Anyone got it?

Particularly looking for anyone who has used a peak flow meter, the rocket like thing to test your... erm, puff and the chart thing you have to do. Anyone know what's supposed to be the norm? It goes from 60 to 880.

340 is exactly what mine went down to last night, from a norm of between 500/600.

That'll be the downside of smokey pubs for you.

Its ok my asthma doesnt attack like some peoples where they literally cannot breathe and panic making it worse etc, it just feels like Vanessa Feltz is sitting on me chest. (What a dream scenario eh). Back to the doc's in a week.

I got sports asthma so I have a puff before any matches. My peak flow was 650 I think.

When I have an attack I cant breath my lips start to turn blue and that when that happens I try and not to panic but I all ways do that makes me worse. It is really scarey tho for me.

I think I was off scholl for 8 weeks at Christmas because it was that bad!

I've had it since I was a kid, but much better these days.

Used to go to hospital for a nebuliser when I had bad attacks, but once in 1990 I had such a serious attack I nearly died - but didn't know at the time that you could die from a asthma attack. Had I known, I'd have panicked that bit more. I was fighting to get the tiniest, tiniest breath.

I was rushed to hospital (800 yards away, luckily) by my flatmates, injected with steroids, put on an intravenous drip and given an oxygen mask. Fucking scary stuff, but recovered my breathing fairly quickly after that. The next morning a nurse sat me down and explained the severity, and how you can die from attacks.

I was put onto a steroid inhaler after that, and since then only had a couple of minor attacks. I take the illness a lot more seriously these days.

I used to do the same. My peak flow was 650/700. I once got sent off (second booking) for taking a puff of my inhaler on the pitch without the ref's permission!  :butt

I used to have major attacks all the time til I was about 15.

Was able to participate in most sports except long distance running, I had a lovely P.E teacher who used to literally force me to do cross country. It wasn't until I went blue, told her to fuck off and spewed on her shoes, followed by a Dr's note the next day explaining that she was in danger of being on a manslaughter charge if she carried on that she FINALLY got the message.

Still can't stand the old cow now. How she got a headteacher's job at another local school I'll never know.

I have been a twat over the years though, smoking whilst drunk etc, but had a real bad attack the other day when I went out for a bike ride so I'm gonna have to get myself sorted out. Back on the Becotide and Salbutamol for now.

I've had it since I was a little'un. Over the past few years its become a lot more stable and I only really get bad when I've got a cold or I do a load of running.

Tip: for those of you who don't know if you take your 'preventer' (usually ventolin etc) before sport it opens up your air ways. I swear by it!

Asthma seems to be put in the same box as epilepsy as far as the layman is concerned, a lack of understanding about a condition that many people don't know much about. Having either of these maladies you would not wish them on anybody else, but thoughts from my family members and patients I work with can be summed up with 'Try five minutes in my shoes.'
The only good is knowledge and the only evil is ignorance.

Has anyone that suffers from Asthma tried any form of alternative medicine??

reason im asking is my missus suffers from asthma, and is constantly puffing away on her inhaler,  she is pretty closed minded when it comes to arguing with doctors and wont explore anything else.

really am curios to see if there is an alternative.

It wasn't until I gave up smoking that I got exercise induced athsma... but I don't recommend tobacco as an alternative medicine.

The odd thing my athsma doesn't bother me when I cycle only when I laugh. (so haven't needed my ventolin recently)

I don't use a peak flow meter now but I did at first and my reading was no higher than 150. :-X

When I was younger I tried a type of herb which you put under your bed.  It worked a treat, I went from needing my inhaler 3 / 4 times a day to not needing it at all for well over a month.  The effect gradually started waring off after about 6 months though but thankfully my asthma is very mild these days.

Try the purple inhaler called seritide.  Me mam uses it, and she is absolutely fine now. :wave

I'd definitely agree with that.  My asthma was pretty bad two years ago, sleepless nights, unable to exercise, coughing fits etc. I went in to see the asthma nurse at my GPs and she recommended Seretide and it's totally transformed my life. Peak flow is now constantly above the norm for my age/height, I'm playing footy twice a week and I'm back on the bike and putting in 50 miles plus without problem.

Obviously different medicines work differently for different people but if the old Salbutomol/Steroid routine isn't working for you then do go to your GP and ask about changing, you might never look back.

I'd endorse seretide as well - seems to work superbly for everyone I know who has switched.

As foir alternatives/complimentary treatments it's worth looking into The Buteyko Breathing Method. I was told about at least ten years ago by my Russian boss who lived in the same Moscow apartment block as the Professor who devised it and was treated for his asthma by him (Buteyko was friend of the family). It's recently gained a lot of publicity in the west and has been the focus of a few recent studies.
