Give Blood
« on: March 23, 2004, 07:52:52 pm »
I don't know many people who give blood and it pisses me off.

We all expect to be able to receive it if (fowler forbid) it was nessessary, but so many people choose not to donate.

Some people have genuine reasons not to donate, but alot can't be bothered, and it annoys me.

Personnally i think it should be compulsary unless medically exempt.

Am currently medically exemp apparently, but the last time I had a blood test it looked gloopy and almost frothy. Don't think anyone would want any of that!

I got jaundice when a kid and I was told me this made me unsuitable, Any advice re: this would be welcome (probably from Pete) as I will attend if I qualify. Excellent thread by the way.

I think (but am not sure) that you can donate plasma if you had jaudice, but not blood.

I used too, but read once that they sold blood onto other area's and kept the money to cover admin costs.

Will NEVER give any again.

They give you a questionaire when you go tive blood and ask you the same questions about 3 times, one of them is about living or travelling outside Europe and Nort America. Think if you lived there  years ago you'd be ok

Surely the demand would be for the common blood types anyway.

I not only think blood donation could be compulsory but I’d say organ donations as well…..baring certain circumstances obviously, now that would make the shit hit the fan.

Don't agree with compulsory organ donation at all. It'll become one of those things that people never get around to changing because they have 'plenty of time'. Then they get run over and their corpse is dessimated against their will.

if people can use bits of me when I'm dead then fair enough. But I'm not religious or any other way inclined. I totally respect others who would have a problem though for their very obvious reasons.

I'm a bit strange with it really. There are times I think it's a good idea and times when I think 'I'm dead, leave me alone'. Think it stems from knowing someone who had organs removed without their or their families consent, and I think it was for research rather than saving lives. But all for blood donation!

I’m religious and they could still use me  ;D in fact I find the thought kinda comforting  :o

Not medical science but organ donation to save the living wouldn’t bother me, or doesn’t as I see things at the minute.

Bad experiences will shape your opinions that’s only natural, I worked for the NHS for 12 years – right from school so I guess I was fortunate to witness first hand all the good organ donation can and does do, the thought of saving someone’s life after mine is over (regardless of when that might be) appeals to me.

Appeals to me too but there's always a doubt. And it doesn't help hearing stories about how the NHS gave someone the lung of a 40-a-day smoker!

Being honest, I've never cosidered it.

Wouldn't be able to do it until mid August due to having az tattoo last year.

Also, apparently having  meningitis when I was 7 may mean I'm not allowed to do it?
