Just came home from work, and started reading this post match tread, read the two first pages and then jumped here, so please have mercy on me if this has been said earlier.

It's a fucking disgrace that all in here is written by Liverpool supporters!! I just watched the 90 minutes, and then had to go to work, and I was disappointed. But a lot of the SHIT that is posted here is unbelievable! At least the people with no understanding of the game is pretty easy to spot.

Everybody is entitled to an oppinion, but sometimes I wish it wasn't so......

Well said, anyone would think we lost. Some fickle fuckers on here spoil it for everyone, I may just stick to the articles and give the rest a miss from now on, depressing as hell reading some of the vitriol that gets passed off as comment.

Hey, the initial post wasn't that bad (bear in mind i wrote it at 550am, singapore time). I respect the diversity of opinions presented in the thread but we won and that's all that matters. People were saying that i'm too generous with my ratings (especially the 7.5 i gave morientes) the way I see it, morientes' worked his pants off, was clearly knackered towards the 75 minute and opened channels for garcia to exploit.

I mean nobody slags Chelsea off for winning 1-0 (or for that matter Juve too) but we won 3-1! Look for the silver lining fickle fans. We won another trophy to put in the cabinet, next league match is against the high flying tottenham hotspurs, and the squad will be finalised (at least until the Jan. window) so we can look for some measure of consistentcy (be it boring boring liverpool football against teams that park the bus in front of their goal, or the exciting play that we brought to the table at the Ataturk).

I've got a bit of a rant here, but would like to hear what other people think about this, so its more of a question for those who want to respond:

What I want to know is why there was a large section of supporters in monaco who decided to sing "there is only one michael owen" when cisse was coming on the pitch??
I for one think its a fucking disgrace, i dont care who it is, we shouldnt be booing anyone OFF or ON the pictch for that matter.  Josemi for christs sake was DIRE, fucking aweful...... but Cisse was singled out, why?
I'm on holiday in NYC at the moment and watched it out there, a fella stood next to me saying "fucking cisse he is shit, why doesnt owen come back" my response was along the lines of "eh mate, Owen isnt a fucking liverpool player so when we are watching liverpool play, lets concentrate on the players we fucking well have shall we", Cisse's goals and his assist later this fella is praising him??  Fucking hypocrite, I just hope that everyone who was singing "there is only one michael owen" took a step back after the game and said fuck cisse came on with ten mins left and changed the face of the game, and realise they were being hypocritical c*nts  I'm livid about this to be honest, I dont care if Michael Owen comes back, if he does, he does if he doesnt, we've got others, but what i am getting at is that until cisse leaves, he is and will be our prized striker and should be treated like one.

Is it just me who thinks that it was wrong time, wrong place for such chants?

They get paid by MO's agent? Quite possibly ;)
(Sorry, this is possibly will be seen as an insult to "those fans").

Perhaps they get frustated with the lack of goal and they genuinely want MO to come back. They express their wishes to Rafa and the players and also to the board of course. The board and Rafa will not bother checking internet forum like this or reading the snail mails and emails.

I can't imagine if I were Cisse though. Just think when you're a target of speculation, you're ready to get into the picth, suddenly certain fans sing a song of the player who supposedly will replace you in the club (while you genuinely want to play for this club). It hurts, very very much!

Sadly, it looks like this season will closely follow the last.

You made that assumption like, 8 competitive matches into the season? You'd be a great meteorologist.

Perhaps we need to take off the red glasses and realise how poor we look. We were awful and none of the problems from last year are resolved. Slow in defence, wank on the wings.

"Rafa's a clueless manager. He had no idea how to manage a team. Valencia won the title twice due to luck. Our CL win last season was because we bribed Dida".

Is that what you wanted to say?

Rafa knows our problems, why the heck does he keep talking about priorities for RM and CBs?
Can you just celebrate the trophy win for once and leave the 'analysis' to a later time? There are no savegames to reload, it's over!

zenden was wank tonight, done fuck all since he has joined.

