Remember sitting down to watch that Everton cup Game on a Sunday afternoon with my dad and brother. A rare televised game back then. One of many Barnes and Beardsley one twos opening up the other team, and Houghton with what felt like a massive leap for a little bloke to nod home.

February 22nd

1946 – ‘Voice of Anfield’, George Sephton was born in Liverpool. He has been playing music and reading out team news at Anfield since August 1971.

1991 - Kenny Dalglish announced his resignation as reds boss in a press conference at Anfield. He had been in charge for nearly six years, leading us to the double in his first season, and a further two League titles, FA Cup, two FA Charity Shields and Screen Sport Super Cup. The pressures of management, and his role in counselling players, supporters and the city of Liverpool in the aftermath of the Hillsborough disaster led to him stepping down.

2005 - We beat Bayer 04 Leverkusen 3-1 at Anfield in the first leg of our Champions League round of sixteen tie. Luis García and John Arne Riise netted before Dietmar Hamann put us in a seemingly unassailable lead in stoppage time, with his eleventh and last reds goal. Anthony Le Tallec came off the bench to make his first senior appearance under Rafael Benítez. However, a Jerzy Dudek fumble handed Franca the chance to grab an away goal, which many commentators at the time felt might prove crucial. They were wrong.

2015 – We won 2-0 at Southampton, with Philippe Coutinho and Raheem Sterling on target, with the home side claiming a series of spot kicks that were not given by the referee.

February 23rd

1980 - David Fairclough put the reds ahead at Anfield against Ipswich Town early on, but Eric Gates equalised against the run of play six minutes from time with one of his five goals past us. That was when the drama really started as Terry Butcher then fouled Kenny Dalglish in the box, with referee Bert Newsome immediately pointing to the spot. The visiting players were incensed, and as Terry McDermott ran up to take the spot-kick Frans Thijssen hurled a dollop of mud across his path. Town keeper Paul Cooper got down well to smother the shot and the Kop was outraged when the ref failed to order a retake.

2008 - Fernando Torres scored a hat-trick to pass twenty goals for the season after we had fallen behind against Middlesbrough at Anfield. We went on to win 3-2, with Jérémie Aliadière sent off for the visitors for slapping Javier Mascherano. This meant we became the first team ever to score hat-tricks in all of the League, FA Cup, League Cup and Champions League in the same season. Tuncay Şanlı and future red Stewart Downing netted for the visitors.

2014 - Daniel Sturridge scored in his seventh consecutive League game as we eventually beat Swansea City 4-3 at Anfield. He put us in front inside three minutes, with Jordan Henderson extending our lead before ex-red Jonjo Shelvey scored a spectacular goal and Martin Škrtel put through his own net to level the scores. Sturridge headed in his second before Wilfred Bony equalised from the spot. Henderson then grabbed the winner.

2022 – We thumped Leeds United 6-0 at Anfield, with Mohamed Salah converting two penalties and Joël Matip also on target in the first half hour. Sadio Mané added two late goals before Virgil van Dijk headed in during stoppage time.

February 24th

1962 - Roger Hunt netted his fifth hat-trick of the season in a 5-1 Second Division win over Middlesbrough at Anfield. Ian St. John bagged the other two.

1965 – We defeated Birmingham City by the odd goal in seven at Anfield as we led on four separate occasions. Ian Callaghan scored twice, including the eventual winner, with Roger Hunt and Peter Thompson also on the scoresheet.

1998 – Steven Gerrard signed his first professional contract at the age of seventeen. He went on to net 186 times in 710 reds games, helping us to claim the European Cup, UEFA Cup, two FA Cups, two UEFA Super Cups and three League Cups as well as winning the PFA and Football Writers’ Player of the Year awards once apiece.

1996 - Stan Collymore bagged a brace, with Michael Thomas netting his only goal of the season to give us a 3-2 League win at Blackburn Rovers. Stan’s first goal came from a tamely struck shot that was heading straight into the arms of Tim Flowers until it unexpectedly struck a divot and bounced into the net! Cue 5,000 travelling Kopites singing ‘England’s number one’ to the rueful keeper. Jason Wilcox struck one of his four goals against the reds, with Tim Sherwood also scoring as Rob Jones played his 200th game for the club.

