Is Woodburn at least featuring in the U23? He's not gotten much time this season - doesn't help that we are out of the league cup.

Ben Woodburn signs a new deal with #LFC  http://lfc.tv/AKqW

Quote
Ben Woodburn has today committed his long-term future to Liverpool Football Club by signing a new contract.

The 18-year-old penned the deal at Melwood on Wednesday afternoon after agreeing fresh terms with the Reds.

It’s the latest milestone in a remarkable last 12 months for Woodburn, during which he made his senior debut for Liverpool, became the club’s youngest ever scorer, was named the Academy Player of the Year for 2016-17 and also notched a goal for Wales on his senior bow in a World Cup qualifier.

Woodburn told Liverpoolfc.com: “It’s an unbelievable feeling to sign a new contract with Liverpool.

“This is the club I want to stay at and be here as long as possible. When I was told, all I wanted to do was sign the contract.

“It feels good. Now I just want to carry on and hopefully show the manager what I can do.”

Part of demonstrating what he’s capable of is improving his skill set by working hard at Melwood and enhancing his already considerable talents.

Woodburn added: “I think there is loads of room for improvement. I’ve just got to keep working and trying in training every day and hopefully I will improve.

“Defending and maybe getting a few more goals [are what I want to improve]. Just trying to come in with the first team and play like a first-team player.

“But I think I’ve grown as a player and matured physically and technically, and grown in confidence.

“For the rest of this season, my aim is just to carry on, try to play as many games for the U19s and first team. Hopefully I will get some more appearances for the first team and progress in the U19s Champions League.”

Jürgen Klopp's delight at Ben Woodburn's new deal: http://lfc.tv/AKqC

Quote
Jürgen Klopp today described Ben Woodburn as the 'perfect balance of talent and attitude' as the youngster committed his long-term future to Liverpool by signing a new contract.

The 18-year-old inked the fresh deal at Melwood on Wednesday afternoon, taking the latest step in a remarkable journey over the last 12 months.

Woodburn became Liverpool’s youngest ever goalscorer last November when he netted in a League Cup tie with Leeds United in one of nine first-team appearances before going on to be voted the club’s Academy Player of the Year.

At international level, the forward made his senior bow for Wales and marked it with a goal in a World Cup qualifier against Austria in September.

Reacting to news of Woodburn’s new contract, Klopp told Liverpoolfc.com: “This is brilliant news, although without sounding complacent about it, it is absolutely not a surprise.

“Ben knows how committed we are to him and he and his family know this is the best environment for him to grow, learn more and become even better and better.

“What a talent this young man is. We don’t call him the Prince of Wales for nothing, although judging by his facial expression when we do he would probably be happy if we stopped with this!

“Ben is that perfect balance of talent and attitude. One of either is OK - to fulfil your potential at the very highest level you need to have the maximum of both.

“I like that he is prepared to be patient. He has already had some big playing moments, for Liverpool and of course Wales. But when we ask him to go to the Academy and do things like play for Stevie’s [Gerrard] U19s in the UEFA Youth League, on nights we play Champions League football, he approaches it so well.

“Alex Inglethorpe and all the staff at Kirkby should be very, very proud of the contribution they make to these young players’ progress. It’s a brilliant environment and culture for an ambitious young player.

“It’s quite poetic that Ben signs this contract on the same day that Rhian Brewster scores another hat-trick for the England U17s in a World Cup semi-final against Brazil. I love this.”

I'm made up for Ben, it is great to see the younger talents moving up and progressing. I loved the sentence from Ben in which he says there is a pathway to the first team. It so important that we continue to give our most talented players a chance to realise their ambitions here. A big thumbs up to the work done by everyone at the acedemy.

Having watched the #7 of Brazil for Vasco again pros, I would say he is probably the best player on the pitch. But if you press a side and cut their abiility to get the ball to their attacking players, they will be largely ineffective.

I find it funny how England have managers at U17 and U20 who can win world cups, play in a very high level tactical way with pressing and counter pressing and yet for the senior side they serve up Hodgson, Allardyce and Southgate. How?

Had to laugh at Brazil going full England at the end and shooting from 30 yards

Anyway, back to Woodburn. Hope to see him playing for the first team again soon.

I guess the nationality of the coach they've pre-determined has to be English and the closest English manager we've got that plays a brand of attractive football we've got is Eddie Howe.

Made up for Benji, need's minutes in the first team though.

With the absence of Lallana I definitely expected him to start at least the odd game in the middle, maybe Klopp just doesn't think he's quite ready just yet.

He's so young that unless we need him, it's arguably better to shelter him from the pressure of the first team and give him the odd game here and there.

We actually have quite a few midfielders to rotate and give minutes too when you think about it: Coutinho, Lallana, Hendo, Can, Gini, Milner, Ox, Grjuic, Woodburn

That put's Woodburn somewhere around 8th/9th in the pecking order.

Looking at that list actually, we do have a tonne of depth in midfield. There's 2 top players & 2-3 highly promising youngsters (plus more in our youth setup that are just one tier down). The problem is that the 4 names in the middle are very... 'OK'.

You’re gonna make me cry like a big girl saying stuff like that lol

Jari Litmanen (along with Kewell) was one of my favourite players to sign for Liverpool. It was a dream for me seeing him pull on the Liverpool shirt. As a kid I used to watch him mash up the Dutch league for Ajax on eurogoals on Eurosport. The mighty mullet.

So excited to see the kids breakthrough. More exhilarating than any £100m signing we could make ... to see homegrown and young lads like Trent, Woodburn and Gomez star for us is now the dream.

Suppose although I'd say you'd break our midfield down to three components. Creative: Lallana, Coutinho, Woodburn. Shuttler: Lallana, Wijnaldum,Can, Milner and Defensive:Henderson, Can, Grujic.

He'd be 3rd out of the first list which is why I'm surprised we've not seen him when there's been matches our midfield has just been horribly slow.

To be honest I feel we would of done then came Wales and his excellent show for them.

I feel it's more down to us wanting to keep him grounded and also getting knocked out of the league cup so early.

He will get game time for us this season for sure.
