One of my favorite jazz albums is the "Dedicated to You, But You Weren't Listening" album, released by the slightly obscure Keith Tippett Group in 1971.

This is probably the most accessible tune on the album, but it has an incredible groove and, dare I say, "swag" about it!

When I was younger I heard all these great jazz names and so forth but it wasn't until I was at least 25 when I heard the name Sun Ra. Why is that? It's nuts. Armstrong, Davis*, Sun Ra. Sun Ra should have been on Parkinson. Why was he not?

edit* those were the first names I heard. Maybe Gillespie.

Black Unity Trio: Al Fatihah (1969)

Described as the first independently released free jazz album. Do this one day.

The British public in the 70s would have hated him on Parky. Mainstream tv viewers would have assumed he was mentally ill. You have to remember that not that long before that, audiences were really poor for the Motown Revue, all star shows at town halls etc, because British people would not pay to see black musicians. I was a Jazz promoter in the 80s and 90s, and we put him on in a small arts centre, we probably had 170 people in a 219 seater. The gig was great, but he was not very outgoing with anyone outside of his clique.
Wish I'd jumped on that Black Unity Trio: Al Fatihah album earlier, price has gone through the roof for a 2021 reissue.

I must admit, for many, many years I really hated jazz.

I heard the odd song that I liked before I turned 50 but most of it seemed a bit shite.

But now. Getting on as I am as I stride towards 100 arf

Well. Grooving a bit.

Listening to Petite Fluer now. Such niceness. Any other secret jazz lovers?

I have quite a few songs I'm into now.

Can't remember what I used to think and can't be arsed looking

But it kind of grows on you

I liked the 70s and 80s where pop built stories and characters (And 60s bands did that too to be fair - like the beatles)

But Jazz is kind of irressolute. It doesn't start or end or have a middle or a meaning apart from one you might think when you listen that time. Next time will be different

Perhaps I'm finally growing up our out or something :)

Sometimes the rhythms and the beats are more akin to punk or electro. Take Horse Lords for instance - this shifts ideas

Hey, we all change and grow as we get older.

I've been going through that '1,000 albums to listen to before you die' and it's great taking a time machine journey through the past and the people that started it, the stories and the history.

Surely everyone likes different stuff as they get older?

Hey, we all change and grow as we get older.

Do we fuck! ;D

I dunno, I guess we do a bit. Branches grow etc.

when I was say 20, jazz interested me but i didn't know where to start. No internet - just caught bits here, bits there, met people, got introduced to this/that yada. Beefheart was the game changer for me - that was my switch. I will always be wading behind but it's a great swim!

Recommend Nala Sinephro's Space 1.8 if you ever want to shut the curtains and chill out one evening. Close your eyes with something..

Not sure if it's counted as Jazz, but my favourite ever female singer is Julie London. Think she did some amazing Easy Listening/Swing/Jazz stuff.

Listened to Bitches Brew today… first time in a while and still it just hits the spot so perfectly .. to think people were saying Miles peak was behind him before this came out .. that the new young breed were showing him up as a has been and then … boom .. he goes and takes jazz in a whole new direction again 😁.  Continually reinventing ..

Can’t understand people saying they don’t like Jazz … it’s like saying you don’t like pop music … there’s so many genres and sub genres within that one small word …
