AFC Liverpool started well, showing promise and winning an early corner, from which Jack Sinnott headed behind. However, the match soon developed a rhythm with Everton comfortable in possession up to and around the halfway line as the Reds failed to put them under any real pressure but the Blues lacked penetration going forward.
The home side meanwhile looked to play their trademark passing game but couldn’t find any openings in a well marshalled Everton backline. As a consequence, Franny Barry’s looping shot from twenty yards shortly before half time was the only time Jondrach Stanek was called into action while Ryan Cox’s off target header from Tom Stewart’s long throw in was the closest they came to finding the back of the net.
The opening goal came somewhat out of nothing on fifteen minutes as long clearance out of defence was flicked on by Calum Dyson, leaving Nathan Broadhead in the clear and the Welsh Under 17 winger made no mistake in slotting the ball past Tom Stewart into the corner of the net.
Midway through the half, David Henen had a good opportunity to double the lead after Broadhead’s chip put him in behind the Reds’ defence but the Belgian Under 19 striker could only find the side netting. However, five minutes before the break good pressure from Michael Donohue and Dyson won the ball for the Blues halfway inside AFC Liverpool’s half and Dyson carried the ball to the edge of the area before curling it into the top corner beyond the reach of Stewart.
The start of the second half was a different story as AFC Liverpool began closing down Everton in packs, pressing them high, and hope for the home fans was reborn nine minutes after the restart. Following a foul by Jack Bainbridge on Cox, Steven Jones found the bottom corner of the net with pinpoint accuracy from the dead ball twenty five yards from goal.
Just a minute later hopes were raised even further as Everton were reduced to ten men when Bainbridge received his second yellow card for another foul on Cox in a similar position but on this occasion, Jones didn’t have the beating of Staek as his free kick deflected off the wall and over the bar.
However, before the home side could take any real advantage of the extra man, they found themselves two goals behind once more. A driving burst forward from Donohue ended with the ball deflecting into the path of Henen and the striker showed some neat skill to create the space to get his shot away, firing low into the corner beyond the reach of Stewart.
With their two goal cushion restored, Everton appeared to gain control of the match once more and Donohue broke down the right to send a cross into the box, which was met by Henan on his wrong foot and as a result he sent the ball sky high over the bar,
The introduction though of Ronnie Morgan midway through the half and the resulting change of shape gave AFC Liverpool new impetus and from this point on, they never looked back.
Sinnott, Morgan and Michael Girvan combined out on the right before the right back sent in a cross that was met by Cox only to be tipped over by Stanek. From the resulting corner, the ball ricocheted around the box without anyone in a red shirt getting in a clean strike until Cox’s shot on the turn from six yards rolled into the back of the net.
Just two minutes later, another foul conceded just outside the box gave Jones another opportunity to strike at goal and though this time his effort was straight at Stanek, the keeper failed to hold onto the ball and Sinnott pounced to level the scores.
As well as momentum now being on their side, perhaps fortune was as well as straight from the kick off, Everton went on the attack and Broadhead unleashed a thirty yard shot which struck the outside of the post.
Still, there was no stopping the men in the red shirts now as AFC Liverpool immediately went down the other end as Jones fired just over the bar from twenty yard. Carl Peers’ burst forward was then ended just inside the box as Donohue upended the Reds’ midfielder, for which he received his marching orders as it was his second yellow card. Cox placed the ball on the spot and confidently struck the ball past Stanek to put AFC Liverpool into a lead that they wouldn’t relinquish.
