Liverpool beat Roma & Barcelona beat Galatasaray

Barcelona will top the group on nine points. Liverpool and Roma will be tied on seven points but the Reds will go through by virtue of a better record against Roma.

Liverpool beat Roma & Barcelona and Gala draw

Liverpool, Roma and Barcelona will all be tied on seven points. Their records in games against each other will be identical (each having won one, drawn two and lost one) so goal difference will be taken into account to determine the qualifiers. Roma will top the group and Liverpool will have to have won by at least two clear goals or more to progress. A 1-0 win will see Barcelona go through.

Thanks for all the permutations, I think we now all know whats needed.

Can anybody help me to find a website or publication that gives Champion League results since group format was brought in. Basically since 92-93 season.  Current books only give last seasons results and tables.

I was searching to find if any team had won a Group with 7 points as could happen in our Group Of Death! I much prefer the old 2 leg knock out format , but I realise it aint gonna change now with so much money involved.

But on the official champions league site, it says if points are level, team placements will be decided on

1) Goal Difference
2) Goals Scored
3) Away Goals scored

It says nothing about results against other team(s) in question, so we will go out on goal difference either way, unless we hammer roma and get throughj like that

roger_h,

http://www.uefa.com
http://www.xs4all.nl/~kassiesa/bert/uefa/index.htm

I did some search and there are actual cases where 7 points gives you 2nd place finish:

1999-2000 (1st group stage)
Group A ----- Pld W D L GF GA Pts
Lazio --------- 6 4 2 0 13 3 14
Bay. Leverkusen 6 1 4 1 7 7 7
Dynamo Kyiv --- 6 2 1 3 8 8 7
Maribor ------- 6 1 1 4 2 12 4

1995-1996 (group stage)
Group B ----- Pld W D L GF GA Pts
Spartak Moscow 6 6 0 0 15 4 18
Legia -------- 6 2 1 3 5 8 7
Rosenborg ---- 6 2 0 4 11 16 6
Blackburn ---- 6 1 1 4 5 8 4

However if say Liverpool beat Roma and then Barca drawn with Gala then 7 points will be enough to win the group and THAT has never happened before : the closest in the history of Champions League is 8 points.

1998-1999 (group stage)
Group B ------ Pld W D L GF GA Pts
Galatasaray --- 6 2 2 2 8 8 8
Juventus ------ 6 1 5 0 7 5 8
Rosenborg ----- 6 2 2 2 7 8 8
Athletic Bilbao 6 1 3 2 5 6 6

So history is in the making......

Cheers KFC , great search, I'll have another look at that site. I guess we all want Gala to win as then we only need a 1 goal victory. Also, with comments from Barca players and Spanish press they are not exactly flavour of the month in these parts!

It means that even the time added at the end of each game could be vital if  goal difference was the decider!!

LFC_4_Eva - see my full (and graphic!) description on "Roma: Through if we Win - Out if we dont - PROBABLY" (http://www.redandwhitekop.co.uk/cgi-bin/YaBB/YaBB.pl?board=LiverpoolFC;action=display;num=1016055710) for the actual tie-breaking criteria.

See also my post on "Italian Job" (http://www.redandwhitekop.co.uk/cgi-bin/YaBB/YaBB.pl?board=LiverpoolFC;action=display;num=1016198664) for an explanation why any punishment of Roma could also disadvantage us.

Mercury - You were on Paul Tomkins' "Red Issues" Forum weren't you? You should remember "Antinky-Winky"...  ;D ;D ;D