2007 - Robbie Fowler bagged his last two reds goals, converting two first-half penalties in front of the Kop in our 4-0 thumping of Sheffield United at Anfield to take his reds tally to 183 in total. Javier Mascherano made his debut, while we reached a new club record of nine consecutive clean sheets at Anfield in the League. Sami Hyypiä and Steven Gerrard added goals in the second half, while Peter Crouch suffered a broken nose after being kicked in the face.

2011 – Jamie Carragher played his 137th European game for the club, a new British record, as we beat Sparta Prague  1-0 at Anfield in the second leg of our UEFA Europa League round of 32 encounter. Dirk Kuyt headed in the only goal of the tie late on

2020 – We beat West Ham United 3-2 at Anfield to equal the English top-flight record of eighteen successive wins, with Gini Wijnaldum nodding us in front early on. However, we fell behind to an Issa Diop header and Pablo Fornals strike before we eventually triumphed through Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mané to restore our 22-point lead at the top of the table.

1978 - Graeme Souness scored his first reds goal in a 3-1 home League win over Manchester United. His stunning left-foot volley was later voted as the BBC’s Goal Of The Season. Ray Kennedy and Jimmy Case netted our other goals.

1987 - We made it through to the Littlewoods Challenge Cup Final, as the League Cup was then known, by beating Southampton 3-0 in the Semi-final second leg at Anfield. Nigel Spackman made his reds bow, while Ronnie Whelan, Kenny Dalglish and Jan Mølby were all on target in the second half

2001 - We won the Worthington Cup in the first domestic final to be played outside England, at Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium. We beat Birmingham City 5-4 on penalties after the match had ended 1-1 to secure Gérard Houllier's first trophy. Who could forget witnessing Jamie Carragher striding forward to bury our fifth spot-kick, before Sander Westerveld saved the decisive penalty from future Blue Andrew Johnson? Robbie Fowler had opened the scoring, before a late Darren Purse penalty took the game into extra time.

2009 – Yossi Benayoun headed the only goal of our Champions League round of sixteen first leg match at Real Madrid.

2010 – Bruno Fernandes headed Unirea Urziceni in front in our UEFA Europa League round of 32 second leg in Bucharest before we came back to win 3-1, with Daniel Agger playing his hundredth reds game. Javier Mascherano equalised with his first reds strike before Ryan Babel put us ahead on the night. Steven Gerrard completed the scoring with his 33rd goal in continental competition to surpass Alan Shearer as Britain’s all-time leading scorer in European football.

2016 – James Milner’s early penalty was enough to secure victory over Augsburg 1907 e. V. in the second leg of our UEFA Europa League Round of 32 tie, as we went all the way to the Final in Basel that season. Portuguese midfielder João Teixeira played his eighth and last reds game.

I was in Cardiff in 2001. The first cup I saw is win (did see us lift the League in 1990). Great day out, great city and stadium. And my dad sorted us to go down on a minibus, pulled in to the services to pick us up and Ron Dixon from Brookside was onboard. :D

2002 - Emile Heskey scored as we held Galatasaray to a 1-1 draw in our Champions League second group stage game in the intimidating Ali Sami Yen Stadium. Chris Kirkland had an inspired game, in just his fourth reds appearance.

2004 - Milan Baroš played his fiftieth reds game as we beat Levski Sofia in the first leg of our UEFA Cup Third Round tie at Anfield 2-0, with Steven Gerrard and Harry Kewell on the scoresheet.

2006 - We entertained Manchester City, with Joey Barton seeing red for the visitors and Harry Kewell grabbing the only goal of the game.

2012 – We secured the League Cup for a record eighth time, eventually defeating Cardiff City 3-2 at Wembley on penalties. Joe Mason scored for the Welsh side after Glen Johnson had struck the crossbar, with Martin Škrtel equalising after an hour. Substitute Dirk Kuyt put us ahead in extra time, before clearing off the line. However, Ben Turner then bagged a very late leveller. Steven Gerrard and Charlie Adam both failed to convert from twelve yards, but Kuyt, man-of-the-match Stewart Downing and Glen Johnson all converted before Steven’s cousin Anthony Gerrard missed the decisive spot-kick to hand us the cup.

