Last time I saw them was the Bitterzoet in Amsterdam. They had a drum kit but no drummer. I say they, it was Lee and someone on bass.

Gary Murphy of the Bandits on bass.. the "stripped back" tour!

Was a bit ramshackle in retrospect but their Liverpool show was amazing just for the vibe  :)

The way Lee Mavers plays guitar, he doesn't need a drummer!

And even when he doesn't have one, he does it himself!

Glad you like it!  :D

Which drummer? There were a few, there There She Goes drummer was Chris Sharrock, but the album era La's had Lee's brother Neil Mavers who was already in a band with Cammy (hence why they get so tight in 90/91!)

Think Lee dictated the drums quite a bit though personal style rolls through

this one, it's Neil right? Got his Keith Moon groove on, but obviously he's not going to go crazy with his brother keeping such a close eye on him.

That's him :) I love his style, really groovy and into it, but exact

Are the self titled album and BBC In Session album the best albums to get? I’ve looked on Apple Music and they have all sorts of compilations with demos, b-sides etc.

I downloaded the 2001 remaster of the self titled album as the 2008 remaster was full of mixes and was missing a couple of original songs from the 2001 album.

Am I doing it right? For a band that officially released one album my head has fell off trying to get the best of them.

^ bbc on a cassette tape, switch the Dolby off bass low, treble high. Or on Vinyl with a vacuum-tube amplifier, Linn turntable and a massive spliff. Enjoy
Only joking. I  don’t think you can go wrong with the album in its original form to be fair.
30 years old isn’t it - mad to think about it like that.

I don't think there's been a version of "just" the album since pre-2001 (any tracks appearing after Looking Glass were just extra tracks). I like the mix of the album proper on the 2008 remaster.

The BBC album is absolutely stonking though and you can do worse. In fact you can't do better!

So I made the Crescent album from Huyton in 98 into what I hope is a demonstrative demo version of the 2nd album

Good review.

It is a timeless album - I've notice over 30 years later there are loads of folk and bands on youtube covering songs like I can't sleep.

played it other day....its a quality lp...sounds better to me than when it come out...dunno why...maybe too much similar stuff at the time...obv There She Goes is the stone cold classic...but Timeless Melody is a so close to it...think I prefer it more.

Yeah Timeless Melody is exactly that. Great song. Mad how you never hear it played anywhere, There She Goes is the only song about 99% of people would know (rough estimate!).

Yeah, it’s a cracking album. Both got a good workout when I DJed a Champions League final party down here in Melbourne a few years back.

Macey’s In Search of The La’s is finally available on Kindle, etc. Great read.