That would be the first two league matches, a tough away game at his old club where they put 10 men behind the ball and a home match against a similar outfit which we only beat because his run drew the foul for the free kick?

Oh and the pre season that was actually competitive?

What happened to fucking patience?

Just a couple of thoughts I had yesterday, after Cisse came on, now I dont want to turn this into a Cisse V Mori thread But if we HAD to sell one striker to make way for Owen for me it would have to be Mori!

Cisse shows more passion in his little finger than Mori does in his whole body!!! I really dont see why Cisse has come into this. Now dont get me wrong I wouldnt want any of our strikers to go now, but financially it looks like they will. It has to be Mori IMO.

On the whole I thought the performance was ok, but again more room for improvement. Alonso and Sissoko looking class aswell as our beloved Cisse.

Great to see Carra lift the trophy!

we were poor all night up to about the 80th minute. we held the ball, maintained posession yet we weren't able to break them down. we kept playing high balls to morientes, when the CSKA CB's were all tall and cleared the balls without any problems. the lack of service decent service to moro meant that he had to go deep and pick balls up for himself.

the centre midfield was excellent though, with xabi dictating play from the moment the match started to the moment he came on. didi was good at first, but he seemed tired at the end. i can't understand why rafa took off xabi for sissoko. didi was looking tired, and their the same kind of midfielder. sissoko played well though. clean tackles, runs after the balls, cleans up. he did his job exceptionally. we've really unearthed a gem here, and if he becomes half the player viera is i'd be happy.

sinama looked tired, and while he did a lot of step-overs, couldn't really beat his man. i can't understand why he was played centrally at first and garcia was moved wide right. i think he would have done better on the wing.

cisse was lucky to score both goals imo, but it'll still be a nice confidence booster. first one delfected off his hand and the 2nd one was a lucky rebound from a "wasted" chance. still, he scored the goals and his pace bothered the defenders more than moro did the entire match.

this match just shows that we really need a new CB and RW. its good that rafa knows this, and is doing his best to work out our team's kinks. give this team time, and with the key positions sorted, we should be able to chase for the title in a season. i'm not writing us off this season, but we've still got a lot of improving to do.

agree totally, lol

im glad some new boys got a feeling for winning cups though, and was nice to see them parading it about...

my only gripe would be that those yellow cards count towards champions league ones, wtf!, but the goals scored dont... and the ref was a bit quick with the cards too

I loved how the team took the piss out of the cup. Carragher looked too embarrassed to really hold it up and Cisse and Luis were putting on a show ;D

On a personal, I think it would be criminal to sell Cisse, even if it was to fund a right winger and centreback.

Well said i couldnt agree more with you. Why are we afraid to have 4 top strikers at this club. Why do we think it is too many. Others clubs have 4 strikers, Man Utd, Chelsea, Spurs, Birmingham.... Keep him. i think he is worth 10 to 15 league goals this season(even as a substitute) :wave

Yeah, we need improvement, but for a team that is obviously lacking in areas to come back and still produce the result, I can't fault them. The nature of the win wasn't as satisfying as it could have been, but imagine how frustrated we would be if the lads hadn't shown the spirit to pull it back? We do have fight, I'll say that much for us.

Last night we lacked width that's for sure. It's the one area that truly affects our attacking options and consequently our strikers ability to score. Particularly Moro.

It was interesting to see Rafa try Stevie Finnan out on the right side of midfield. After the Sunderland, dare I say it, he was looking better in the fullback position than even last season as he was getting forward more and putting in the best crosses from the right. I had been thinking to myself what would he be like in the position he played last night?

But he found it tough last night - he was getting double teamed and he doesn't have the skill to take players on man to man. He had to come inside a lot. So we lost that width.

Let's keep our heads up though; last night wasn't fantastic, but Gerrard will be available for the next game, Kewell is due back soon and we know Rafa is after that right winger. Not only that, Crouch will be able to play pretty soon with his ability to provide for team-mates and cause opposing defenders problems.

We have options. Just keep the faith and support the players we've got!

