Pele's 1,300 goals?
« on: December 19, 2010, 04:46:11 pm »
I know Pele was great and I'd never try and downplay his legacy or talent, but is there any proof the bloke did score 1,300 goals in his career? I find that very hard to believe.

No, a lot of them were also scored in youth matches so we'll never really know if that was real or not.

Pele's actual record is 784 goals in 855 games, the 1300 total includes friendlies etc.

Didn't Romario notch up a 1000 goals?

Pele also included goals scored during training and warm ups.

Lately, the flacid one also adds those scored whilst playing Fifa and PES2011.

Obviously impressive, but it'd be like putting Torres in the championship or lower - the opposition Pele was playing against was not consistently at a very high level.

Even for Romario, it started getting a bit weird. Those 1000 goals target was a bit of joke.

when players score that amount of goals it`s says more about the standard of footy they play in that the quality of the player.
to score a 1000 goals you`d have to score 50 goals a season, every season, for 20 years.
i remember rushie scoring 49 one season and that was incredible, to do that for another 19 seasons would be impossible.

Nice to see eurocentrism still lives on.  ::)

There was not much difference in football quality between Europe and S.America in Pele's time.

I'm referring to the goals he would be scoring within his own league. Santos won consecutive league titles and Brazilian cups which can suggest that either Pele was so dominating, which no doubt he was, but it can also suggest that intra-league competition was not the highest.

Not true, the Brazilian league was one of the best in the world back then.

Or it could also suggest that Pele was just that good.

When you see some of the old footage of Pele getting the living shit kicked out of him you wonder how the likes of Ronaldo would have coped back then.

Wasn't it 51 including a Wales goal and a penalty in Rome?  :)

Meh been argued to death but the Brazilian league was the best in the world at that time, it's not like now where the top Brazilians play anywhere but Brazil, the cream of the crop played in their home league up until the 80s. Hence us getting stuffed once upon a time by a Zico led flamengo side

I rate him as one of the best ever along with Maradona and Messi (yes, the latter is a personal opinion of mine), but not because of 1300 goals he scored. More because of 3 world cups, and performances in them, as well as his time in Santos when they beat top European clubs.

The 1300 goal thing is full of "fake goals" if you will, just to get him as high as possible. Romario had a lot of such goals too.

I agree entirely with your opinion; Messi is in the same bracket as those two legends and Pele's consistent performances in the WC's make him so well known and respected.

the goals number is clearly exaggerated  . . . but shouldn't take away from how great he was

in recent years i was in the maradonna camp in term of GOAT, but then saw "footballs greatest" recently and saw footage of pele and you can see that his power pace and technical ability were equal to players of today and the reason he stood out so much

so no again i can't choose between pele and maradonna as GOAT

although pele's self promotion is annoying it still doesn't change how good he was

Excuse my ignorance but WTF is GOAT?

Greatest of all Time...only know that because Maurice (not a GOAT) Greene had it tattooed on his arm I think.

By the way I have it on good record that at least 2 of Pele's goals were offside. The flaming cheat. It seemed that when I were a lad it was a given that Pele was the greatest. In recent years there has been more and more clamour to crown Maradona as the best ever and a belittling of Pele in the process. I haven't seen enough bar the usual footage to know but to win the World Cup at 17 and 3 times in total is pretty special.

Read an article years ago that had interviews with both Pele and Maradona, and the whole basis of the article was "Who was the best?".

They both said Di Stefano.

For me, Pele was the best. Agree with Lfsea, if you want some history and insight into the South American game, listen to the World Football Phone In, one of the best football podcasts going. Tim Vickery is my personal favourite football broadcaster working today, he's a student of the game and always offers an intruiging opinion.

For example, when someone says, Pele wasn't as good as Garrincha, and the people of Brazil hold Garrincha in higher regard, Vickery says it's a load of nonsense, which is absoloutely right.
