I'm thinking about buying a mate's Epiphone off him, it's a hohner rockwood pro rp250, is that any good?
Is it an Epiphone or a Hohner, I'm confused?! Although I would say there can be so many variables that it's difficult to know by brand or even model sometimes - granted a Gibson Les Paul Standard is much more likely to be better than a Squier Strat, but it's not a certainty. My mate's got a Mexican-made Fender Strat that knocks spots off many American Standards to my ears (can't play it though as I'm a southpaw, curse my luck) and it only cost him Ł200. He's probably played hundreds of USA strats, other Mexicans, vintage, Japanese etc. etc. and never found one as good. Maybe they just had this one bloke who was shit-hot covering the day they put it together or something!
See if it sounds good to your ears, action is acceptable etc. Cosmetic marks shouldn't matter but I'd check the tuning. I've had several Epiphone guitars and man some have been a right bitch to tune, my Casino (first electric), while being a totally lovable creature despite me mistreating it, the G string has never stayed in fucking tune, I've had it set up by about eight different people/shops, done it myself, tried all kinds of strings and tuning tricks, but it's just something I've learnt to live with. Bending it back into tune is alright if you're playing lead but a bitch for chords and rhythm!
