Yeah.
Villeneuve will take a break to do something else (actually good for the movie to have everyone age a bit), but it's getting done.
Also I think Part 2 will make a shitload of money, so Messiah is really a done deal.

Supposedly Villeneuve is doing Rendezvous with Rama which, judging by how well he uses scale in Dune is gonna look fucking amazing.

Was a really good interview on Kermode and Mayos Take with Denis Villeneuve and Hans Zimmer. Hans said he's already sent him 10 minutes of music for Dune Messiah.

Yeah, that smells like a classic in the making.
Villeneuve is at the peak of his powers, after Dune he'll get all the freedom and budget he needs.
Could be a properly majestic and one of a kind movie.

Apart from The Electric State, this is the sci-fi movie I'm looking forward to the most.

I've loved all his movies, but Sicario for me is one of his best, and he just gets better and better.

I have waited my whole life to do a film that would do the books justice.

Spoiler

Just hope they don't try and make it some fucking stupid romantic bullshit knobhead action film about bollocks and shite.

If they make it along the lines of 2001 with all the wonder and mystery and awe that the books created then it'll be awesome - I want to finish the first film thinking?

"What the fuck. What was that? WHO were they" - just where the first book left us.

It was that awe and majesty and lack of any knowledge that made the book one of the best written. The later ones went on to explain things too much I think.

For fans of Villeneuve, I really recommend three of his earlier films.

August 32nd On Earth - You see some of his technical flourishes in his feature debut, the story is a bit thin but it's still an impressive debut.

Polytechnique - About the 1989 Montreal massacre, its strikes the same somber mood and lack of moralising as Gus Van Sant's Elephant.  Again you can see budgetary restraints but it still has visual flourishes that show his talent.  A disturbing, emotional film about toxic masculinity and misogyny.

Incendies - I still consider this his best film and it's still an extremely relevant piece of storytelling. It shows how the trauma of civil war can transcend generations.

Villeneuve almost seemed like a fully formed filmmaker from the off, it's really no surprise that he's turned into one of the most exciting directors plying his trade.  The first two were on Mubi a while back, they change their catalogue regularly so no idea if that's still the case.

My wife’s review of Dune this morning.

“I watched a three hour film about worm shit”

Best review yet. I fell asleep watching it. I'm not sure if that's narcolepsy, sleep deprivation, or a convoluted script that has no emotional depth in its characterisation (imo). Great cinematography and sounds though. That weird sand walk/dance they do is also very comical. I might try that the next time it snows.

Watched Killers of the Flower Moon and The Creator over the weekend.

KOTFM looked great but I didn’t find it as engaging/engrossing as I thought I might. Was a bit bored at times.

Loved The Creator. Again thought it looked great and while it was fairly easy to guess the main story points it was still a good story and kept you interested throughout

Same here with Killers of the Flower Moon, I had been eagerly waiting for it on Apple but I was wondering when it was going to get good. About halfway in it did but I have to say that I don't see what all the fuss was about in fairness. Left me feeling very meh.

he's effectively a brand name, he employs/exploits a lot of junior composers to work for him and then it goes up with his name (and they usually get an 'additional composing by' credit)

American Fiction winning best adapted screenplay is a shocker of a decision, though its no surprise

the other four films all significantly better Barbie, Oppenheimer, Poor Things, The Zone of Interest

on the other hand, great to see Anatomy of a Fall pick up original screenplay.

and Godzilla Minus One for visual effects

Personally I found Oppenheimer very boring glad it didn't do as well as  predicted by some saying it would beat the Oscars tally won by Return the King and Titanic for most Oscars

I liked the earlier start didnt it used to start around 1am UK time and go on until at least 5am

Stunned Emma stone won.

Gladstone picked up all the important gongs.

Stunned Emma stone won.

Gladstone picked up all the important gongs.

I think Gladstone's momentum increasingly faded once Poor Things was released. Stone won at the BAFTAs snd Golden Globes for instance for her brilliant performance so it's not a massive shock as the make-up of the Academy is more international now. Given how Randolph swept everywhere, it would have been interesting to see if Gladstone would have won had she been put in Supporting Actress where it was felt earlier in the season she was a lock.

a very very rare year where the big prizes were won by really good films and actors (not seen Holdovers yet, but agree above that Lily Gladstone could have been a deserved winner of best supporting). happens so much less frequently than imagined, an best picture in particularly has been on an almost uninterrupted bad run. first ever british win for best international film too