2015 – We traveled to Turkey, losing 1-0 to Beşiktaş JK at the Atatürk Olimpiyat Stadi in the second leg of our UEFA Europa League Round of 32 tie, with the game going to extra time as we had won the home game by the same score. Unfortunately, we lost a shoot-out 5-4, with Dejan Lovren having his decisive penalty saved. Javier Manquillo made his nineteenth and last appearance for the reds from the bench.

2005 - We were beaten by Chelsea in the Final of the Carling Cup in Cardiff, 3-2 after extra time. John Arne Riise struck in the first minute, and we led until a Steven Gerrard own goal rescued the Blues with just eleven minutes left. Didier Drogba bagged one of his eleven goals against us with Mateja Kezman also netting before Antonio Núñez bagged a consolation, his only reds goal.

2019 - We thumped Watford 5-0 at Anfield, with Sadio Mané scoring twice before the break. Divock Origi was on target in the second half, before Virgil van Dijk headed in a brace, as Trent Alexander-Arnold ended the match with three assists.

2022 – We won the League Cup for a record ninth time by beating Chelsea 11-10 in a penalty shoot-out once the Final had ended goalless after two hours. All eleven reds players converted their spot-kicks, including goalie Caoimhín Kelleher, with Blues’ keeper Kepa Arrizabalaga, who had been brought on from the bench especially for the shoot-out, then sending his penalty over the crossbar.

I was at those 2005 and 2012 League Cup finals. 2005 was a really good day until the last 10 minutes of normal time. Great pre match boozing in Cardiff, into the stadium and then a goal in the first minutes. Atmosphere under the roof was sensational.

1981 - We entertained Southampton , with Ray Kennedy and Terry McDermott on target in a 2-0 win.

1984 - Kenny Dalglish made his first reserves appearance for the reds, nearly seven years into his Anfield career. He had been out of action for two months since fracturing a cheekbone against Manchester United. Only 360 fans were there to see him lay on a goal for Paul Jewell as he played the full ninety minutes.

1987 - John Aldridge bagged his first reds goal to hand us a 1-0 victory over Southampton at Anfield. Centre-forward Alan Irvine made his fourth and final senior reds appearance in this game, coming on as a substitute for Gary Gillespie, with Ian Rush moving back into midfield to accommodate him.

1995 - Ian Rush equalled Denis Law’s FA Cup scoring record of 41 goals as we beat Wimbledon 2-0 at Selhurst Park in a Fifth Round replay. John Barnes was also on target. Rush went on to net 44 FA Cup goals in total, still a competition record. Unfortunately, we were knocked out at Anfield by Tottenham Hotspur in the next round.

2010 - We scored in our 25th consecutive home League game as we beat Blackburn Rovers 2-1. Fábio Aurélio played his 110th and final game of his first spell at Anfield. Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres struck in the first half, either side of a Keith Andrews penalty after Jamie Carragher’s inadvertent handball.

2016 – We lost the League Cup Final to Manchester City on penalties. Fernandinho put the Sky Blues ahead shortly after the break, with Philippe Coutinho equalising to send the game into extra time. Emre Can converted the first spot kick before Fernandinho missed. However, Lucas, Coutinho and Adam Lallana’s efforts were all saved as we lost the shoot-out 3-1.

2021 – Curtis Jones opened the scoring behind closed doors at Sheffield United as we won 2-0. Roberto Firmino’s strike deflected off Kean Bryan in what was our 7,000th goal in top-flight football, becoming the second club to reach that landmark.

A few former/future Reds in that Leeds team.

I think both our goals were very decent in that game. I also think it was an early Sunday kick off. Very early because I have a vague memory of waking up, checking my phone and it was already 2-2! Those were the days!

What an odd player Alan Smith was. Burst onto the scene as a decent striker at Leeds, left and then pretty quickly just got transformed into an absolute plodder of a defensive midfielder.

