We have to accept that Salah wasn't going feature in the top 3 ghis year as he was merely good rather great (by his unbelievable standarfs) last season and normally you have to win the big prizes to get it. Unless you are Messi in which case you got votes just for turning up.
Yes Messi is still brilliant and still had a great season in terms of goals, but nobody can tell me he was the standout candidate this year (or in 2019).
If Mo keeps this up, he is nailed on next year, but I'm sure he'll want the big trophies in his hand before then.
Messi was a standout candidate in the first half of the year - him and Lewa were clearly the 2 best players in the months Jan to July, with Lewa scoring 1 more goal in his league (but getting 6 fewer assists), with the Copa for Messi, and the romanticism of him carrying Argentina to their first Copa since 1993, meaning on that half a season, he probably deserves it marginally more than Lewa - this half season though, since Aug, Lewa has clearly been the best player on the planet with Salah second.
If you compare Messi to Salah, its close overall for me - Salah was particularly average by his high standards (9 goals and 2 assists in 1912 PL mins is actually worst than Werner, GA per 90 wise, who has been many would argue a flog - Werner across the whole of 2020/21 in the PL had a GA every 145 mins, compared to that period where Salah only got 1 every 174 mins) in the first half of the year, which drags him down - if you look at the full calendar year it's definitely closer, but I think I'd still argue Messi still was overall better across the whole of the year (especially if you ignore Nov as the voting for the award had already completed) - its just since Aug, when Messi has been at PSG and not been playing much, that Salah has been on fire - that makes it look one sided in favour of Messi - if you do totals for the whole season it becomes closer - Messi has played 2943 mins in La Liga, the CL and Ligue 1 and scored 29 goals and got 11 assists - Salah has played 3845 mins, for 29 goals and 9 assists (only 1 goal and 3 assist in Ligue 1 this season though so its not like he has inflated his numbers by scoring for fun in France, quite the opposite actually).
