Manchester United mark return to women’s football with a new Liverpool rivalry
https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/45181889

A first chance to put one over Utd.

Have to say, to lose 7 players to Utd (plus Stoney) is pretty disappointing, especially when you take into account the fact they will require at least one season in order to be promoted to the WSL.

Obviously the debate around us losing so many players has already been done but one of the key takeaways is that even at this early stage of the WSL, there is no loyalty between players and clubs. Not saying there is much in the men's game, but could you imagine that number of male players defecting to Utd?

If the women's game only comes down to the size of the contract then it will be much harder to develop the brand. In most team sports, the supporters follow the team and the stars on that team, lose all the stars at once and the team loses some of it's identity. In the case of the women's teams, the only brand they have to rely on is the name which they have inherited.
Some clubs were always destined for greatness...

United are rumoured to have a Ł5m budget. That blows most clubs out of the water and when women footballers don't earn a whole load in their career they'll go to where the money is. That being said most of the players who went to United played for their youth sides before going elsewhere because there wasn't a senior side to go to, so there is a little but of loyalty there...kinda

According to the article, he didn't feel that management/owners were supporting him.

Quote
Chris Kirkland has taken caretaker charge of Liverpool Women following the shock resignation of their head coach, Neil Redfearn, after only three months and two competitive matches in charge.

Despite a shaky start to the season and certain behind-the-scenes tensions, the decision is said to have stunned the club. The 53-year-old informed Liverpool of his decision on Thursday night and the players, most of whom were signed by Redfearn this summer, were told at training on Friday.

Following a narrow cup defeat by Manchester United’s newly formed side, Liverpool lost 5-0 to Arsenal in their Women’s Super League opener last weekend.

Redfearn managed Leeds United and Rotherham United prior to being appointed head coach at Doncaster Rovers Belles in December 2017 and winning the second-tier title.

He was named as Liverpool’s manager, replacing Scott Rogers, in June but during the close season 12 senior players departed, many for Manchester United, managed by the former Liverpool and England defender Casey Stoney.

This exodus seemed a legacy of unhappiness under Rogers last season and, crucially, led to the captain, Gemma Bonner, departing for Manchester City, the defender Sophie Ingle to Chelsea and the England left-back Alex Greenwood to United. It left Redfearn to sign virtually an entire new team, with several players arriving from the second tier.

Kirkland, a former England international whose daughter is in Liverpool’s centre of excellence, was appointed the club’s goalkeeping coach in July and will take temporary charge, alongside Vicky Jepson, the assistant manager. Liverpool face Durham in the Continental Tyres Cup on Sunday.

Only last weekend Redfearn scouted Durham and, in a series of interviews, he had been consistently positive about the job. He accepted the post in the hope he would be furnished with the resources and backing to compete with Chelsea, Manchester City and Arsenal at the top of the table. It is believed he had become increasingly disillusioned about what he perceived as Liverpool’s commitment to achieving this aim.

A club statement on Friday read: “The club would like to thank Neil for his work in rebuilding the squad ahead of the 2018-19 season and wish him the best of luck for the future.”

Seems things have turned a bit gloomy since our domination a few seasons back..
Hope we can deal with this with as much competence as we have done with the men's team. Sad part is that we've lost all those top players in the meantime. :(

Finished 1-0.

Spot on mate - should have been a free-kick to us in a dangerous position - not sure how the ref managed a adjudge it wasn't a foul - clear and obvious contact on LFC winger, no contact with the ball. Chelsea defenders start walking back to defend, LFC players walk forwards (a good indicator at times for refs who may be 'uncertain') - ref gives goal kick. Hard to take that.

(though a nice overhead kick for the goal)

2-1 win over the weekend against bottom side Yeovil over the weekend. Courtney Sweetman-Kirk with a 92nd minute winner

Penaltypool struck again in the 1st half but Yeovil grabbed an equaliser near the start of the 2nd half

LFC women still in 8th place in the table.

A real 6 pointer next with 7th place West Ham coming to Prenton Park.

Does anyone know what is the club plan or vision with regards to our Women team? We’re obviously far from competing with likes of Chelsea, Arsenal and City. However, with clubs like Utd investing positively, are we just planning on just participating and trying not to get relegated?

I have given up trying to figure out what the deal is.

At one point I do think we were fully behind legitimately pushing the women's team. The overhaul ahead of the 2013 season saw major changes and we started doing the type of things which no other club in England had progressed onto doing. It won us the league title.

It is my understanding that the person who brought about this overhaul was employed by the club in a position unrelated to the women's team, but they had a genuine passion for the women's game and were able to convince the club to step it up. That person actually left very shortly after getting the overhaul off the ground. It seems that, once they were gone, so was the genuine passion behind the project.

Ever since then we have been going through the motions to a large extent. But there is an odd sort of disconnect somewhere because we can be halfarsing it yet at the same time we we can also become the first Premier League affiliated side to ditch the inherited shirt sponsor and sign a bespoke deal for the women's team (that's finished now and we don't appear to have a replacement but my point still stands).

The long and short of it is that we got ourselves into a leading position but then let it crumble. The club did not properly have eyes on the operation of the women's team - they appointed people to run things and left them to it for the most part, only occasionally sharing the brains which runs the rest of the club so well (i.e. getting the shirt sponsorship). The signs of trouble were there for a good few seasons, but only once the wheels had well and truly fallen off to the point where the club simply had to intervene did they bother to do so. It was too little and far too late. Call it disinterest. Call it incompetence. It's probably a mix of both plus other things on top.

It's very difficult to say where we stand right now because we are the masters of talking a good game. But there is absolutely no reason why we can't be doing considerably more than we are. Being motivated by a genuine passion for the women's game helps tremendously to get things signed off and implemented but it isn't vital.

I was referring to an ex director of communications.

The whole 'one club mentality' thing began while Ayre was still here and he himself used it an awful lot. If our overhaul had had a tag line, that would certainly be it.

You still hear it trotted out now and then but I'm not seeing evidence of it meaning anything nowadays. Which naturally makes you wonder if it ever meant anything. The last six years or so feel like nothing more than sound bites and puff pieces.