March 1st Highlights

1978 - We won 2-1 at SL Benfica in the European Cup Third Round, with Jimmy Case converting a free-kick and Emlyn Hughes netting in torrential rain after we had gone behind. This was Benfica’s first defeat in 47 games as Nené struck the first of his three goals against us for the Eagles.

1980 – Legendary Blues forward Dixie Dean died from a heart attack after attending our 2-1 win at Goodison. Ex-Blue David Johnson scored, added to by a controversial Phil Neal penalty, with Peter Eastoe scoring one of his four goals against us. Ex-reds boss Bill Shankly was also in attendance at this match.

1988 - We played in a testimonial match for Sammy Lee, beating Club Atlético Osasuna 2-0 at their Estadio El Sadar. Kenny Dalglish and Ray Houghton scored the goals, but unfortunately Sammy himself could not play due to injury.

1989 - Mike Marsh made his reds debut in our 2-0 home League victory over Charlton Athletic, when Peter Beardsley struck for the first time in eighteen matches, later added to by a John Aldridge penalty past ex-reds reserves keeper Bob Bolder. This was our first home fixture in six weeks.

1991 - Alan Hansen retired through injury. He had signed from Partick Thistle for £100,000 in May 1977 and made 620 reds appearances, notching fourteen times and helping us to claim three European Cups, eight League titles, two FA Cups, three League Cups and four FA Charity Shields.

2014 - We won 3-0 at Southampton, with Luis Suárez and substitute Raheem Sterling on target before Steven Gerrard converted a last-minute penalty, his tenth consecutive success from the spot, while future red Adam Lallana hit the woodwork.

2015 - We beat Manchester City 2-1 with Jordan Henderson scoring before Edin Džeko equalised for the visitors with one of his five goals past us to date. Philippe Coutinho struck the winner.

2021 – Scottish forward Ian St. John died. He joined from his hometown club Motherwell in May 1961 for a then club record fee of £37,500. The Saint scored 118 goals in 425 games for the reds, including the winning goal in the 1965 FA Cup Final, also helping us to win two First Division titles, the Second Division and FA Charity Shield, before moving to South Africa in February 1971 to join Hellenic.

2023 – We beat Wolverhampton Wanderers 2-0 at Anfield, with Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah both on target late on.

Ok, I do vaguely remember that. :D

Funny how these things work though - I often have a much more vivid recollection of where I was for results from the mate 80s and 90s than I do from the last few seasons. Think it’s just easier to cross reference where you were because of school/university etc.

1988- Peter Beardsley brought out a book about that season, a great diary, said it was fucking baltic cold that night, John Barnes had to have deep heat on his hands at half time, so cold he needed help getting his boots off at the end of the match, and by the time he made it to the shower the hot water was gone.

1989, we had a load of games in hand by this point, a win which got things back on track slowly but surely

1991, felt like everything was falling apart, kenny gone, whelan and mcmahon out with broken legs, Hansen retiring. He was strongly tipped to take over as manager, ended up never managing. What a player though, imagine him and Van Dijk? We would have 38 clean sheets a season.

2014- Really began to think we could go and win the league that night.

2015- Henderson and Coutinhos goals were belting

2021- RIP the Saint. With my age I remember him more for Saint and Greavsie, a really great way to start your saturday, he had a very infectious laugh too

1977 - We lost 1-0 at Saint-Étienne in the Third Round first leg in the European cup but of course famously fought back to qualify for the Semi-finals in the Anfield return. Dominique Bathenay volleyed the only goal of the game, after Steve Heighway had hit the post at the other end.

1985 – John Wark netted the only goal of Nottingham Forest’s visit to Anfield from the spot as Ian Rush played his 200th game for the club.

LFC played towards Kop: Second half

1986 - We won 2-1 at Tottenham Hotspur live on TV with Steve Perryman playing his final Spurs game, his 655th in the League. Ian Rush bagged his twentieth goal of the season in the final minute, with Jan Mølby also netting past ex-red Ray Clemence after Chris Waddle had given the home side an early lead.

