thought i might give this thread a cheeky little bump for the day.

The greatest ever.

Good bump mate. Hard to disagree. Interesting how people seem to forget that. IMHO, whiskey-face's European Record is shocking, and seeing as that's where most teams and managers seem to be measured nowadays, he's been less than effective.

I can understand the length of the AF thread, his influence over the Premier League, the officials within the game, the press, have all been massive this is a true watershed moment in English football.  Moreover, many of us have been waiting 20 years for him to do one.......

That coupled with the apparent re-emergence of German domestic football, think he knew that he was light years away from a 3rd.

Can't argue with that but just a point. Mourinho will get 3 or 4 eventually. Will that make him better than Paisley, Ferguson, etc? Not in my book.

Why is this such an inevitability exactly?

He's just had 3 years with the most expensively assembled team in history, with an unparalleled control at that club. ... Didn't manage even manage a final.

Ancelotti has come closer than anyone, and no one acts like it's a formality he'll win it.

Probably posted in the other thread but, as this is a comparison thread, it's worth mentioning that Ferguson technically only joined us on our perch, as opposed to knocking us off it. It's not important, but well y'know...just sayin'.

Yep. He had what 20/21 attempts to win the big won - won it just twice. Bob won it 3 times in 7 attempts plus 1 UEFA cup with a hat trick of Euro titles from 76-78.
And that at a time when it was all knockout football in Europe - meaning no chance to lose a few games and get your eye in during the season. You had to be on the ball from the first match, against only domestic champions (not the 4th best team) which in my opinion made it harder to win back then.
And Im pretty he sure he still had to struggle with the limit on foreign players in Europe back then...something Fergie never mastered and only won after this rule was removed.
In England - 6 leagues in 9 years. If he had stayed on 27 years on average that would be 18 league titles to Paisley alone!!
Greatest - theres only one Bob Paisley!

Their IS only one Bob Paisley. It is truly criminal how underrated he is by most non-Liverpool supporters. Few could have done what he did. More than anyone else in our history it is Bob I hope Rodgers will seek to emulate most, with all due respect to Shankly.

I think age is a big part to do with it, Maureen has a good 10 years in him, and Pep could have another 20 him, and theres a good possibility that in that time they will win another European cup atleast. Ofcourse when it happens no one will remember the fact that Sir Bob only managed for 9 years and in an era where only league winners qualified for the European Cup won in something like 3/6 years compared to the likes of ferguson and his 2/20 but thats the wold we live in.

We still know who was the greatest though!

pep and mourinho are nailed on too get there though.

They might, they may not? Personally I would put money on them at least equaling it.
Had a discussion with a United fan about Bob doing something in 4 years, that Ferguson couldn't do in nearly 3 whole decades. It then got onto how they did the treble in 1999 and how we've never done a treble.
So put him right on Joe Fagan and his treble in 1984 and why even though he got the league cup in his and not the bigger FA Cup like theirs, Fagans was still a much bigger achievement because it was basically a quadrupole due to having to win either back to League or European Cup titles just to qualify for the European Cup in those days.
As United qualified for the 99 European Cup as league runners up, they wouldn't of even been in the European Cup, in order to do the treble, they'd of been in the UEFA Cup in Bob and Joe's day.
Another feather in Bob's cap, getting the team into the European Cup the season after so Joe could pick up where he left off and get a fantastic but amazing forgotten treble outside of the Liverpool family?

Could be a really shite argument, but shut him the fuck up! As does the Managers to win 3 European Cups - Bob Paisley, oh thats it!