The only bones I have to pick with regards to last nights match is that we seemed to miss any kind of penetration from the midfield.

They played five across the back so trying these nifty through balls is always going to be tough, but neither Finnan nor Zenden (or JAR when he was moved forward) made any kind of penetrative runs to put fullbacks under pressure.

Just look at what happened when Carvalho and the young Croat kept running at Josemi.
It dragged Carra and Hyppers out of position and thus created the space.

True Garcia was wasteful but we did create chances for him at least, but as soon as Djib came on there was suddenly someone who ran at their defence and we all know how that ended.

I totally agree that with our lack of natural wingers Mori and even Beanpole man will struggle cause there is fuck all for them to feed off.

We can only hope that Benitez has something up his sleeve.

Come off it. All that was missing was the finish. We had all the possession, never looked threatened. Even their goal was a bit of a freak, with three players making uncharacteristic mistakes in defence.

Another day, little Luis would have scored three, but he was always involved and looked up for it. I was more worried about Morientes, who didn't look right at all.

Have to agree with you Skeebo. I don't want Nando to be sold but I'd be gutted if Cisse went. I thought the same after the Sofia game, even though he wasn't at his best, but last night showed why we bought him. I'd love Owen back but not at the expense of Cisse.

Anyway, great result.  :champ I don't think most teams treat this as a nothing cup; CSKA Moscow weren't and you can bet if the likes of Chelsea got the chance they wouldn't either.

Have to agree with those who had given Luis a higher score than Nando, and can't really see how some have given him less. Yes he was frustrating at times, but he tried damn hard and didn't give up.

Something needs to be done about that yellow card rule though. Chelsea and Arsenal are entering the competition without having kicked a ball in Europe, yet we have played 7 games, all of which count on yellow's, yet goals don't count. I suppose I can understand the qualifiers counting, but not last nights! Great competiton penalising your champions.

I think the words european champion league's winners are the words that you are looking for, my dear LFC-enforcer and against the winners of the 2nd most prestigious club competition in europe, the UEFA cup (which we have also won in 2001).

Anyway, i welcome the international break and we definitely need to pick it up against Tottenham (who I know will definitely not patk the bus in front of goal(

exactomundo. And just in case anyone forgot, Rafa's Valencia side won the Super Cup in the year they won the UEFA cup (ie beating the CL champs). So if anyone dares to suggest Rafa does not know what he is doing (which many clowns do indirectly by slagging players) then they should wake up and smell the sangria.

I for one think its a fucking disgrace, i dont care who it is, we shouldnt be booing anyone OFF or ON the pictch for that matter.  Josemi for christs sake was DIRE, fucking aweful...... but Cisse was singled out, why?

Well this is as good a place to start as any...

As someone who was there ;D The "one Michael Owen" chants didn't start as Cisse came on but about 5 minutes before that as the fans were starting to tire of the constant missed crosses and shots. In fact for about 10 minutes prior to that we were chanting for Cisse to come on.

And to turn the tables completely there was a half-hearted chance after Djibril had done his stuff of "you can stick your Michael Owen up yer arse..." ;D

To the game itself and it seemed to be a tale of dominating the play but failing to get the final ball or shot correctly - and that has been a problem that has been around for at least 3 or 4 years - I remember having exactly the same thoughts during Michael Owen's various barren spells. We seemed to be crossing the ball to somebody sitting on Crouch's shoulders and I lost count of the number of times the goalkeeper was able to gather the ball past the far post (including one ocasion where I think it was Pongo actually pulled away from the ball when he could have got there before the keeper).

Another thing that caught my eye was the number of times a hole seemed to open in the defence for a guy in the centre of the pitch but he chose to pass it out wide(r) rather than have a punt. I realise these things only happen momentarily but I wonder if that has proved to be the difference between playing Gerrard (who would have a pop) and not.

Overall, after the saga of getting here in the first place (I think I must have bored the life out of M|chael and his mates telling the story for the 5th time ::) ;D ) I'm pretty satisfied with that but to invoke a corny French pun I think it's a case of "Champignons of Europe" - mushroom for improvement.

