Apologies to Dave, and keep up the good work, mate, but whilst I'm probably in a great minority, I just can't get into progressive jazz.
Joey the Lips defined it as musical wanking.
No one can deny the virtuosity required to play it, nor deny the mundane and unsophisticated quality of most rock and roll that I love, but I love rock's structure, I love the beat, and I love the fucken lyrics.
I have to have lyrics.
You can see by my playlist that I really dig instrumentals and even long riffs by keyboards or guitarists, but I gotta have more meat to my songs than just the Picassoed tune by a soloist or three.
Take Tangerine f'rinstance. The most enchanting lyrics and sophisticated lilts to the tune, but all my ear heard that gifted man play seemed to be stylized scales.
Clearly my limitation.
But if you can ever find a version of The Loneliest Monk's arrangement of John Brown's Body, I'd be forever grateful