2002 - We beat Fulham 2-0 at Craven Cottage, thanks to goals from Nicolas Anelka and Jari Litmanen. The game will also be remembered for a stunning last-ditch tackle from Stéphane Henchoz to deny Steve Marlet a goal. Stephen Wright played his 21st and final senior reds game that day.

2003 - Goals from Steven Gerrard and Michael Owen handed us a 2-0 win over Manchester United as we won the Worthington Cup Final at the Millennium Stadium, to claim our seventh League Cup with Jerzy Dudek being named man of the match. John Arne Riise was playing in his hundredth reds game, while Milan Baroš came  on from the bench and then later substituted.

2008 - Fábio Aurélio scored his first reds goal as we won 3-1 at Bolton Wanderers. We opened the scoring when keeper Jussi Jääskeläinen spilled a Steven Gerrard shot that was heading wide and knocked it into his own net. Ryan Babel also got on the scoresheet as he completed his first full ninety minutes in the League, while Avi Cohen’s son Tamir scored for the Trotters.

2013 – Luis Suárez scored a hat-trick in our 4-0 win at Wigan Athletic to take him past twenty League goals for the season, after Stewart Downing had headed in an early opener.

2016 – Keeper Simon Mignolet played his hundredth League game for the reds as we gained some revenge for our League Cup Final defeat three days earlier by beating Manchester City 3-0 at Anfield. Adam Lallana and James Milner scored in the first half, with Roberto Firmino on target after the break.

2022 – We beat Norwich City 2-1 in the FA Cup Fifth Round at Anfield on our way to claiming the trophy for the eighth time. Takumi Minamino struck twice in the first half.

2003 was one of my best days out watching us I think. Trip to Cardiff, behind our goal for Owen’s late second goal and a massive let off, and didn’t see a Manc all day apart from down the other end of the stadium. Really miss those Cardiff finals!

I can remember watching that 1986 Spurs game with my dad. Slightly frozen/snowy pitch I think. Remember Molby’s goal.

March 3rd

1897 - George Allan netted the only goal of the game at Nottingham Forest as we reached the FA Cup Semi-final for the first time in our history.
(Sorry No You Tube Highlights )

1951 – Don Welsh was sent a letter following a telephone conversation to confirm his appointment as Manager. His contract awarded him £1,500 per year, with an additional annual £500 for expenses. He took charge of 232 reds games, winning just 81,

1969 - Bobby Graham became our first ever FA Cup substitute, coming on for Roger Hunt in a 1-0 home defeat to Leicester City in a Fifth Round replay, with the striker throwing his shirt to the floor in a rare display of dissent. Tommy Smith had a penalty saved by Peter Shilton in that match after a John Sjoberg handball

1973 - Emlyn Hughes struck a brace in the final eight minutes to hand us a 2-0 win at Goodison Park. This helped give us the momentum to claim the League title that season, our first for seven years, as we came out of a slump of just one win in our previous five games.

2004 - We beat Levski Sofia 4-2 in Bulgaria to reach the Fourth Round of the UEFA Cup 6-2 on aggregate, in what was our fiftieth European match since Gérard Houllier took sole charge. Sami Hyypiä played his 250th reds game, scoring our final goal. Steven Gerrard, Michael Owen and Didi  Hamann struck the others.

2009 – David N’Gog and Yossi Benayoun both struck in the second half as we beat Sunderland 2-0 in a Premiership fixture at Anfield. On the same day, it was announced that we had become the number one-ranked club in European football according to UEFA’s coefficient system, following the previous week’s victory at Real Madrid. This was the first time we had been ranked Europe’s best since 1985.

March 4th
1951 - Kenny Dalglish was born in Dalmarnock, Glasgow. He signed from Celtic for £440,000 in August 1977 and bagged 172 goals in 515 games, helping us to countless honours, both as a player for which he is fêted by many as the finest ever on the pitch, and later in two spells as Manager. His greatest moments as a player include scoring the goals that clinched the European Cup at Wembley in 1978, and the first half of a League and FA Cup double at Stamford Bridge eight years later, while his efforts in the aftermath of the Hillsborough disaster ensure he retains an even more special place in our hearts.

