Like most, my faves would chop and change. There's some, though, that have been up there for years. Couldn't put all of them in any order, but right now I'd go something along the lines of:

Oh! Sweet Nuthin'   - Velvet Underground
Do You Realize   - Flaming Lips
Shine   - Years & Years
The End   - The Doors

Dogs    - Pink Floyd
We Are The People    - Empire of the Sun
America    - Simon & Garfunkel
Behind Blue Eyes    - The Who
O Children    - Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
Time After Time    - Cyndi Lauper
Fisherman's Blues    - Waterboys
Tears Dry On Their Own    – Amy Winehouse
Crash    - Primitives
Loaded    - Primal Scream
We Can Work It Out    – Beatles
Honey Bones    – Dope Lemon

The Gorillaz 'On Melancholy Hill' is a song that sorta passed me by when it was first out. I used to hear a bunch of Gorillaz stuff when they were in the charts (is that still a thing, kids?), but not so much that one.  Then last year I heard it randomly on the radio and thought 'Oh yeah, that's a classic' and started playing it a lot.

Anyway, some good choices Nobby, but none of them are Billy Ocean's When The Going Gets Tough (The Tough Get Going), so you're wrong.

Rebellion (Lies) - Arcade Fire

Arcade Fire - Wake Up

Arcade Fire are great but I really don't get Wake Up, it's easily the one I skip whenever I'm listening to them. Rebellion on the hand, wow, amazing song!

Haha, it’s perfectly fine, wasn’t offended!

Same. My wife has awful taste in music but she says the same about me. Sadly she’s turned the weans against us so I never get to listen to my music unless I’m out running so I’ve started going out for longer ones. :D

Like everyone else this would change every time you asked but some thoughts. Bit of a weird mix.

Primal Scream - Movin' On Up (this could have been any one of several songs off Screamadelica but had to pick one)
Pachanga Boys - Time
Fleetwood Mac - Go Your Own Way (I can already hear the Peter Green fans howling in outrage but this just makes me like it even more)
Massive Attack - Paradise Circus
Cinematic Orchestra - To Build A Home
Underworld - 8 Ball
Rolling Stones - Under My Thumb
The Cure - Just Like Heaven
Pulp - Feeling Called Love
Metro Area - Caught Up
Future Sound of London - Pulse State
Bob Dylan  - As I Went Out One Morning
Aphex twin - Ageispolis

Marvin Gaye - Inner City Blues
Curtis Mayfield - Little Child Runnin Wild

Blondie - Atomic
Robert Plant & ALison Krauss - Nothin'

Some of these I don't listen totthat much any more but you come across them in Itunes or whatever occasionally and instantly just want to give it another listen.

Good way of wasting a whole day's work.

So basically, I made a list of every song I've obscenely overplayed on Itunes, and ended up with a list of 400+ songs. Then I picked one song per artist and picked the ones that to this day I haven't managed to completely ruin for myself to make a final list of 80 songs. The top 20 could change any day, but I'm pretty happy with the final list... for now.

Just Like Heaven - The Cure
Silver Soul - Beach House
The Shrine / An Argument - Fleet Foxes
Two-Headed Boy Part 2 - Neutral Milk Hotel
Blue Crystal Fire - Robbie Basho
The State I Am In - Belle and Sebastian
Karma Police - Radiohead
Can't Hardly Wait - The Replacements
Rocks Off - The Rolling Stones
Lola - The Kinks
3rd Planet - Modest Mouse
When The Levee Breaks - Led Zeppelin
When You Sleep - My Bloody Valentine
Farewell Transmission - Songs: Ohia
Karmacoma - Massive Attack
(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay - Otis Redding
First Day of My Life - Bright Eyes
The Golden Age - Beck
Upon This Tidal Wave of Young Blood - Clap Your Hands Say Yeah
Viđrar Vel Til Loftárása - Sigur Rós

Rest of the list on spoilers.

The whole concept of this is ridiculous but in the true spirit of ridiculousness here's my ridiculous list ( a snapshot in time of some songs I love, in no particular order)...

Floyd - Comfortably Numb
Van Morrison - Ballerina
Can - Vitamin C
Rem - Find Me A River
Dinosaur - Kiss Me Again (fck Blue Monday, trust me this is the greatest 12 inch ever)
Shirley and Co - Shame Shame Shame
Irma Thomas - Don't Look Down
Eagles - Last Resort
Slickers - Johnny Too Bad
Clash - Safe European Home
Susan Cadogan - Hurts So Good
Tim Yuro - Whats a Matter Baby
Jimmy Cliff - Many Rivers To Cross
Sheila Anthony - Living In Love

U Roy - Natty Rebel
Handsome Family - Sunday Morning Coming Down
Talking Heads - Great Curve
Bon Iver - For Emma
Jam - Butterfly Collector
Soft Cell - Say Hello Wave Goodbye
Modern Lovers - She Cracked
Tami Lynn - I'm Gonna Run Away From You
Janet Kay - Silly Games

Bunnymen - No Hands
Midnight Choir - Last Chapter
Sweet Sensation - Sad Sweet Dreamer
IAMX - I Salute You Christopher

Arthur Conley - Sweet Soul Music

Ridiculous I've not picked any Lennon/Beatles, Bowie, Bob Marley, Dylan, Roxy/Ferry/Eno, Lou Reed/Velvets, Bolan/T.Rex, Otis, Al Green, Nick Drake etc but it'd be way too hard to choose

Like everyone else, I'm finding it impossible to pick 20 songs. I've also limited it to one per artist an still can't really do it, but here's mine...

