That amp is boss for its price. Really good choice, unless your into metal. Epi LPs are inconsistent in quality. Some of them are great, but mine has irritating little hardware problems, like stuck knobs, a bad input, bad tuning pegs, and I keep having to fix it. And its nothing to do with the specific model, its just luck. At that price range though, many guitars will feel like that.

Also, it depends on what style of player you are. LPs are great for exact players, like Slash for example. They've got a rich creamy sound, perfect for playing classic rock and stuff. Fenders are better for messier players like Frusciante or Jonny Greenwood, cause they respond well to being played with aggression.

Finally beware of open coil humbuckers (that epi has got them) through solid state amps. Can sound pretty harsh at times. Check it out before buying.

Prices in euros seem more expensive than prices in dollars btw. Strange that.

I've now got another set of guitar/amp.

I've had my eyes on this for a while, the real version is played by David Ford and Simon Wainwright, two of my favourite musicians.

http://www.thomann.de/ie/epiphone_the_dot_vs_egitarre.htm

I was told this amp has got great sound for its size and loads of different sounds to it. I was told it was better for messing around with than the Orange amp.

http://www.thomann.de/ie/vox_vt15.htm

Like I said I only really play for myself and I'd wouldn't be playing anything too complicated. Mostly Stereophonics, Feeder, Easyworld, Tom Waits, David Ford, Frank Turner etc. stuff. Nothing that would require anything special to be honest.

Cheers for the help again and sorry if it seems I'm ignoring your advice and just handing you a new set of questions lol

Good choices regarding the Dot. Love em and they are cheap. You can even play them acoustically when you don't feel like plugging in and since they are semi hollow they give out more sound than a regular solid body.

Vox vt15s are great for playing around with, cause they're modeling amps, and have loads of inbuilt effects you can play with. You may easily outgrow it at some point, cause its really a very nice toy, but its great for beginning guitarists cause you can hone your sound so to speak.

If you wanna go down the modeling amp road though, line 6 makes some very decent amps too for a similar price. Go to the guitar shop and plug a dot in through both and see what you like better.
I'm liking this Refo-fella. Wanna adopt?

very true Juan. it took me a while to get my head round the patterns but as u say, when its locked in its fairly easy and i agree, very showy. think ill go through the whole song to be honest. the only reason i said was i hadnt really touched my guitar in months, my tips had gone soft and it was the first thing i played since i moved and laid of the booze. well, laid off the booze all day.

I feel your pain mate. I haven't played properly through an amp in months and haven't practiced properly through an amp in at least a year (probably a lot more). I've got so sloppy it's embaressing. I never liked tapping at the best of times but my fingers are in agony after a bit of it now. I tried going through the Get The Funk Out solo the other day and they were in tatters and I couldn't nail it. I need to start taking it seriously again.

u and me both. get the funk out isnt hard as such but if u you are rusty its a pig. same as play with me and its a monster by extreme. not easy at all but when you have left the guitar for 2-3 months at least, it makes u think  that you were deluded to think you could play them. good tip guys, dont stop practicing lol.

Trying to learn Automatic Stop by The Strokes, the intro goes like this...

Just barre the top 3 strings with your index finger or might be easier to do it with your ring finger seein as it should already be on the 11th fret!

Google is your friend (for a not so legal version) ;]

Just add rapidshare into the search and that should get you a direct download from somewhere rather than a torrent.

I'm thinking about buying a mate's Epiphone off him, it's a hohner rockwood pro rp250, is that any good?

Is it an Epiphone or a Hohner, I'm confused?! Although I would say there can be so many variables that it's difficult to know by brand or even model sometimes - granted a Gibson Les Paul Standard is much more likely to be better than a Squier Strat, but it's not a certainty. My mate's got a Mexican-made Fender Strat that knocks spots off many American Standards to my ears (can't play it though as I'm a southpaw, curse my luck) and it only cost him Ł200. He's probably played hundreds of USA strats, other Mexicans, vintage, Japanese etc. etc. and never found one as good. Maybe they just had this one bloke who was shit-hot covering the day they put it together or something!

See if it sounds good to your ears, action is acceptable etc. Cosmetic marks shouldn't matter but I'd check the tuning. I've had several Epiphone guitars and man some have been a right bitch to tune, my Casino (first electric), while being a totally lovable creature despite me mistreating it, the G string has never stayed in fucking tune, I've had it set up by about eight different people/shops, done it myself, tried all kinds of strings and tuning tricks, but it's just something I've learnt to live with. Bending it back into tune is alright if you're playing lead but a bitch for chords and rhythm!

I can play, though pretty basic chords/riffs. I've got an average acoustic and a fake Gibson electric I got for free off a mate. When I get pissed off I can't play some stuff by Johnny Marr or John Mayer I usually revert to playing easy pop/r'n'b/soul songs to make me feel better about myself. :(

Learned how to correctly tune the guitar and played my first chord yesterday, furthest i've ever got despite having the guitar for a few months. Coursework/work has prevented me from having any spare time but now I've got far too much spare time, so gonna crack on with a few more chords later, not rushing it though, even a chord every few days would do me as long as I perfected them.

My current guitar collection consists of:

Fender Telecaster 72
Fender Strat 2001 Custom
Fender American Jazz Deluxe
Fender P-Bass Custom (with jazz body)
Epiphone Dot Studio (Tom Delonge edition)
Martin acoustic guitar
Onyx telecaster copy (my first ever guitar, now rigged with hotrails pickups.)
ESP Gothic Tom Araya Bass Guitar (Present from my granddad, who thought I would like it. It looks naff to play live but I love the guitar. Mostly because he bought it for me, but secondly it's my favourite guitar to record with. Twin EMG pick-ups for the win!)

I'm jealous!

For me, it came down to your's, and the one I got, the Taylor GS6 (or GSMS, Grand Symphony Maple Spruce).  Loved both, but to my ears, the Taylor was brighter, and the Gibson deeper, more bass y.  The Gibson front is a lot prettier, the Taylor has a gorgeous back.  I would have been happy with either, I love my Taylor, but there are days when I wished I'd bought the Gibson.

Interesting JP.  I got them to make the back and sides with birdseye maple, so I suppose it might have a slightly different sound to the standard Hummingbird.

What I did find interesting was I could get the Hummingbird custom made to my spec and buy it through a retailer in the states (Fullers), and it still worked out slightly cheaper than a standard Hummingbird would cost here in the UK.

Here's a pic of the back.

the trouble with the straight and the narrow is it's so thin I keep sliding off to the side

its a stunning guitar.

Thanks, I tried Martin's, Gibson's & all the premium priced luthier types, but liked this the best.  It was between the Gibson and this one at the end, a really tough decision!
