My dad was a pretty good jazz pianist and I'll always associate this with him. I'd go to sleep listening to him playing this downstairs:

George Shearing, Lullaby of Birdland:

Milt Jackson, Take the A Train: Sublime vibraphone playing... smooth as silk:

I didn't post the Richie Valens video when I made the post about bass session legend Carol Kaye, but this was one of the first songs she is credited with before joining The Clique (sometimes known as The Wrecking Crew), which was a group of session musicians who played on everything from The Grass Roots to The Righteous Brothers to Glen Campbell (himself a former member). If you hear a hit song from 1962-1973, chances are, they're the back up band.

Another piece of history: the Amen Break, a 6-second drum clip that is the basis for over 2000 songs, from hip hop to jungle (most notably, "Straight Outta Compton" by N.W.A.) From the song, "Amen, Brother" by The Winstons. You'll hear it around the 1:27 mark.

I was listening to John Coltrane's Alabama on my phone yesterday. This is from his Birdland LP and is about the bombing in Birmingham in 1963 that killed four schoolgirls.

Listening to it reminded me of this piece....I've been told several times that Blues is dead and it's an old music...JB Lenoir disagrees. This is his response to the bombings that day.

And then in 1977 there was an LP release that blew everyone's mind....I know y'all know what one it was..... ;D

Yeah...that's right-Maze Featuring Frankie Beverly. This release was a mind blower in mine and all other lovers of black music circles back then. This took elements of disco, PIR/TSOP and the vocal styling of Gaye and made this one of that years finest releases..."Happy Feelins"....oh indeed. I know I'm probably the only one in here who bought this back then...but...if you've never grooved to these jamming....you got's to check them out.....great discog to pick from...these are the three standout tracks off that debut LP. These are also brilliant live...ya dig!!  Check out the live LP;Live in New Orleans for evidence of that.

A bit back Sam asked me for a recommendation re Monk...I always tell people to check out the LP this track is from.....this is one the most complex, beautiful pieces of jazz I've heard,Bop at it's best.

It was that difficult to play that the engineer,Orrin Keepnews had to piece it together from different takes....now bear in mind this was a combo that contained Roach, Rollins, Pettiford and Henry..all good and two great jazz musicians....Pettiford was close to a break down because of the complexity of what he was expected to play and he couldn't do so. See the below.

On October 15, Monk attempted to record the title track with the same band during a four-hour session. The complexity of the title track became a challenge for Monk's sidemen, who attempted twenty-five takes, and led to tension between him and Henry, who nearly broke down mentally, and Pettiford, who exchanged harsh words with Monk during the session. Monk tried to make it easier on Henry by not playing during his alto solo.During one of the takes, producer Orrin Keepnews and others in the control room could not hear Pettiford's playing and checked his bass microphone for a malfunction, but ultimately realized that he was pantomiming his playing. Without a completed single take, Keepnews ultimately pieced together the album version from multiple takes.

And one last one as no thread is complete without something from the truly wonderful Cole Porter, i love this version of one of my favourite Porter songs.

Been really getting into Cole Porter lately having discovered Ella Fitzgerald's great Cole Porter songbook album about two weeks ago, which then led me into Kiss Me Kate of all things.

When I was about 12 Danny gave me an LP he'd bought in Galveston on a stopover from a tanker he was working on...it was the Esther Phillips LP, From A Whisper To A Scream...he asked me to listen to it and come back and we'd chat about it.

I listened to it loads over a week or two. I went and he asked what I thought...I loved it and he asked me what stood out...one piece was the title track a song of great loss..a hauntingly beautiful piece-the other...was this, a version sung beautifully by Phillips...you can hear the pain in her plaintive....wailing as she sings about addiction, it was only years later I learned she was an addict,an addiction that would lead to an early death....that was my introduction to Gil...the most important artist in my record collection...this live version from 76 LP It's your World....Gil to me is what The Beatles are to most of you...simply the most important musician, poet..a great bluesologist...and for me, one of the most important songwriters, ever. Still missed.

Great song, and a mainstay of Groundpig sets, back in the day.

Used to love the annual Chrimbo Lindisfarne concerts-great laugh and great songs. The Empire used to be bouncing.

Apologies to Dave, and keep up the good work, mate, but whilst I'm probably in a great minority, I just can't get into progressive jazz.

Joey the Lips defined it as musical wanking.

No one can deny the virtuosity required to play it, nor deny the mundane and unsophisticated quality of most rock and roll that I love, but I love rock's structure, I love the beat, and I love the fucken lyrics.

I have to have lyrics.

You can see by my playlist that I really dig instrumentals and even long riffs by keyboards or guitarists, but I gotta have more meat to my songs than just the Picassoed tune by a soloist or three.

Take Tangerine f'rinstance.  The most enchanting lyrics and sophisticated lilts to the tune, but all my ear heard that gifted man play seemed to be stylized scales.

Clearly my limitation.

But if you can ever find a version of The Loneliest Monk's arrangement of John Brown's Body, I'd be forever grateful 8)

Just read that Johnny Murphy died February 23rd.

Jimmy Rabbitte: Who are you, then?

Joey: Are you the one startin' the band?

Jimmy Rabbitte: Yeah.

Joey: The name's Joseph Fagan. Joey 'The Lips' Fagan.

Jimmy Rabbitte: And I'm Jimmy 'The Bollocks' Rabbitte

Joey: I get mine from my horn playing. How'd you get yours?

Jimmy Rabbitte: Don't get snotty with me.

Joey: I get snotty with no man.

RIP lad.

Wondered what the hell you've been talking about till I did a quick search.  :) great movie, saw a lot lot of the original artists the movies based on live and loved them all.
Bit unfair to call progressive jazz musical wanking never a fan myself either, love the expression though  :) but think theres a lot you could describe as self indulgent, then again that can be said of a lot of music even rock. especially in the 60s+70s. you hear some of those progressive Jazz musicians playing more contemporary music and they blow you away so no bluff merchants and as you say very talented. just not for me.
Can never get my head around opera, how anyone can love it is beyond me, ive never listened to one piece of Opera that's made me want to carry on listening.