PS - I would love to ask the policeman who forced me to drink the 2 bottles of Coca Cola I had brought with me before he would let me in how these were any more dangerous than the flares in the CSKA end... ::)

Personally, I hope neither Nando nor Cisse leave. They are both good players. Nando is being unfairly bashed by a lot of people on here. He worked hard last night and did well I thought. He is not an explosive player but one who will drop back, keep the ball moving, and bring others into play. He did that last night and I thought it was an encouraging performance. A goal or two wont hurt him, but lay off him.

Cisse has played 560 competitive minutes for us this season and scored 6 goals. He has played some of those minutes on the right flank.

It works out to one goal every 90-odd minutes.

Sometimes we expect too much.

We just won another trophy. We did so deservedly and were comprehensively the better side (than CSKA Moscow, you say? So what? You can only beat what is in front of you). Besides their goal we had nothing much else to worry about. We had 60 percent of the ball but they have a sound three-man defence that was hard to break down. Yet we won. Another European trophy.

Go have a beer.

Lets not kid ourselves, this was a dire performance and a dire game we were lucky to win.

We played against a side who camped in their own half. We were in complete control. When we got the equaliser we so much deserved, the game was over. We didn't play the best of football, but we owned the game, we kept our patience and we won.

Essentially, during the summer, we have strengthened areas we were already strong in (midfield and goals – Carson is as good as any premier keeper and Dudek, the much maligned is more than capable). Both Reina and Sissoko are fine players, but these weren’t the positions we needed players in. we also bought Crouch and a raft of kids who won’t see first team action for two to three years. The jury is still out on Crouch, but since we already have a top class targetman in  Morientes, I don’t see why we needed another striker.

True. We have not (yet) addressed the weak areas.

My biggest concern is with the manager’s substitutions. Why replace Alonso, our most creative player with a destroyer like Sissoko? Our problems were not in the middle. Finnan went off for Pongolle. Not a bad option, accept of course Pongolle is totally match unfit and what was really needed (obvious to anyone watching) was pace to get behind the defence. When Cisse finally came on, his impact was immense. Two goals and an assist says it all. On a personal, I think it would be criminal to sell Cisse, even if it was to fund a right winger and centreback. Before anyone starts suggesting this would be a good idea, I would like to point out that it’s the mark of a mickey mouse club to sell key personnel to fund the purchase of replacements.

Good question why we took Alonso off for Sissoko. But it worked.
Pongolle on for Finnan was a good sub. FSP may lack match fitness, but there's only one way to get it. IMO the Super Cup is the right kind of game to get it.
Cisse had a fantastic impact. But if we are to sell him, then I'd expect us to bring Mikey back. Can't imagine we'd sell him to fund a RM and CB. That would be stupid.

That’s right, prepare for another season of ‘analysts’ bemoaning our lack of width, cutting edge and pace in defence. And to be perfectly honest, they are right.

Maybe. We'll see who we sign for CB and RM.

There are some pretty poor remarks being made on here.
OK it wasn't the best game we have ever played but I thought we looked solid on and off the ball. Carvalho was the only real threat tonight and he looked class, would have caused trouble to any defender I can think of.
Alonso looked class as usual but was lacking runners for his passes.
Hamman solid as ever if a little un-fit towards the end.
Morientes in the first half I thought played well, a bit non-existant in the second.
Garcia should have scored a couple, but was always trying and getting into the right positions. Great touch to let Cisse through on goal, and played well for the goal, ran towards the front post then turned away to the far past giving him plenty of room.
Cisse was un-stoppable last night. I thought Rafa had left it too late for him to make an impact but he proved me wrong again.  I thought tonight we saw a bit more of the real Cisse. Good movement off the defenders great pace and a bit lucky. He should have scored his second goal with his first attempt picked power over placement, but he got it in which is what counts.
Great cross for Garcia, by far the best cross of the game if not of the season so far.
And don't forget  he's still young and can improve.
I don't know why all the media are saying that we need to sell Cisse to buy Owen. Why can't have both or is that just greedy.