1. Supper's ready - Genesis
2. Since I've been loving you - Led Zeppelin
3. Close to the edge - Yes
4. Who knows where the time goes - Fairport Convention
5. Comfortably numb - Pink Floyd
6. Sympathy for the devil - The Rolling Stones
7. Me and Bobby McGhee - Janis Joplin
8. Tangled up in blue - Bob Dylan
9. Anarchy in the UK - The Sex Pistols
10. Thunder Road - Bruce Springsteen
11. Strawberry Fields Forever - The Beatles
12. London Calling - The Clash
13. Cousin Jack - Show of Hands
14. Let there be rock - Drive By Truckers
15. Voodoo chile - Jimi Hendrix
16. The Killing Moon - Echo and the Bunnymen
17. Oliver's Army - Elvis Costello
18. Beeswing - Richard Thompson
19. Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath
20. Fortunate Son - Creedence Clearwater Revival

21. Hard loving man - Deep Purple
22. The green fields of France - The Men They Couldn't Hang
23. Ghost love score - Nightwish
24. The last English King - Big Big Train
25. Never buy the Sun - Billy Bragg

and I've had to leave out anything by Bowie, Radiohead, Mott the Hoople, The Cure, Neil Young, AC/DC, Emmylou Harris, Van Morrison, Half Man Half Biscuit, Queen, Alice Cooper, Iron Maiden, Talking Heads, The Doors, The Pogues, Siouxsie, The Jam, Wishbone Ash and Jackson Browne to name but a few

OH...MY..GOD

 ;D

This is actually turning out far far better than I'd thought. You fuckers are nowhere near as disciplined as all the arl farts I asked to do a similar thing yonks ago on the sadly now defunct Guestbook for THE BAND but boy is there more eclecticism [werd?] in one of your little fingers than in all their collective fingers and toes. I doubt if there was scarcely a solitary song I was unaware of when they all did it - presumably mainly all being Band and Dylan accolytes or similar. But these lists? Fuck me. An entirely different scenerio and Sam hasn't even posted his pantheon yet!!  The range so far is stunning. ;D

Anyroad, some absolutely stellar picks plus a multitude I've never heard of. You tube is going to have to get its arse in gear over the coming weeks for me to educate myself.

As for scoring to arrive at a top 100 faves??? I'm afraid you're all just going to wait till a year next Christmas by the looks of it. In the meantime one thing I do seem to have got right despite the charges of ridiculousness is that it is a great bit of fun for music lovers to rack the dark impenetrable regions of their trainspotting brains to unearth some of their longtime faves.

 :)

it was moderately hard to whittle it down to just 20, but essentially these are the certain songs that are scratched into my soul, as the Hold Steady put it. Putting the 20 in order from 1 to 20 however is the type of thing that will keep me up late into the night and there is a football match to watch later, so for now here they are in random order.

White man in Hammersmith Palais - the Clash
Thick as thieves - the Jam
Rain - the Beatles
Eight miles high - the Byrds
Tin Soldier - Small Faces
Tracks of my tears - Smokey Robinson
I say a little prayer - Aretha Franklin
Across 110th Street - Bobby Womack
$1000 wedding - Gram Parsons
Pleasant Valley Sunday - the Monkees
Who knows where the time goes - Fairport Convention
I don't want to hear it anymore - Dusty Springfield
Birds - Neil Young
Thunder Road - Bruce Springsteen
Morning Morgantown - Joni Mitchell
Wild is the wind - David Bowie
Duchess - Scott Walker
Ruby's arms - Tom Waits
So Central rain - REM
Dive for your memory - the Go-Betweens

Anyway, some good choices Nobby, but none of them are Billy Ocean's When The Going Gets Tough (The Tough Get Going), so you're wrong.
I respect this and agree with it whole heartedly. He absolutely did have something to tell us.

This thread has reaffirmed to me just how good Sorrow by Bowie is. It's actually a cover of The 1969 McCoys' track, but Bowie did it better. The 12 string, the cello, the fucking two-tone wood sounder, genius arrangement.

Also I forgot to include Atomic by Blondie on my list, poor omission on my behalf.

I have a massive soft spot for REM's Man on the Moon.
“Seeing these smiling faces is the greatest pleasure. They have been magnificent all season. They have been our 12th man. I have always said our fans are the best in England. Now I know they are the best in Europe too.” Rafa Benitez

Brilliant album, loved it when it came out, really good listen all the way through and as you say some really great standalone tracks on it as well
