Anderson has been bowling all week as well. Apparently Woakes has a niggle and that's why he hasn't bowled much in this test.

I don't think England are much more up against it than Australia are. The only difference so far has been Steve Smith otherwise we'd have had a sizeable first innings lead at Edgbaston and at Lords in this test. The bowling is a lot closer than you think as well and if you add Archer into that then there's a real variety. We're missing Anderson but I genuinely think he was left out of this test to rehab further and not because he was injured again.

A lot were critical of the boos for smith in the first test.

The applause for him yesterday showed just how silly the criticism was.  It was just panto, there was nothing in it and it was a mark of respect as much as anything

Interesting that Sky are dropping Gower from their coverage..

The right decision I feel... he doesn’t add a lot and is somewhat insipid compared to others...

I don't get cricket mindset at times.

Play starts at 12.10 then lunch at 1.30pm.

What's the point in that? Forget lunch or just start at 12.30 with lunch now.

Draws in cricket just kill the game

Steve Smith has been diagnosed with concussion and will not take to the field today.

Australia will submit an application to the ICC match referee to bring in a concussion substitute.

Which just goes to show the difficulty with concussion and how late symptoms can occur. He was off the field for a while, was doing well with his concussion screening by all accounts but must have had delayed symptoms.

There’s a concussion substitute?

When did that start?

And who let him play on yesterday?  That was reckless given that.

Cricket Australia statement in full: Steve Smith has been closely monitored by medical staff overnight. He slept well but woke up with a bit of a headache and feeling of grogginess. He reported his left arm is much better.

As part of the Cricket Australia concussion protocol, repeat testing was performed this morning and demonstrated some deterioration, which is consistent with the emergence of the symptoms he was reporting.

On that basis, he has been withdrawn from the match. The Australian team will lodge an application for the concussion substitute with the match referee.

In terms of his availability for the next Test, it will be considered over the coming days but the short turnaround is not in his favour. He will be assessed on an ongoing basis and will have a precautionary scan on his neck on Sunday.

Cricket Australia statistics show that 30 per cent of concussions in Australian cricket are delayed. It is not uncommon for players to pass their tests and feel well on the day of an injury and then display symptoms 24 - 48 hours later.

if they let him play yesterday, there’s no way he will miss the third test.

They won't have a choice if they follow concussion protocols. He has to be symptom free for at least 24 hours before moving through the stages. That takes him to tomorrow, 2 days before the test. There's 5 stages with 24 hours between each, there's not enough time.

He should never have been allowed to come back out yesterday.

Why? What if he wasn't displaying any symptoms yesterday? I think Australia have played this by the book. The medical staff took him off when he clearly didn't want to, regularly checked him out, sent him back when he wasn't displaying any symptoms and then withdrew him when he woke up reporting a headache and dizziness (as reported by Sky). That's what I and probably any other medical team would have done it.

That would be extremely negligent and make a mockery of everything they've said.

A 2nd concussion when someone is already concussed is seriously dangerous.

I’m not disagreeing with you.

But I’m suggesting that they will just ignore them.

I hope not though.

But they haven’t ruled him out already which worries me.

Just because he's all over the place doesn't mean that he's displaying signs of concussion. Australia and their medical staff would have had far more information on this than you would have watching on the tele. I trust them in this instance. The statement from CA backs that up.

They’ll still play him in the third test.

They won't have a choice.

Daft as it is, probably depends what happens here. If they manage to win they’ll probably feel like they can not play him.

I'd be very very surprised if he played the next test. I don't believe the medical staff will allow it to happen. If they took him off when he didn't want to yesterday and have withdrawn him today when they could still have a chance of winning the test then they show they care about player welfare and safety. There's too short a timescale between tests to announce he is concussed and then have him return.

What tests do they do? There's nothing that can predict if someone is back to 100%. Not even a scan. It's hard to recreate the intensity of play in the middle. It's a very uncertain area of cognition. I'm not saying they were wrong at the time to think he was fine but his batting demonstrated he clearly was not. The "tests" are extremely insensitive and I suspect there'll be stricter regulations regarding head injuries in the coming years.

Totally agree.

But it worries me that they haven’t instantly ruled him out.

Maybe that’s just so that they don’t create a story whilst the match is on though.

Concussions are not to be fucked with. If there was even a 1% doubt yesterday he shouldn't have been allowed back out.

If they play him in the next game they're a disgrace.