And I also have to have a little rant about the interviewer. Why is his first question always about Owen. You could see it on Rafa's face, I bet he's well pissed off talking to these people now, Owen this... Owen that.... just leave it. We all know Rafa's not going to come out and say anything so why keep asking. I think Rafa wishes he could just go to bed and not get out till Thursday so he doesn't have to face any more questions about Owen.

Is Zenden the answer to the lack-of-width problem? In the first few matches, I thought he was, but he doesn't go to the line to whip in crosses anymore. What happened?

Is Kewell the answer? I'm afraid not. Since Houllier's days, he doesn't play (or doesn't like to play) where he's most dangerous.

IMO, Pongolle has the potential to be a winger. He has the ability to take defenders to the corner, sometimes even two of them. If he also learns the Barnes-like ability to get past them and to whip in ACCURATE crosses ... wow!

Rafa is right with regards to priorities. Even if Owen comes in, he too will suffer from lack of service from the wings. Of course, it will be a dream come true for me if a CB, RM and (not or) Owen comes in by Wednesday, without sacrificing Cisse.

By the way, if Reina can learn a few tricks from Peter Smacker to deal with one-on-one situations, he'll be immense.

First of all, Get in you beauty. Another european trophy in the cabinet. How we won, will do for me. Didn't play great but won easily in the end and deserved it. A sure sign of a good team is one that wins, and especially wins trophies, even when playing well below their best.

Loved that Riise cross where he took it right to the line and actually ran into the corner flag.  I also think Flo can one day be a great right winger, but last night his inclination was to come inside.  Needs a good mentor.

I also think Flo can one day be a great right winger, but last night his inclination was to come inside.  Needs a good mentor.

Your joking right?

He's a front man end of. Cisse is far better out there at the moment, he's the only player who can deliver a decent cross from the right except for SG.

We drastically need a RW'er but until we get one only Cisse is worthy of the job at the moment unless SG plays out there in a 4-4-2/4-4-1-1 with Xabi and Momo in the middle.

Am I the only one that thinks Josemi played quite well?

He did alright, he seems to lack a bit of intelligence for me though he goes to ground too much when he doesnt need to, for instance last night went to ground trying to tackle a player from behind, i remember carra having a go at him for it.  He could really do with improving on that in my opinion.

Not for me - Carvalho had him in his pocket all evening.

Mediocre performance for me only made better by the introduction of Cisse.

Still dont understand one up front when we have no width but that is the call of the manager.

Other than that another trophy, so cant really grumble.

But, the team is still a long way from the finished article but we knew that already didn't we?
Where's this Yakimoto fella?

Yep, it is a bit pathetic. Carra almost looked a tiny bit embarrassed picking it up.

What do people think about the "There's only one Michael Owen" chants from the travelling Kop yesterday?? I wasn't too impressed with it to be honest  :-\

Come on guys! It's just not working for us to play one striker only!RAFA has to try it 4-3-1-2! And I want to see Harry again soooooooooooooooo much! I heard he's already OK, I guess we'll have him back soon!

About last night - happy about the trophy, disappointed of the poor performance by Xabi and Moro! Xabi seemed quite confused, and Nando - I couldn't think of one good attack from him, although he did good in defensive part. The RB is so damn needed.....
Once again - love the job Garcia did, he was trying a lot, and most of the shots were from him! Keep doing your thing, Luis!
...He's football heaven

A bit of frustration coming out. We didn't look like scoring in the 2nd half before Cisse came on. The MO chant was soon replaced by one for Cisse.

Right, this must surely have been posted in here, but isn't it just slightly ironic that we used to bemoan the fact that there never were any songs for Owen? If he does come back I expect his name to be sung on a weekly basis, even through his two customary two-month barren spells per season.

What fickleness.
All right, but apart from the sanitation, the medicine, education, wine, public order, irrigation, roads, a fresh water system, and public health, what have the Romans ever done for us?
