offsides.
