Fucking fantastic news, and completely out of the blue I have to say. For one thing, I thought any deal would still be a long drawn out process over the next couple of weeks, perhaps with City trying to bust a deal. I assume the Soton came to their senses a few weeks ago and decided that they badly needed to money early on to be able to spend it before they get into trouble.

For the record, I hope they now support Pelegrino with some decent signings and they can steer clear of the drop zone, don't want to see an ex-red under pressure.

Welcome Virgil. Not a rescue operation by any means and I'm prepared for the fact it may be a month before we see him playing regularly for us (and hopefully bossing it).

Please can everyone chill out on the price. Mustafi, Rudiger and Lindelof all cost around £35 million and were less in demand than Van Dijk was. And City spend almost £50 million on their back four signings these days. Sakho (with no future after a public fallout) went for almost £30 million, and Jonny Evans was being discussed at £35 million this summer.

We've paid a premium to get him ahead of Chelsea and City, and part of us beating them to him was the announcement we made it the summer. It meant it was delayed a few months, and cost us almost £10 million extra, but this is a huge success for Klopp - he's being supported financially and by the backroom staff. I'm glad we've got him his man, and don't care that we've had to spend a lot of money (that we've earned) to do it.

I don't think you've got the context of my post. Its naive to think he'll do a Gerrard and stay for ever. As much as I'd love him to. We've seen big players leave before and we'll see it again, but my point was that the fact we've signed VVD signals our intentions to other players that we're not just spending money - every club spends money, but we're willing to go all out and get our top targets.

Our center back pairing from yesterday's game cost a total of £4m quid. Our top scorer only cost £35m.

Nah this is bullshit. Why wait six months to get the centre back our manager really wanted and who fits our system perfectly when we could have just signed Jonny Evans or Harry Maguire in the summer or kept Sakho.

Ultimately the price is irrelevant though - the boss got his target - that is all that matters

Glad we pushed this through as early as possible.

For someone his age, 26, he hasn't played a lot of games for club and country around, 275 senior appearances total, which is average. It's nothing compared to players like Neymar, Coutinho or Insigne. A lot of those game relatively straightforward SPL and Erdevise games. He'll play at the top level well into his 30's for us. And we'll have him for the this seasons champions league run in a position we are desperate for reinforcements. All told the fee is no big deal at all.

I think its a good thing when we add quality players to the first team. I think the price tag is fine, but the lad ahs that around his shoulders so I hope he gets a decent start otherwise the press (and some of our phans) will be all over him.

I was only saying to a Manc old schoolmate of mine a couple of weeks ago that Van Dijk just didn't look like he wanted to play for Southampton anymore when we beat them at Anfield.