1955 - Joey Jones was born in Bangor. He signed from Wrexham for £110,000 in July 1975 and made exactly a century of reds appearances, bagging three goals and helping us to win a European Cup, two League titles and the FA Charity Shield in his time at Anfield. He rejoined Wrexham for £210,000 in October 1978.

1967 - New record signing Emlyn Hughes made his reds debut in a 2-1 home League win over Stoke City, when Chris Lawler and Roger Hunt netted, while Peter Dobing bagged one of his eight goals past us. ‘Crazy Horse’ went on to make 665 reds appearances in total.

1972 - We thumped Everton 4-0 at Anfield with our first two strikes being own goals, from keeper Tommy Wright and John McLaughlin, with Wright also putting through his own net in his next game! Chris Lawler and Emlyn Hughes completed the scoring, the latter while playing his 200th League game for the reds.

1978 - Ray Clemence set a club record for a goalkeeper by making his 336th consecutive appearance in a 3-1 defeat at Chelsea, with Steve Ogrizovic stepping in to make his debut in the next match. Phil Neal opened the scoring from the spot, our 5,000th League goal to date. Steve Finnieston struck the last two of his four goals against the reds, with Tommy Langley also on the scoresheet.

1981 - Graeme Souness grabbed a hat-trick to become the first and so far only reds player to bag two European trebles in the same season, in our 5-1 trouncing of CSKA Sofia in the European Cup Third Round first leg, en route to lifting the trophy for the third time. Sammy Lee and Terry McDermott were also on target. The Bulgarians actually made a number of good chances but either missed them, or saw Ray Clemence repel their efforts.

1995 - Robbie Fowler and Ian Rush struck as we beat Newcastle United 2-0 in a Premiership match at Anfield.

2000 - Liverpool fielded nine non-British born players for the first time, with Jamie Carragher and Dominic Matteo being the only home-grown talents who started our 1-1 Premiership draw at Old Trafford, when Patrik Berger netted a trademark free-kick before Ole Gunnar Solskjær equalised.

2015 – We beat Burnley 2-0 at Anfield, thanks to a Jordan Henderson strike and header from Daniel Sturridge.

2017 – We beat Arsenal 3-1 at Anfield, with Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mané netting before the break. Danny Welbeck pulled a goal back, but Gini Wijnaldum struck late on.

2021 – Chelsea won 1-0 behind closed doors at Anfield, thanks to a Mason Mount strike. This condemned us to a fifth consecutive home defeat for the first time in our history.

£210,000 in 1978 feels like a huge sun of money for Wrexham to be spending - what division were they in at the time?!

I remember that Berger free kick. Must have been 30 yards out. Absolute screamer. One of those stupidly early kick off times, I remember big queues outside the pub waiting for it to open. Was a sign we were building something a bit stronger under Houllier. That season ended badly but laid the foundations for all that was to come the following season.

March 5th

1951 – Don Welsh was officially appointed Manager. His contract awarded him £1,500 per year, with an additional annual £500 for expenses. He took charge of 232 reds games, winning just 81, and has the indignity of being our first boss to get the sack, after presiding over our relegation from the top flight in 1954, and failing to lead us back to the promised land.

1960 - Billy Liddell scored his 228th and final reds goal, becoming our oldest post-war goalscorer, aged 38 years 55 days. We beat Stoke City 5-1 in the Second Division at Anfield, with Jimmy Harrower adding a brace, and Roger Hunt and Dave Hickson also netting. Hickson was in fact on target for the fourth consecutive match, in which time he had struck six times in total.

1980 - Emlyn Hughes was presented with the OBE by Her Majesty the Queen. ‘Crazy Horse’ played 665 times in his twelve years at Anfield, netting 49 times and winning two European Cups, four League titles, two UEFA Cups, FA Cup, UEFA Super Cup and two FA Charity Shields. His greatest season was probably 1976/77 when he captained the side to within a whisker of the treble, as well as being voted the Football Writers’ Player of the Year. Sadly, he died in November 2004.

1983 - We beat Stoke City 5-1 at Anfield again. Kenny Dalglish scored twice, with the other goals coming from Phil Neal, Craig Johnston and Graeme Souness. Kenny reached 300 senior club goals that day, with future Toffee Paul Bracewell on target for the visitors.

1986 - We were held 2-2 at Anfield by Queens Park Rangers in the second leg of our League Cup Semi-final, despite twice taking the lead on the night. Steve McMahon and Craig Johnston netted our goals, but Jan Mølby missed a penalty and Gary Gillespie and Ronnie Whelan both scored own goals. This put us out of the competition, as we had lost the first game 1-0 away from home. Bruce Grobbelaar was playing his 300th reds game.

2008 - Fernando Torres scored a hat-trick as we thumped West Ham United 4-0 at Anfield, with Steven Gerrard completing the scoring. This was his second successive home treble.

2008 - The club announced that it had completed the purchase of 100% of the official club website, liverpoolfc.tv.

2022 – Sadio Mané bagged the only goal of the Hammers’ League visit to Anfield.

And one you may have forgotten  ;D

2023 – We secured our record victory over Manchester United, thumping them 7-0 at Anfield, their joint worst ever defeat. Cody Gakpo gave us the lead shortly before the break, but the floodgates opened in the second half. Darwin Núñez headed in before Gakpo netted again. Mohamed Salah bagged a brace as he became our all-time top Premier League goalscorer. Núñez nodded in again, with Roberto Firmino completing the scoring.

That 1986 League Cup one jumps out. I have a vivid memory of waking up early the next morning to get the paper which we must have got delivered really early as no one else was up, and staring at the score line in disbelief. Especially the two own goals bit. Just didn’t make sense!

Can remember cheering for Oxford in the final as some kind of revenge. Oxford v QPR League Cup final, imagine that these days!

Call I think is 848 for us? So Perryman is remarkable really.

the 1986 game was a bit mad, Peter Hucker I think saved that penalty, one of only three Molby missed out of 45.

2023 was mental considering it was 0-0 until the 43rd minute, United fell apart over that but we were brilliant too

2002 - After floodlight failure delayed kick-off, we put on a sparkling display to beat Newcastle United 3-0 at Anfield, with a brace from Danny Murphy and a Dietmar Hamann strike. Nicolas Anelka put on probably his best display in a red shirt. Further good news that day came with the announcement that Gérard Houllier was back on Merseyside, as he continued his recuperation from his heart operation.

2007 - Jamie Carragher played his 57th game in the European Cup to equal Phil Neal’s club record as we lost 1-0 at home to Barcelona, although we still progressed to the Champions League Quarter-finals on the away goals rule. New owners George Gillett Jr. and Tom Hicks attended their first game at Anfield in a cauldron of noise. Both John Arne Riise and Momo Sissoko rattled the woodwork, but Eiður Guðjohnsen put the visitors ahead on the night with a quarter of an hour remaining, although we held on for a famous victory.

2011 – Luis Suárez dazzled as Dirk Kuyt scored a remarkable close-distance hat-trick as we beat Manchester United 3-1 at Anfield, two days after boss Kenny Dalglish’s sixtieth birthday. Javier Hernández bagged a late consolation, the first of his three goals past us to date, with record signing Andy Carroll making his reds bow as a substitute.

2016 - We won 2-1 at Crystal Palace, despite Joe Ledley giving the home side the lead shortly after the break and James Milner being dismissed after an hour. Roberto Firmino equalised before future Eagle Christian Benteke grabbed a stoppage time winner from the spot. Philippe Coutinho was making his hundredth League appearance for the reds.

2018 – We were held to a goalless draw at Anfield by Porto in the second leg of our UEFA Champions League Round of 16 tie, having won the first game in Portugal 5-0.

That Newcastle game in 2002, I was flying home after a year in Australia. Hadn’t seen my dad in months, his first words to me were “3-0!”.

That Kurt hat trick was fun. The first goal in particular was just outrageous skills from Suarez. Proper beating a man in a phone box kind of stuff.
